From Schiphol’s car-rental page, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Schiphol keeps its rental desks in one place — the Car Rental and Service Desk in Schiphol Plaza, the airport’s main foyer.
Hertz closes last, at 11:30 PM — and Hertz and Enterprise open first, at 6.
Europcar is the one with weekend hours that differ: 7 AM on Saturday and Sunday instead of 6:30.
Green Motion works from Keplerstraat 4 in Badhoevedorp with a free shuttle, per Discover Cars’ Schiphol page. That’s a reseller’s description — not Green Motion’s own page.
An overnight flight from the US that lands at 7 AM finds every counter open — on any day of the week.
From Schiphol to Wilhelminakade by car
Mostly motorway, then the last few miles through Rotterdam to the pier.
Holland America puts Schiphol “approximately 40 miles (65 kilometers)” from the terminal, “about 60 minutes” depending on traffic. Our free-flow routing says 39.3 miles and 56 minutes — close enough that the difference is traffic.
Plan on the weekday rush adding to that — the routing assumes empty roads.
The daytime motorway limit is 100 km/h almost everywhere, roughly 62 mph. The road-rules section has the rest.
We read no toll operator’s page for this route and add no toll. The Belgium page says why.
Rotterdam has no low-emission zone for cars, so a diesel rental can drive straight to the pier.
There’s nowhere at the terminal to leave a rental — The €19 cruise lot is the only parking we found.
One run from Schiphol to the ship: the car against €95 and the train
Two of you, one day, collected in Schiphol Plaza. Every box takes your own figures.
The rental, line by line
Our euro arithmetic, not a quote. The €40 day rate is assumed; Discover Cars’ Schiphol page showed “from $28.78” on Oct 3, 2026, in dollars as displayed. Fuel is the 39-mile run at 30 mpg, priced at €9.33 a US gallon, our conversion of a €2.465-a-litre Euro 95 price (week of Sep 28, from fuel-prices.eu quoting the EU bulletin). The airport box starts at 0% because no Dutch page we read prints a surcharge; 21% VAT is assumed inside the quote; we found no child-seat price. Leaving a Schiphol car in Rotterdam may carry a one-way charge no brand printed: type it into the drop box. Dollar amounts use the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, roughly $1.12 to the euro; your bank will apply its own.
At an assumed €40 (about US$45) a day, one day plus fuel comes to about €52 (about US$60), our arithmetic — and €12 of that is fuel.
Against Holland America’s €95 (about US$105) cab, the car looks about €43 cheaper on paper, not on the final bill.
The car still has to end somewhere, and both endings cost money we can’t print.
Return it in Rotterdam and Hertz’s page warns that “a fee may apply” for a one-way; keep it, and the cruise lot charges €19 for every 24 hours.
City Airport Taxis lists Schiphol to the cruise port at €135.79 (about US$150) for a three-seat sedan, €123 (about US$140) for its premium sedan, €147.60 (about US$165) for a four-seat MPV and €190.65 (about US$215) for an eight-seat minivan, with an hour’s wait included. AirportsTaxiTransfers quoted the return run, port to Schiphol on Oct 6, 2026 at noon, at €137.50 (about US$155) for a sedan and €150 (about US$170) for an MPV.
So the €95 is Holland America’s estimate, not a fare, and the booked sedans run about €40 higher — the calculator shows both.
On a rank taxi’s meter, the 2026 tariff over 63.2 km and 56 minutes works out near €234 (about US$265) with no traffic, our arithmetic; the cap applies to rank taxis, not pre-booked cars. Agree a fixed price at the rank, not halfway down the motorway.
The train beats all of them for two people: the Intercity direct takes 26 minutes, and the supplements come to €6.40 for the pair before the NS fare, which its planner shows for your date. NS adds €1.60 for a single-use paper ticket. NS adds €1.60 for a single-use paper ticket.
Holland America sells its own Schiphol transfers without a published price; you book through your advisor and send flight details 14 days ahead.
For two of you going straight aboard, take the train, not a car. Rent at Schiphol only if the car has days of work ahead.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport: 6.5 miles out, two desks
If your connection lands at Rotterdam’s own airport, the math changes completely.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport, at Airportplein 60, is about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) from Wilhelminakade by our routing — 18 minutes, against Schiphol’s 56.
Avis keeps 8:30 AM to 11 PM daily at the Car Rental Center, Airportplein 4, with a key drop in the departure hall; Sixt keeps 9 to 5 and takes returns at any hour. Both cards are on the desks page.
A one-day car there runs about €42 (about US$45) with fuel at our assumed rate, our arithmetic.
At Rotterdam The Hague Airport the taxis wait right next to the building; the airport prints a booking number, +31 10 262 04 06, but no fares.
A rank taxi’s meter over that distance runs about €47 (about US$55) for up to four, our arithmetic — a few euros above a one-day rental, with no car to hand back afterwards.
From Rotterdam The Hague Airport, bus 33 runs to Meijersplein for metro E; the airport says about 30 minutes to Rotterdam Centraal, then metro D south to Wilhelminaplein.

Asking for an automatic at a Dutch counter
Sixt sells automatics in the Netherlands as a separate category. That’s all we could confirm.
Sixt lists “Automatic car Netherlands” as its own category; no page we read says how many automatics a Rotterdam desk keeps or what they cost.
Discover Cars lets you filter for automatics. It doesn’t guarantee one, so book early.
Book the automatic as its own class, not as a note in the comments box — then the booking itself names the gearbox.
If you can drive a manual, include manual cars in the search. More cars, more choice.
Either way, the deposit rules are the same; the desks page covers the €250 hold.
Booking a Schiphol car you’ll leave in Rotterdam
Discover Cars’ Schiphol page showed “from” $28.78 a day on Oct 3, 2026, in dollars as displayed; its Rotterdam The Hague Airport page showed $44.58.
