Four questions that settle the car for a Rotterdam sailing
How you arrive, what you’ll do, the headcount and the gearbox. One tap per row.
The second row decides most trips — the others only nudge it.
Rotterdam’s terminal sits on a metro and two tram lines, and the station has the direct Schiphol train — so a city stay needs no wheels at all.
The car starts to matter when the plan leaves the city: the mills at Kinderdijk, Royal Delft, a Belgian leg.
The last row is there because we couldn’t confirm how many automatics any Rotterdam desk keeps — so treat that row as unknown.
Metro D, two trams and a rank-taxi meter
These are the rides that put you on the ship without renting anything.
| Ride | Price, read Oct 3, 2026 | Time or note | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercity direct, Schiphol to Rotterdam Central | NS planner fare, plus €3.20 supplement | 26 min | NS pages |
| Metro D or E, Centraal to Wilhelminaplein | Contactless card at the gate | Four stops, then a four-minute walk | RET + Holland America |
| Trams 3 and 5 to Wilhelminaplein | Contactless card | Hofplein diversions until Nov 22, 2026 | RET page |
| Taxi, Centraal to the terminal, rank taxi on the meter | About €19.68 for up to four, in free-flowing traffic | 3.7 km, 7 min, our arithmetic | Our arithmetic |
| Same ride in a five-to-eight-seat taxi | About €27.70 | The van tariff | Our arithmetic |
| Tourist Day Ticket | €17.00 (€14.50 on RET’s airport page) | Bus, tram, metro and waterbus in South Holland | RET pages disagree |
| Uber or Bolt | App price | Both run in Rotterdam, per Holland America | Line page |
Taxi rows apply the government’s 2026 rank-taxi tariff to our routing, not a quote; a slow ride costs more. Checked Oct 3, 2026
NS runs the Intercity direct from Schiphol to Rotterdam Central in 26 minutes on a normal day. NS schedules track works some weekends and nights, so check its planner for your date and the day before; if the direct train is cancelled, a slower train or a booked transfer is the backup.
That train needs a €3.20 (about US$4) supplement on the Schiphol–Rotterdam stretch, per NS’s 2026 price list; a single-use chipcard adds €1.60 — small money next to a cab.
NS shows the base fare for your date in its planner, so check it there; the supplement is €3.20.
From Rotterdam Centraal, metro D or E runs four stops to Wilhelminaplein, which Holland America calls “a four-minute walk” from the terminal.
Trams 3 and 5 also stop at Wilhelminaplein; they were numbered 23 and 25 until January 2025.
Works at Hofplein divert many tram lines until Nov 22, 2026, per RET’s notice, so check RET before a tram ride in that window.
The government’s 2026 maximum taxi tariff for a car of up to four passengers is €4.31 to start, €3.17 a kilometre and €0.52 a minute; for five to eight it’s €8.77, €4.00 and €0.59.
Run that over the 2.3 miles (3.7 km) from Centraal and a rank taxi meters about €20 (about US$20) in free-flowing traffic, our arithmetic. The ceiling is a rate, not a fare, so a slow ride costs more. A van for five to eight runs near €28 (about US$30).
A fixed price is allowed, but it has to be agreed before the ride starts, so settle the price at the rank. Then get in.
RET takes contactless debit and credit cards and phones at the gates. You don’t need a ticket machine — just the card you’d use at home, if it’s contactless.
RET’s Tourist Day Ticket page prices it at €17 (about US$19) (Oct 2026) for bus, tram, metro and waterbus across South Holland. An older RET airport page still shows €14.50 (about US$16); pay what the gate or app shows.
Dollar amounts here convert at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, roughly $1.12 a euro, and your card will settle at its own.
Your US licence in the Netherlands, and where the permit comes in
Four official sources and one rental brand, all read on Oct 3, 2026.
The State Department: a valid US licence “is valid for use in the Netherlands while in tourist or visitor status”, and a permit “is not required for short-term visitors”.
The RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, says a tourist may drive on a foreign licence, and suggests an international permit only if the licence doesn’t use the A to E categories.
The US Embassy in The Hague says to carry it “preferably in combination with an International Driver’s License”, which AAA issues — “preferably”, not “must”.
The Dutch government’s traffic guide accepts an international licence “accompanied by the original” licence. The permit is a translation, not a licence, so carry both.
