The verdict

The question at Park Hyatt is which terminal your ship uses. By our road routing the Overseas Passenger Terminal is 0.1 road miles (0.2 km) from its Hickson Road door, about 1 minute, and White Bay is 3.7.

Hyatt's page lists 155 rooms and suites, a swimming pool, a fitness centre and a spa. It says private luxury vehicle transfers can be arranged through the hotel at an extra cost, with no price and no word on whether they go to a terminal. It puts the airport about 11.5 km and 20 minutes away; our routing gives 14.7 km.

Breakfast is served in The Dining Room, but Hyatt says only that it's available when included in the rate. Parking is valet, with no price printed. Guests arriving early can leave luggage with the team — and pets aren't permitted.

I'd book it if the short hop to the Overseas Passenger Terminal is what you're paying for, and I'd ask about the transfer price and which rates include breakfast first.

Book it if

  • You want to cover the last stretch to the Overseas Passenger Terminal in about a minute
  • A pool and a spa are part of how you want the night to go
  • You'll arrive early and leave bags with the team

Look elsewhere if

  • Your ship is at White Bay, 3.7 road miles away, not at the quay.
  • You want the transfer priced before you book.
  • You're travelling with a pet.

Map pins from the Esri World Geocoder, address matches, except the InterContinental: the address it prints geocoded to the wrong suburb, so its pin is Esri’s point for 117 Macquarie Street. The terminal pins are Esri’s name match for the Overseas Passenger Terminal and its street point for James Craig Road, not berths.

From Hickson Road the Overseas Passenger Terminal is the nearest of any hotel we checked, on our routing — a short stroll, not a cab ride.

Parking for the cruise

No parking at the terminal on cruise days

Driving in? On the Port Authority's account, no parking is on offer at the Overseas Passenger Terminal for ships' days, and White Bay's one car park is a drop-off lot with a 15-minute limit. Wilson Parking's cruise rates near both run A$20 to A$51 (about US$14–35) a day; its page doesn't name the currency, so we read them as Australian dollars.
