Saturday or Sunday: the day your ship comes back decides the desk
Two Holland America ships homeport here, and they don’t come back on the same day of the week.
The port’s call list shows Holland America ships in from 7 AM to 3 PM every week or two: Rotterdam on Sunday Sep 27 and Sunday Oct 4, Nieuw Statendam on Saturday Oct 3, Oct 17, Oct 31, Nov 7, Nov 21 and Dec 5, 2026.
The list carries no turnaround flag; we read those as turnaround days from Holland America’s own releases, so treat the dates as our reading — not the line’s promise.
The pattern matters more than any single date — on every date we read, each ship kept to its own weekday.
Saturday is workable — every town desk opens that morning and closes at 1 PM.
Sunday is not. Two town desks, three hours, and nothing after lunch.
Look up your own ship’s return day on the port’s call list before you book a car — or ask us. Holland America’s Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam pages cover the ships themselves.
Who rents you a car in Rotterdam on a Sunday morning
Pick a day and a time; each desk is read in Dutch time from its company’s published hours.
| Desk | Saturday (24 h clock) | Sunday | After-hours return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avis, Rotterdam Centraal Station | 8–13 | 9–12 | Key box on the building |
| Hertz, Rotterdam Central Railway Station | 9–13 | 10–12 | Not stated |
| Sixt, Rotterdam City (Hilton Hotel) | 9–13 | Not listed | Opening hours only |
| Sixt, Rotterdam Hofplein | 9–13 | Not listed | Parking Hofplein, level 3B |
| Avis, Rotterdam The Hague Airport | 8.5–23 | 8.5–23 | Key drop, departure hall |
| Sixt, Rotterdam The Hague Airport | 9–17 | 9–17 | 24-hour returns |
From each company’s branch page, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026
The checker opens at 11:30 on a Sunday — a realistic time to reach Centraal from a morning disembarkation.
At that hour Avis and Hertz in town are still open, with half an hour in hand.
Miss noon and the only Sunday counters left are at Rotterdam The Hague Airport, about 15 minutes from the pier by our routing: Avis until 11 PM, Sixt until 5.
Sixt’s town pages say nothing about Sunday, and the checker reads that as unknown, not closed. We wouldn’t bet a morning on it.
For a Sunday pickup, book Avis or Hertz at Centraal for the first slot. For anything after lunch, book the airport.
Returning a Rotterdam rental when the counter is shut
Four of the six Rotterdam-side desks print some after-hours option. Only two of those are a true key drop.
Returns are the other half of the problem — a car you collected before the cruise, or one you’re dropping on the way out of town.
Avis at Centraal, eight minutes’ drive from the pier, is the easy one: its page says “you can use the key box located on the side of the building for safe key return.”
Sixt on the Weena, 1.6 miles from the pier, says “vehicle returns are only possible during opening hours.” Plan around that.
Sixt Hofplein, 3.1 miles out, takes cars after hours at the Parking Hofplein garage, level 3B, but the ticket and key still go back to the branch in opening hours. On a Sunday that can mean Monday.
Hertz, 1.8 miles from the ship, says nothing on its page about after-hours keys — ask before you assume.
Hertz charges an extra day once a return is more than 29 minutes past the 24-hour mark. That’s the real deadline on a morning return, not the counter’s closing time.
At Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Avis has a key drop in the departure hall and Sixt takes cars around the clock.
Photograph the fuel gauge, the odometer and all four sides — your photos, not your memory, are the record. Then drop the key.
No left-luggage at the terminal, and what to do instead
Holland America says plainly that the pier won’t hold your luggage.
Holland America: “There is no luggage storage at the pier.” That rules out a morning in town before collecting the car.
Bounce, a bag-storage app, listed nine Rotterdam spots from €3.50 a day, one about 7 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal. If your spot charges €3.50 (about US$4) for each bag, four cases come to about €14 (about US$16) for the day, our arithmetic.
Or collect the car first and let the boot do the job — but then the car is parked wherever you go.
Its “Easy Rotterdam with Airport Transfer” tour, from $129 and about 3¾ hours, ends at Schiphol and is only for flights leaving after 3 PM. It’s a city tour with your bags in the coach, not a car.
Decide where the cases spend the day first, not last.
Three days after the ship, ending at Schiphol
Two of you, three days collected by Centraal, returned at Schiphol. Type in your own quote and any drop charge.
The rental, line by line
Three days at an assumed €40, worked out in euros by us. Fuel covers only the 39-mile run to Schiphol at 30 mpg and €9.33 a gallon, so add your touring miles; the litre price behind it (€2.465) is an aggregator’s figure for late September. A Rotterdam car left at Schiphol may carry a one-way charge no brand printed: type it into the drop box. VAT is treated as included, surcharges and tolls as zero, since we read no figure for either. Conversions use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 euro reference rate (about $1.12); your card’s rate will be a little different.
Three assumed days at €40 (about US$45), plus fuel for the run to Schiphol, come to about €132 (about US$150), our arithmetic.
That’s before any one-way charge for leaving a Rotterdam car at the airport — Hertz says only that “a fee may apply.”
AirportsTaxiTransfers quoted the return run, port to Schiphol on Oct 6, 2026 at noon, at €137.50 (about US$155) for a sedan and €150 (about US$170) for an MPV.
If all you want is the airport, that sedan is the simpler buy — no rent, no drop charge, no fuel stop.
The car earns its place only when the three days hold something the train can’t reach.
Schiphol’s five brands all sit in one hall, open by 7 AM. The Schiphol page lists their hours.
Return it the evening before an early flight — not the morning of.
Booking a Rotterdam car for disembark day
On Oct 3, 2026 Discover Cars showed Rotterdam rentals from $39.47 a day in US dollars. A Sunday pickup narrows that list to two town desks, whatever the price.
Set the pickup time inside the desk’s hours — on a Sunday that means before noon in town. What happens if you’re late for a pickup.
- Centraal and airport desks together
- One-way to Schiphol priced in the total
- Many companies side by side
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
