Five drives from Wilhelminakade, timed on empty roads
Each time is OpenStreetMap routing from the terminal’s front door, no traffic and no stops.
| From the terminal to | One way | Time | There and back | What’s there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kinderdijk | 13.3 mi (21.4 km) | 26 min | 26.6 mi | The mills; footpath free all year |
| Delft | 11.2 mi (18.0 km) | 23 min | 22.4 mi | Royal Delft, daily 9:30–5 |
| Gouda | 16.3 mi (26.2 km) | 28 min | 32.6 mi | Cheese market, Thursdays, early Apr to late Aug |
| The Hague / Scheveningen | 20.4 mi (32.9 km) | 38 min | 40.8 mi | The Mauritshuis, €21 |
| Keukenhof | 34.3 mi (55.3 km) | 53 min | 68.6 mi | Spring only; 2027 dates not out |
OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), free-flow, from Wilhelminakade 699; ours. Add traffic. Checked Oct 3, 2026
None of these is a long day — even Keukenhof, the farthest, is under an hour each way by our routing.
What decides the route is the calendar, not the map — two of the five keep seasonal hours, and one has prices we couldn’t confirm.
Every drive here stays inside the Netherlands; Belgium gets its own page, with its own rules.
Hire the car in town, not at Schiphol — the desks by Centraal are minutes from the pier. The desk cards have the hours.
Kinderdijk’s windmills: 26 minutes from the ship, one ticket for two mills
The windmills are the closest of these stops and the one with the least reliable price page.
Kinderdijk’s 19 windmills date from about 1740 and have been a UNESCO site since 1997, per Wikipedia — and by our routing they’re 26 minutes from the terminal.
The dyke path along the mills is free all year. One ticket covers the two museum mills and is sold on kinderdijk.com, so check the price for your date there.
We couldn’t read Kinderdijk’s hours or parking pages, so we can’t tell you what parking costs or when the gates shut.
The waterbus line 20 runs from Rotterdam’s Erasmusbrug to Dordrecht; we couldn’t confirm its Kinderdijk connection or fares, so driving is the plan we can actually stand behind.
Go early in the day, check the ticket page on the morning you drive, and walk the dyke path even if you skip the paid part.
A day to Delft and The Hague, costed in euros
Two adults, one day, collected by Centraal. Change any box to your own figures.
The rental, line by line
Arithmetic in euros, ours; the desk’s screen has the real figure. We set the day rate at €40 as an assumption, since Discover Cars’ Rotterdam floor was $39.47 on Oct 3, 2026. Fuel covers 41 miles, out to Scheveningen and back, at 30 mpg and €9.33 a US gallon (our conversion of €2.465 a litre for Euro 95, week of Sep 28, via fuel-prices.eu). Dutch VAT at 21% is taken as already in the price, the station surcharge box starts at 0% because nobody printed one, and tolls and child seats add nothing because we read no figure for either. Mauritshuis entry is the adult price; under-19s are free, so lower the box for a family. We converted euros to dollars at the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12; expect your card to differ slightly.
Royal Delft’s pottery and museum, at Rotterdamseweg 196, open daily 9:30 AM to 5 PM; its page showed no ticket price. It’s 11.2 miles from the terminal, so it fits on the way to The Hague, not as a day of its own.
The Mauritshuis, at Plein 29 in The Hague, opens Monday 1 to 6 PM and Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 6; adults pay €21, under-19s go free, and there’s parking within 100 m. That’s about US$25 an adult.
For two adults, one assumed €40 (about US$45) rental day, about €13 of fuel for the 40.8-mile round trip and two Mauritshuis tickets come to about €95 (about US$105), our arithmetic.
Bring a teenager and the museum costs nothing extra — under-19s go free, so only the adults pay.
The Hague runs a diesel-only environmental zone — petrol cars aren’t affected. The zones section explains what a diesel rental needs.
Ask for a petrol car at the desk and the zone stops being your problem.
Gouda’s Thursday market and Keukenhof’s eight weeks
Two of the classic Dutch days only exist part of the year.
Gouda’s cheese market runs Thursday mornings, 10:00 to 12:30, from early April to late August, and is closed on Ascension Day, per the Gouda tourist office (its page showed 2025 dates, so check 2027) — outside those months you get the town, not the market.
Gouda is 16.3 miles from the pier by our routing, 28 minutes on empty roads, so a market morning still leaves the afternoon free.
Keukenhof opened March 19 to May 10 in 2026; when we read its site on Oct 4, 2026 it still showed that season and no 2027 dates. We read no ticket or parking price on its site — so there’s nothing to cost.
It’s the farthest stop here, 34.3 miles and 53 minutes from the terminal.
A Thursday in May could hold both by our routing, if Keukenhof keeps a similar season. Check its 2027 dates before you build a spring trip around them.
Driving the day before you board, or the day you land
The same drive costs you more effort on one side of the cruise than the other.
The day before boarding is the easier one — you’re rested, the bags sit in the hotel, and the car goes back to a desk that’s open on a weekday or Saturday morning.
After the cruise is harder — Holland America says there’s no luggage storage at the pier, so the cases ride with you all day.
Sunday is the other catch — the town desks barely open. The disembark-day page sets out who’s staffed.
If Rotterdam is only a port call for you, the question changes. Holland America’s “Amsterdam On Your Own” coach day is $109, about 8 hours with roughly 1½ hours each way, and only for guests who aren’t starting or ending in Rotterdam, which is Amsterdam by coach, not by car.
Book the day trip for the day before, and leave the day after for getting home.
Booking one car for one Dutch day out
Discover Cars’ Rotterdam floor on Oct 3, 2026 was $39.47 a day, shown in US dollars — the floor of the market, not the price of your Saturday.
A single day from a Centraal desk keeps it simple: no one-way fee, no week in the cruise lot. What Discover Cars includes.
- Centraal desks in one search
- Ask for petrol if The Hague is on the plan
- Many companies side by side
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Windmills, Delft and The Hague by car: what people ask
How far is Kinderdijk from the Rotterdam cruise terminal?
About 13.3 road miles (21.4 km) and 26 minutes on empty roads, by our OpenStreetMap routing from Wilhelminakade.
How much are Kinderdijk tickets?
One ticket covers the two museum mills and is sold online at kinderdijk.com, so check the price for your date there. The dyke path past the mills is free all year.
Can I drive a diesel rental car into The Hague?
The Hague has a green environmental zone: a diesel car needs emission class 4 or higher. Petrol, LPG and electric cars aren’t restricted, so the simplest fix is to ask for a petrol car.
What day is the Gouda cheese market?
Thursday mornings, 10:00 to 12:30, from early April to late August, closed on Ascension Day, per the Gouda tourist office. Its page showed 2025 dates, so check 2027.
When is Keukenhof open in 2027?
Its site didn’t show 2027 dates when we checked on Oct 4, 2026. The 2026 season ran March 19 to May 10.
How much does the Mauritshuis cost?
Adults pay €21 and visitors under 19 go free. It opens Monday 1 to 6 PM and Tuesday to Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM, with parking within 100 m.
