“No rental car companies located at the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal”
That line comes straight off JAXPORT’s transportation page, which adds that “several rental car companies” sit near the airport. Its FAQ tells renters to ask the company itself how it gets people from its closest office to the ship.
The closest one we found is an Enterprise on North Main Street, about 7.4 miles from the terminal. Its page offers “Pick-Up Service Available” — and doesn’t say whether that reaches the cruise port.
So think about what a car does for you if you land at Jacksonville International, about 12 miles out by the port’s count.
You drive it to the airport return lane or a branch across town, and then you need a ride to the ship anyway.
It’s an extra stop, not a way to the ship.
zTrip, the airport’s cab company, doesn’t publish fares; Rome2Rio, a third party, puts the trip at $28 to $35. From JAX, that cab is the whole job.
Four nights at sea, and the rental still running
The other way to use a rental is to drive it to the terminal and leave it there.
JAXPORT’s lot charges $17 a day, tax included and, per its parking page, credit cards only (its FAQ still mentions cash), and the rental company keeps billing you for every one of those days as well.
On a four-night sailing that’s four more rental days plus five days of parking — about $324 at an assumed $45 a day — against roughly $70 in cabs there and back from JAX at Rome2Rio’s top figure.
Hand the car back before you board, not after you dock.
Five places to start, from 12 to 162 miles away
| Starting point | Rental to JAX, all in | The alternative | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| JAX, about 12 miles | No desk at the ship to take it | A cab at $28–$35 by Rome2Rio’s estimate, or $324 to leave a rental parked through a 4-night cruise | Cab |
| A Disney or Universal hotel desk, about 154–162 miles | $73 | The bus at $23.98 a seat, then a ride from downtown; a private car from $734.57 | Car, for families |
| Savannah (SAV), about 134 miles | $72 | None published; ask for a quote | Car |
| Gainesville (GNV), about 84 miles | $68 | None published | Car |
| Daytona Beach (DAB), about 97 miles | $69 | None published | Car |
Two people, one day, our math: an assumed $45 base rate and an assumed 10% airport fee (nothing at a hotel desk), Florida’s $2 surcharge (not at SAV, which is in Georgia), the county’s sales tax (Georgia’s 7% at SAV) and fuel. Each rental ends at JAX, so add about $35 for the cab to the ship, Rome2Rio’s top figure. The parked-car number is four extra rental days plus five days at $17. Illustrative
Read the first row as a cost, not a saving: from JAX the rental sits on top of the cab rather than in place of it.
Orlando is the closest call.
Greyhound and FlixBus run the trip from $23.98 a seat, but they end at the bus terminal downtown, and the one private car we found costs from $734.57, carries up to three and drops you at a city address rather than the port.
From Savannah, Gainesville or Daytona we found no published ride to the port at all, which makes the one-way less a bargain than the plan by default. Price it for your dates, then add the cab from JAX.
Where does your Jacksonville trip begin and end?
The first row pulls hardest — a JAX arrival leans toward no, a Savannah or Gainesville one toward yes — and a night in St. Augustine on either side is usually what settles a close one.
Find your plan below, then follow its link
| The plan | Rent? | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Landing at JAX on sail morning | No | About 12 miles, and a cab or rideshare handles it. Every ride from JAX. |
| Orlando or Disney first | Yes, with a family | About three hours, and no tolls from the parks. Orlando to JAXPORT. |
| Landing at Savannah or Gainesville | Yes | Neither has a published ride to the port. Those airports to the ship. |
| St. Augustine or Amelia Island | Yes | The drive is half of why you’re going. The coast before or after. |
| A night by the airport | No | Twelve of our top twenty hotels run a ride from JAX. The night before. |
| A road trip after the cruise | Yes | Cab to JAX, pick up the car there. Renting after the cruise. |
| Your own car from home | No rental | $17 a day at the terminal lot. JAXPORT parking. |
Florida’s seat rule rides along in a rental
Florida’s statute calls for a crash-tested child restraint for kids aged 5 and under, and a rental car gets no exemption.
Up to age 3 that means a carrier or the car’s own integrated seat — at 4 or 5, a booster will do.
Size the car to the bags, not the people. For two, Enterprise’s midsize (5 seats, 3 bags) is plenty, and four with cruise luggage want the standard SUV, which it rates at 5 seats and 5 bags.
Six or seven belong in the 7-passenger minivan, 7 seats and 5 bags. Enterprise’s full-size SUV also seats 7, but it’s rated for just 3 bags, apparently counting the third row as in use; eight need the 8-passenger van, rated 8 and 5. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Renting a seat at the counter is where it gets expensive. Avis charges “usually” $14 a day for one, with a ceiling of $84 per rental, and Budget’s page shows $14.50 and $87.
Watch the Orlando one-way in particular. Avis adds $50 when a rented seat is dropped at a different branch from the one it came from — and a Disney-to-JAX rental does precisely that.
Your own seat flies free on American, Delta, Southwest or JetBlue, going by each airline’s policy page.
A car for JAXPORT, answered
Do I need a car for a JAXPORT cruise?
Not when you fly into Jacksonville International, about 12 miles from the terminal by the port’s count; a cab or rideshare covers that. A car pays its way when you start in Orlando, land at Savannah or Gainesville, or spend a night in St. Augustine or on Amelia Island on either side of the cruise.
Can I return a rental car at the JAXPORT cruise terminal?
No. JAXPORT’s own page says no rental company operates from the terminal, and the closest office we found is about 7.4 miles away. The simplest return is at JAX, where some counters stay open until 1 AM, followed by a cab or rideshare to the ship.
Is it cheaper to keep my rental car during the cruise?
Rarely. The rental keeps billing through every day at sea, and the port lot adds $17 a day. On a four-night sailing we put that at about $307 with an assumed $45 rate, while a cab from JAX runs roughly $70 for both legs.
How much is a taxi from Jacksonville airport to the cruise port?
zTrip, which runs the airport’s taxis, doesn’t publish fares. Rome2Rio, a third-party site, estimates $28 to $35 for the roughly 12 miles.
