Your rental ends at the airport, not the ship
The port says it plainly: “There are no rental car companies located at the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal, but there are several rental car companies near the airport.” So the plan we’d build for most families is a one-way car from the Orlando hotel to Jacksonville’s airport — a cab or rideshare covers the final 12 miles or so.
Every alternative breaks somewhere — and not in a small way.
The bus costs less per seat but stops downtown, 13 miles from the ship. The train reaches Jacksonville at 4:11 PM — too late for that day’s sailing, not just tight.
Neither Carnival nor Norwegian, the two lines sailing from here, sells a ride up from Orlando that we could find.
The car is right for you if
- You’re traveling as a family, or with cruise-size bags
- Car seats are coming regardless
- The drive can happen the afternoon before
- Ending at JAX and riding the last stretch is fine by you
The bus or a private car suits you if
- It’s just one or two of you, with little luggage
- Three hours at the wheel after the parks sounds like punishment
- Sail morning is your only chance to drive
- Flying home from MCO would mean driving the whole way back
Why sail morning is the wrong day to drive
Three hours on an empty road is closer to four with a stop and Jacksonville traffic — and the drop-off and a taxi still come after that.
Carnival asks you to arrive in your “scheduled arrival appointment window,” per JAXPORT. Norwegian’s fleet-wide rule is to be checked in and on board an hour before departure.
Neither leaves room for a family coming up I-95 that morning. Neither forgives a late one, either.
Drive up the afternoon before instead. Drop the car at JAX, take the hotel’s shuttle, and ride to the ship in the morning — for the bed, see the 20 hotels we rank for the night before.
I-4, I-95 and a stop in Daytona
Disney Springs to the terminal is about 162 miles and 3 hr 14 min; from Universal, about 154 miles; from MCO, about 158 miles and 3 hr 11 min. Those are our route estimates with no traffic, and there’s no official figure to check them against.
From Disney or Universal you pay nothing: I-4 east and I-95 north are free in their general lanes, and the I-4 Express lanes are optional and transponder-only.
From MCO there’s a single plaza on S.R. 528 west to I-4, $2.24 by transponder and $2.54 by plate as of July 1, 2026 — and in a rental, that one plaza triggers the company’s toll program for the day.
Daytona Beach makes the natural halfway stop, about 97 miles short of the terminal. Its airport has counters for Alamo and six more companies.
Coming into Jacksonville, JAXPORT’s directions from the airport run I-95 south and I-295 east to Exit 41. Arriving from the south, I-295 around the east side reaches the same exit.
| On the one MCO toll | Day fee | How the tolls are billed | Cap per rental | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TollPass (Enterprise, Alamo, National) | $4.95 | Whichever is highest: video, cash or undiscounted. It turns on by itself | $34.65 | terms |
| e-Toll (Avis, Budget) | $6.95 | Non-discounted rates. e-Toll Unlimited, charged every rental day, is a different product | $34.95 | terms |
| PlatePass (Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty, All-Inclusive) | $14.99, every rental day in Florida | Included. Say no, then drive through a cashless toll, and it’s $9.99 for that day plus tolls | Weekly cap unconfirmed | terms |
| Your own transponder | None | Bring your own tag (SunPass, SunPass PRO, E-PASS or E-ZPass), put the rental’s plate and dates on the account, then clear them afterwards. Express lanes on I-295 and I-4 take transponders only | — | SunPass |
Each company’s toll page, Sept 27, 2026. The programs are statewide, so a Disney-area pickup follows the same rules. Checked Sept 27, 2026
4:11 PM, and other reasons the train won’t do
| The route | How long | The problem | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way rental | From MCO or a Disney or Universal hotel desk to JAX or a Jacksonville office | 3 hr 14 min from Disney and 3 hr 11 min from MCO on empty roads, by our estimates | About 12 more miles from JAX to the ship |
| Bus | Greyhound and FlixBus sell the same trips, from 555 N John Young Pkwy or the Florida Mall, eight times a day, to the JTA Intercity Bus Terminal at 1111 W Forsyth St, downtown. From $23.98; neither stops at MCO | About 2 hours 40 minutes, by the companies’ own figure | The terminal sits 13 miles from the bus station, by our estimate |
| Train | Amtrak’s Silver Meteor leaves Orlando at 12:36 PM and reaches Jacksonville at 4:11 PM — too late for any ship that day. The station is on Clifford Lane, northwest of downtown | About 3½ hours | Works only the day before |
| Private car | The one published private car we found, on Viator, starts at $734.57 for up to three — and drops at city addresses, not the port | Door to door, almost | One price for the whole car |
| Cruise-line transfer | Neither Carnival nor Norwegian publishes one from JAX, and Carnival’s Orlando transfers go only to Port Canaveral | — | Not available |
Operators’ own figures, as published. Checked Sept 28, 2026
The train is the option that looks right on a map, and only there.