Hertz accepts non-EU licences printed in Roman script and wants the permit only for other scripts; it also wants the licence held a year.
Read together, the official sources allow a US licence on its own; the embassy’s advice leans toward carrying the permit anyway.
Driving on into Belgium? We didn’t read Belgium’s permit rules — the Belgium page covers what we did read for that leg.
AAA issues the permit in the US — not at a Dutch rental desk. Sort it before you fly.
Bikes on the right, trams in the middle, and 100 km/h by day
Most of what surprises an American driver here is about bicycles, not cars.
Drivers must yield to cyclists, turning drivers give way to cyclists and walkers going straight, and centre lanes are often kept for trams, buses and taxis. In Rotterdam you’ll meet that rule before any speed limit.
At unmarked junctions, traffic from the right goes first. Expect it in residential streets.
50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 on other roads outside them, 100 on main roads and 130 on motorways by default; but from 6 AM to 7 PM almost every motorway is 100, and after 7 PM it’s 100, 120 or 130 as signed.
So the motorway sign you’ll see most on a daytime drive to Schiphol reads 100. Plan for that.
We didn’t read the Dutch fine schedule, so we can’t price a speeding ticket. Drive the number on the sign.
The limit is 0.5 per mille blood alcohol (0.05%), and 0.2 (0.02%) for a beginner, which in Dutch law means anyone in the first five years of a first licence, per the Dutch government. That second figure catches newer drivers, so check when your licence was issued.
Holding a phone while driving is banned; hands-free only. The government’s page doesn’t print the fine. Mount it or leave it in the bag.
Anyone under 18 and under 1.35 m rides in a suitable child restraint. We found no Dutch rental price for a child seat — ask the desk before you count on one.
Rotterdam itself has no low-emission zone for cars; The Hague does, for diesels. The zones section has the detail.
When a car beats the train in Rotterdam, and when it doesn’t
Rent
- Five or more of you with luggage, where two taxis or a van would be needed
- Kinderdijk, Gouda or Keukenhof in season, each under an hour from the pier by our routing
- A Belgian leg before or after the cruise
Skip it
- Schiphol to the ship on sailing day: the train and metro D do it
- A city day before boarding: the car would sit in a garage
- Any plan where the car waits seven days at €19 a day, plus rent
The car loses on the straight transfer and wins on the day out — that’s the whole pattern.
The airport-to-pier run is priced in full on the Schiphol page, and the parking sum is on the desks page.
Weigh the car against the train fare.
If the answer is yes, book the desk that fits the day
Discover Cars’ Rotterdam “from” price on Oct 3, 2026 was a floor in US dollars, not a quote — the desk page has the real one.
The desk matters more than the brand here — Saturday afternoons and Sundays thin the town counters out. How Discover Cars works.
- Centraal and airport desks together
- Ask for an automatic in the filters
- Many companies side by side
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Driving or riding in Rotterdam: what people ask
Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in the Netherlands?
The State Department and the RDW say a valid US licence works for tourists. The US Embassy in The Hague advises carrying it “preferably in combination with” an International Driver’s License, so we’d bring one.
How do I get from Rotterdam Centraal to the cruise terminal?
Take metro D or E four stops to Wilhelminaplein, which Holland America puts a four-minute walk from the terminal. Trams 3 and 5 stop there too; a rank taxi meters about €20 for up to four in free-flowing traffic, our arithmetic, and the national tariff is a rate, not a fare.
Is there a train from Schiphol to Rotterdam?
Yes. NS’s Intercity direct runs Schiphol to Rotterdam Central in 26 minutes and needs a €3.20 supplement on a normal day; NS runs track works some weekends, so check its planner for your date. The base fare shows in the planner.
What is the drink-driving limit in the Netherlands?
Per the Dutch government, 0.5 per mille blood alcohol (0.05%), or 0.2 (0.02%) in the first five years of a first licence.
What is the speed limit on Dutch motorways?
From 6 AM to 7 PM almost every motorway is 100 km/h. After 7 PM it’s 100, 120 or 130 as signed, per the Dutch government.
Do Uber and Bolt work in Rotterdam?
Holland America says both are available. At Schiphol they pick up from a separate app pick-up point, not the taxi rank.
