Nice and Avignon to the Marseille terminals, in miles and minutes
A flight into Nice or a TGV to Avignon leaves you one to two hours’ drive from the ship. The car closes the gap, at a price.

OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), free-flow, no traffic and no stops; day trips start at MPCT. Our routing, Oct 3, 2026 — Our routing
Two hours from Nice is the floor, not the plan — the times above assume nobody else is on the road.
The airport’s bus page lists a Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Fréjus route, with no fares shown. We didn’t read TGV or TER fares or times from Nice or Avignon — the train side of this comparison is yours to fill in.
VINCI’s 2026 list puts the A8 from Nice to Aix at €21.20 for a car; the Provence page has what the list leaves out.
Landing in Nice because the flight was cheaper? Add the two-hour drive and a one-way fee before you call it a saving.
What the brands say about a one-way into Marseille
A one-way rental is the whole point of this page, and it’s the number nobody publishes.
Hertz says one-way rentals “impliquent généralement des frais supplémentaires, dont le montant varie selon le lieu de restitution”: usually an extra fee that depends on where you drop the car.
Enterprise says its one-way surcharge varies by car category, location and date. Sixt says one-way rentals are available. Europcar offers pickup at St-Charles with return to the airport.
No brand page we read prints a Nice-to-Marseille or Avignon-to-Marseille one-way amount.
So the calculator leaves the drop charge at €0. Type in what your quote shows, not a guess.
With the fuel box blank too, the rental side starts at €35 (about US$40) for one day, our assumption — a number that means little until the one-way fee is in it.
The rental, line by line
One day, two people, in euros; the quote you get is the real total. The €35 a day is our placeholder. Fuel covers 117.2 miles from Nice airport to MPCT once you key in a pump price per litre, which we couldn’t read officially for October 2026. The drop charge starts at €0 because no brand printed one for this route, and the airport box at 0% because we read no Nice desk pages. We treat VAT as included, our assumption; seats add nothing without a published price, and A8 tolls are left out. Dollar figures here use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12 to the euro.
Starting in Avignon, the same sum carries about 53 miles of fuel instead of 117. Our one-way rental guide covers how drop fees tend to show up on a quote.
Marseille’s ZFE and the Crit’Air sticker, for a rental driver
Per the Métropole’s FAQ, every car driving or parking inside Marseille’s ring boulevards needs a Crit’Air sticker, around the clock. A rental driver has two extra things to check.
Marseille’s low-emission zone (ZFE-m) covers about 19.5 km² inside the ring of boulevards (Littoral, Euroméditerranée, Lesseps, Plombières, Jarret, Rabatau and Prado), every day, around the clock.
Crit’Air 4, 5 and unclassified cars are barred around the clock. The ban on Crit’Air 3 planned for September 2024 was put off indefinitely, and those cars still drive in, per a motoring-club report updated in January 2025 and a car-retail guide updated in January 2026.
The Métropole’s own FAQ says the sticker is “obligatoire pour circuler et stationner à l’intérieur du périmètre”, to drive and to park inside it.
That FAQ dates from 2022, and the Métropole’s current page didn’t load for us, so the class rules above rest on the two secondary reports.
The same 2026 guide says the A55 viaduct and the city-centre tunnels stay open to every vehicle. Whether MPCT or J4 sits inside the perimeter, no page we read says; the “Littoral” boundary runs along the port. Plan as if you’ll cross it.
Service-Public: the Crit’Air sticker is compulsory to drive in a ZFE-m, foreign-registered cars order it online only, it costs €3.85 (about US$4) including postage within France, and the standard fine is €68 (about US$75), up to €450 (about US$505).
A French-registered rental should already carry its own sticker, but no rental-brand page we read confirms it; look at the windscreen before you leave the desk — the easiest check you’ll make all trip.
How a Marseille rental company passes a ZFE fine on to you, we couldn’t find on any brand page we read — ask at the desk, not after the letter arrives.
LCP, the National Assembly’s channel, reported on May 21, 2026 that the Conseil constitutionnel struck down the clause abolishing ZFEs, so the zones stay; we didn’t read the decision itself.
Don’t accept a car without a sticker. Don’t drive an older car of your own into the centre until you’ve checked its class.
Starting at Avignon TGV instead
Coming south by TGV, Avignon is the stop about an hour’s drive from Gate 4.
Avignon’s TGV station is about 53.1 road miles (85.5 km) from MPCT, roughly 60 minutes free-flow by our routing.
We read no Avignon rental desk pages. Check hours on the brand’s own site before you book a Sunday pickup.
A private car between Marseille airport and Avignon was listed at $229 a group, about €204 at the ECB rate — a Viator listing, and it runs to the airport rather than the port.
If Avignon is also on your sightseeing list, see it as a day out from Marseille instead — the Provence page prices it.
Where to hand a one-way car back in Marseille
Nobody takes cars back at the port. Choose the return desk by the day of the week you’ll arrive.
Sixt Arenc is the nearest return to MPCT at 3.6 road miles — but its page lists Monday to Friday only.
On a weekend, St-Charles is the drop. Sixt, Avis and Europcar there take cars back after hours; Enterprise doesn’t.
From the station, the metro to Joliette and the free port shuttle carry you the rest of the way on a ship day.
The airport is the third choice, about 11.5 miles from MPCT, and its desks run to about midnight.
Set the drop-off desk in the search before you compare prices — the hub’s desk cards have every address.
Price the one-way with the Marseille desk already in it
Search with the pick-up in Nice or Avignon and the drop-off at the Marseille desk you chose above.
Read the total, not the daily rate. The one-way fee only appears there.
Prices here are in euros first; the dollar equivalents use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, about $1.12 to the euro, and your card’s rate will differ.
- Pick-up: Nice or Avignon
- Drop-off: a Marseille desk
- One-way fee in the total shown
- Free cancellation until 48 hrs out
Driving into Marseille for a cruise: questions
How long is the drive from Nice airport to Marseille cruise port?
About 2 hours 9 minutes for 117.2 miles (188.6 km) to MPCT, by our free-flow OpenStreetMap routing, and about 2 hours 15 to J4. Traffic on the A8 adds to that, and there are tolls we couldn’t price.
Do I need a Crit’Air sticker in a rental car in Marseille?
The sticker is compulsory to drive in a low-emission zone, and Marseille’s covers the centre inside its ring boulevards around the clock. A French-registered rental should already carry one, but no rental page we read confirms it, so check the windscreen before you leave the desk.
How much is the fine for no Crit’Air sticker?
Service-Public gives a standard fine of €68, up to €450. A foreign-registered car can order the sticker online for €3.85 including postage within France.
Is there a one-way fee from Nice to Marseille?
Hertz says one-way rentals usually carry an extra fee that depends on where you return the car, and Enterprise says its surcharge varies by category, location and date. No brand page we read printed an amount for this route.
Is Marseille’s low-emission zone still in force?
Yes, as far as we can tell. LCP reported that the Conseil constitutionnel struck down the clause that would have abolished ZFEs on May 21, 2026, and a Métropole page updated in July 2026 still shows the zone. Crit’Air 4, 5 and unclassified cars are barred; Crit’Air 3 cars still drive in.
Where can I return a rental car in Marseille on a Sunday?
At St-Charles station: Sixt, Avis and Enterprise all open on Sundays, and Sixt, Avis and Europcar take cars back after hours. Sixt Arenc, the closest desk to MPCT, lists weekday hours only.