It leaves Orlando at 12:36 PM and pulls into a station on Clifford Lane, northwest of downtown, at 4:11 PM — fine for a night in a hotel, no use for a same-day sailing.

What the bus fare leaves out
| Group | Car to JAX, then a taxi | Bus seats only | Private car |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $108 Midsize car, $45/day assumed, + 1 taxi from JAX | $48 + the ride from downtown, not published | $735 |
| 4 | $124 Standard SUV, $60/day assumed, + 1 taxi from JAX | $96 + the ride from downtown, not published | No published price |
| 6 | $180 7-passenger minivan, $80/day assumed, + 2 taxis from JAX | $144 + the ride from downtown, not published | No published price |
The car column: our assumed base rates (no airport charges), the 6.5% Orange County tax and the state’s $2 surcharge, no tolls from the parks, fuel for 158 miles at 30 mpg and $4.37, then $35 a cab to the ship (the top of Rome2Rio’s range, one cab per four). The bus column is only the $23.98 “from” seat; we found no published fare for the rides to the Orlando station or from the Jacksonville one, so they aren’t in it. The private car is the one published price we found, for up to three, and any one-way drop charge sits on top of the car. Illustrative
The bus looks cheapest because two of its three legs are missing from the number — a gap, not a saving.
Add a ride out to the John Young Parkway station, then 13 miles from downtown Jacksonville to a terminal with almost nothing around it, and the gap narrows — by how much, we found nobody publishing, so we won’t guess.
A couple with carry-ons can make it work. A family with car seats and cruise luggage will have the calmer day in the car.
If you’d like to check our math
Enter who’s traveling, the rate on your quote and the pickup point; taxes, tolls and fuel are already in.
The rental, line by line
Our figures, not a quote from anyone. The $45 base rate is an assumption. On Sept 28, 2026, Discover Cars’ Jacksonville airport page opened at “from $25” a day, with a warning that its US prices might omit some taxes and surcharges — so replace ours with your quote and any one-way drop charge. JAX’s $4-a-day facility charge, for up to five days, comes from the airport authority’s 2025 financial report, while the airport fee % is our assumption. County tax comes from Florida DOR (Duval and Alachua 7.5%, Orange and Volusia 6.5%), as does the $2-a-day surcharge, and Georgia DOR gives Chatham County’s 7%. Gas is AAA’s Sept 27, 2026 Florida average of $4.37, burned at 30 mpg. From MCO, one plaza on S.R. 528 west to I-4 costs $2.24 by transponder, $2.54 by plate, at rates effective July 1, 2026 — make that one toll day if you start at MCO. From Disney or Universal, I-4 and I-95 are free in the general lanes, and the I-4 Express lanes are optional and transponder-only. Since the rental ends at JAX, budget roughly $35 more to reach the ship. The bus fare is the lowest the companies advertise, every other ride is the operator’s published price, and the taxi range comes from Rome2Rio, a third party.
Choose MCO as the pickup and a $9-a-day airport charge joins the total.
