Splurge Hotels · Rotterdam

Seven hotels with a story, before the ship

Rotterdam’s grander nights come with a story, not a resort pool. Two of these seven are Holland America’s own history: its old head office and its old flagship. Michelin’s Rotterdam listing showed no Key beside any of the seven when we read it — they stand on what they offer, not on a badge. Each card says what the hotel adds and what it leaves you to arrange.

What kind of splurge is it?

Seven places made this list. Six of them also rank in our twenty; Hotel Des Indes, in The Hague, gets a page of its own. Pick the kind of night below and the matching hotel lights up.

For ratings we print what exists: whether Michelin’s selection lists the hotel, from Michelin’s own pages, and any star count a brand or the tourist board prints. “Not on Michelin’s listing we read” means exactly that, not lesser.

Point at a hotel’s name and its column lights up — green means it’s there, gold that it costs extra or comes with a catch, grey that nobody says.

Splurge the night, then mind the morning

On the Wilhelminapier the morning is easy. By our routing nhow is about two minutes on foot from the terminal and Hotel New York about 5 minutes; Pincoffs is about 0.6 miles, and Haven about 0.9, over the Erasmus Bridge.

The ss Rotterdam is the one where the car decides it. The port’s cruise lot is in front of the ship at €19 per 24 hours, and the port’s shuttle runs to the terminal; on foot it’s about 1.1 miles over the Rijnhaven bridge.

Des Indes is a different trip. It’s about 17.4 road miles from the ship by our routing, so book the taxi to Rotterdam the night before.

The tourist tax comes on top: 6.5% of the overnight price in Rotterdam in 2026, per the city, which doesn’t say whether VAT is in that price. On a €300 (about US$335) night that’s about €19.50 (about US$20), our arithmetic. The Hague sets its own, which we didn’t research.

FAQ

Splurge hotels FAQ

Are there Michelin Key hotels in Rotterdam?

Not among our picks, on the listing we read. Michelin's Rotterdam-area hotel listing, read October 4, 2026, showed a Key beside two hotels in The Hague and none beside Hotel New York, nhow, Pincoffs or Des Indes. Michelin's own hotel pages didn't render Key wording for us, so check the guide before you book on that basis.

What's the most historic hotel for a Rotterdam cruise?

Two tell the Holland America story. Hotel New York was the line's head office, about 0.22 miles on foot from the terminal by our routing, and the ss Rotterdam was its flagship, now moored in Katendrecht beside the port's cruise car park.

Do Rotterdam's luxury hotels run transfers to the cruise terminal?

None of the seven runs its own. The port's free shuttle leaves from the car park at the ss Rotterdam for boarding passengers, and from Hotel New York or nhow the terminal is a short walk.

What happened to the Mainport Hotel in Rotterdam?

It reopened in September 2025 as Haven Hotel Rotterdam, Curio Collection by Hilton, after a renovation. Booking.com still lists it under the Mainport name.

Can I park at a Rotterdam luxury hotel while I cruise?

At the ss Rotterdam, yes — the port's own lot is in front of it, €19 per 24 hours, with a shuttle to the terminal. The city hotels print day rates: Haven €37.00, Hilton €35.00 and nhow's Q-Parks €40.00, and Hotel New York has no parking of its own.
