Ten brands in the car park facing Terminal 1
The airport is at Marignane, north-west of the city. Its rental desks are outside, not in the arrivals hall.
The airport’s own page puts the rental desks at car-park level in front of Terminal 1 and names ten brands: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, National, OK Mobility and Sixt.
Discover Cars says the airport desks are “primarily located inside the main terminal building”; the airport says car-park level in front of Terminal 1, and we’d go with the airport — follow the signs, not a comparison site’s description.
Sixt’s page gives Mon–Thu and Sun 7:30–11:30 PM; Fri–Sat and holidays 7:30–midnight. Hertz’s gives Mon–Fri 7:30–midnight; Sat 8–midnight; Sun 8:30–midnight, and its number is +33 825 091 313.
We didn’t read the other eight brands’ airport hours. After closing, the airport says to contact the reservation centre.
The tourism office: “No direct connection between Marseille Provence Airport and the Cruise Terminals”.
That line is the whole problem in one sentence — and it’s why this page prices the car against the rides, not on its own.
One rental day from MRS against the A1, a taxi and a booked car
Change the headcount and the base rate. The comparison down the right side updates with every tap.
The rental, line by line
Euro arithmetic for one day and two people; your quote has the real total. We assume €35 a day, a placeholder, not a price. Fuel covers the 11.5-mile run to MPCT, but only once you enter what the pump charges a litre: no official October 2026 price was readable. The airport box starts at 0% because none of the five brands we read prints an airport surcharge, and VAT is assumed to be inside a French quote. A car-seat price wasn’t published, so the seat stepper adds nothing, and tolls aren’t counted. The rides are MSC’s taxi estimate, the A1 fare and a Viator listing converted from dollars. Dollar conversions on this page use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, about $1.12 to the euro.
At the defaults, two people come to €35 (about US$40) for the car, against €30 (about US$35) on the A1 and about €50 by taxi — our arithmetic, before fuel.
The rental line hides a cost the calculator can’t show. There’s nowhere at Gate 4 to give the car back.
Drop it at St-Charles and you’re on the metro and the free port shuttle anyway, about 4.9 road miles from MPCT.
Sixt Arenc is closer, 3.6 miles out — but only on a weekday.
For the straight airport-to-ship run, the car costs about what the bus does for two, and adds a drop-off the bus doesn’t have — keep it for trips that go somewhere first.
Put four people in and the taxi undercuts the bus, with no drop-off to arrange. The fare isn’t fixed: the should-you-rent page has the metered tariff and the A1 by headcount.
How far MRS is from the ship, depending on who you ask
Three sources, three numbers. The spread is small, but it’s worth knowing which one you’re reading.
MSC calls the airport about 20 km (12 miles) away, 20 to 50 minutes by car; cruisemapper, a ship-tracking site, says about 27 km; our routing to MPCT is 18.6 km.
J4 is further — about 14.7 road miles (23.7 km) and 24 minutes by our routing, in the city centre rather than on the port’s northern edge.
None of those figures includes a Marseille rush hour.
MSC’s 20-to-50-minute range is the honest one for planning — plan on the top end.
By public transport it’s another story; MSC’s two-hour warning is on the should-you-rent page.
Booking an automatic at Marseille airport
Most of what we read didn’t say which gearbox you’d get. Find out before you land.
Sixt’s airport page offers manual, automatic and electric cars; no brand page we read gives an automatic surcharge or says how many automatics a desk holds.
If you haven’t driven a manual in years, the A55 into Marseille isn’t the place to relearn.
Filter for automatic when you search. Then read the car class on the voucher — “or similar” can mean a different car, not a different gearbox.
Discover Cars’ Marseille Airport page said “from $26” on Oct 3, 2026, the lowest result $26.12 a day for a Peugeot 108 or similar, with OK Mobility, Goldcar, Alamo, Keddy and Europcar among the suppliers; a search snippet the same day said “from $23”. Those dollar figures are Discover Cars’ own, for unstated sample dates, and we couldn’t see the gearbox on the cheapest result.
Landing at MRS after dark
The airport’s late hours are its one real advantage over the city desks.
Hertz is open until midnight every night of the week, and Sixt until 11:30 PM, or midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays.
The A1 bus keeps going later still — its last departure from the airport is 1:50 AM on the 2026 timetable.
So an 11 PM landing still has a bus, two desks and a taxi rank that runs round the clock.
Arriving the night before sailing is the sane version of all this. Collect nothing, ride to a hotel, decide on a car in daylight.
Our Marseille hotel guide covers where to sleep; the hub’s hours checker covers the city desks the next morning.
Vitrolles-Aéroport, the station by the airport
There’s a railway station by the airport too. It belongs on the list, with a caveat.
Vitrolles-Aéroport TER station, a shuttle ride from the terminal, sees up to 73 trains a day; its fare to St-Charles wasn’t on the airport’s page.
The airport’s page says a LeBus13 shuttle links the station to the bus station, every day of the year, in about 5 minutes.
We didn’t confirm which of those trains stop at St-Charles, or what they cost, so check the TER timetable before you rely on one.
Even then, it replaces the bus, not the metro and shuttle legs after it.
Collect at MRS only if the car keeps going
An airport car makes sense when it’s headed somewhere other than the ship — a few days in Provence first, or a family of five with bags.
Two people going straight aboard should take the bus or a taxi — not a car they’ll hand back an hour later.
If you rent, search MRS with the drop-off at the desk you’ll actually reach. The Barcelona version of this question is on our Barcelona rental page.
Euro figures lead on this page; dollars are at the ECB rate of Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 to the euro, and your card will differ a little.

Marseille airport and the run to the ship: questions
Where are the car rental desks at Marseille airport?
At car-park level in front of Terminal 1, per the airport. It lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, National, OK Mobility and Sixt. Discover Cars describes them as inside the main terminal; we’d follow the airport.
How far is Marseille airport from the cruise terminal?
About 11.5 road miles (18.6 km) and 17 minutes to MPCT on an empty road, by our OpenStreetMap routing. MSC says about 20 km and 20 to 50 minutes by car; J4 is about 14.7 miles away.
How much is a taxi from Marseille airport to the cruise port?
MSC says to expect around €50. We found no fixed airport-to-port fare: the metered tariff the airport links (dated 2022) has a €2.10 pick-up and €0.99 to €2.56 a kilometre.
Is there a bus from Marseille airport to the cruise port?
Not directly. The A1 bus goes to St-Charles station for €15, then it’s metro line 2 to Joliette and the 35T or the free port shuttle to Gate 4 on ship days. MSC warns the trip can take around two hours.
What time do rental desks close at Marseille airport?
Hertz closes at midnight every day; Sixt at 11:30 PM Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. Sixt has a key box for later returns, and Hertz takes them by prior arrangement.
Can you rent an automatic car at Marseille airport?
Sixt’s airport page offers manual, automatic and electric cars. No brand page we read prints an automatic surcharge or how many it keeps, so filter for automatic and check the voucher.