The bus row is the interesting one. Type in whatever you’d pay for the 13 miles from downtown to the ship, and see how much of the gap is left.
JAX, or an office closer to the ship?
JAX is the easy answer. Its latest counters stay open until 1 AM; after that, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Sixt all accept after-hours returns, and about 12 miles by taxi or rideshare remain.
Enterprise Northside, 7.4 miles from the ship, is closer — but it shuts at 5:30 on weekdays, at noon on Saturday and all day Sunday.
It does take after-hours returns in a drop box, while the Avis and Budget office on Atlantic Boulevard says its cars must come back in office hours. Every office, with hours.
Rent it the morning you leave
| Park | A day’s parking |
|---|---|
| Walt Disney World | $35 a day for standard parking; Disney Resort hotel guests park free |
| Universal Orlando | $35 including tax, or free after 6 PM on non-event nights (not at Epic Universe) |
Straight from each park’s parking page. Checked Sept 28, 2026
If your hotel runs buses to the parks, a car parked in its lot all week is money spent on nothing.
Collect it the morning you leave, from the Car Care Center or your hotel’s own desk, and point it at I-4 — one day of rental, not a week of parking.
The Car Care Center houses Enterprise, Alamo and National, 7 AM to 6 PM every day, and a free shuttle picks up at select resorts if you book it 2 hours ahead. Whether it does one-ways to Jacksonville isn’t something Disney or the companies say, so get a price before planning around it.
Coming off the ship at JAXPORT
Reverse it and the timing relaxes.
Back in port in the morning, a taxi or rideshare gets you to JAX, whose Avis, Budget and Enterprise counters open at 6, and you can be on I-95 south before lunch.
Return it to MCO or a hotel desk as a one-way, and if it’s Avis at a Universal hotel, ask for the one-way when you book, as Avis requires. Renting after a JAXPORT cruise has the rest.
One search, ending at JAX
Pick up at MCO or a hotel desk and end at JAX.
Whether a drop charge applies, you’ll only know once you search, because we found no company publishing a Florida one-way fee — Enterprise says its charge “varies depending on location and time of year” and shows at booking, Avis says “most locations do not charge a drop-off or one-way fee,” and Hertz decides “on a case-by-case basis.”
- Pick-up: MCO or an Orlando hotel desk
- Drop-off: JAX, open late
- Any one-way fee shows in the price
- Free cancellation, 48 hrs ahead

Jacksonville from Orlando: the usual questions
How far is Orlando from the JAXPORT cruise terminal?
On our route estimates, about 162 miles from Disney Springs and 158 from MCO, on I-4 and I-95. With no traffic, that’s roughly three hours and 10 to 15 minutes.
Are there tolls from Orlando to the Jacksonville cruise port?
From Disney or Universal, none: the general lanes of I-4 and I-95 are free. From MCO, S.R. 528 west to I-4 has one plaza: $2.24 on a transponder, $2.54 by plate. The I-4 Express lanes are optional and take transponders only.
Is there a train from Orlando to Jacksonville for a cruise?
Amtrak’s Silver Meteor leaves Orlando at 12:36 PM and arrives at 4:11 PM, which is too late for a ship the same day. Brightline doesn’t serve Jacksonville.
Is there a shuttle from Orlando airport to JAXPORT?
We found no cruise-line transfer, and Carnival’s Orlando transfers go to Port Canaveral. Greyhound and FlixBus run from Orlando to downtown Jacksonville from $23.98, about 13 miles short of the terminal, and the one private car we found published starts at $734.57 for up to three.
Where do I return an Orlando rental car for a Jacksonville cruise?
For most people, Jacksonville airport (JAX): five counters stay open until 1 AM, several companies take after-hours returns, and it’s about 12 miles from there to the terminal by taxi or rideshare. The terminal itself has no rental counter.

The parks, then a Jacksonville ship?
Share your dates and your group. We plan from Winter Garden, beside the parks, and we’ll set the drive, the night near JAX and the morning run to the terminal, all timed to your ship.
