You’ll finish at JAX, whichever airport you pick
JAXPORT says no rental company is located at the terminal, so the one-way ends at Jacksonville’s airport — where five counters run until 1 AM — and a taxi or rideshare covers the last 12 miles. That makes the real question simple: does the fare you saved beat the car, the fuel, that last ride and a night’s hotel? From Savannah especially, we’d only say yes a day early.
The detour pays if
- The fare gap beats the whole one-way, the last ride included
- You can land the afternoon before
- Two or more of you split the car
- Savannah or St. Augustine is worth a stop to you anyway
Book JAX instead if
- The fares are within shouting distance
- Your flight lands on sail morning
- Nobody wants two hours of I-95 after a flight
- You’re traveling alone and the rental eats the whole saving
Which of the three earns the drive?
| Airport | To the terminal | Pickup tax | One-way to JAX, all in | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daytona Beach (DAB) | About 97 miles, just under 2 hours | 6.5%, Volusia | $69 | The one to check when Orlando looked cheap |
| Gainesville (GNV) | About 84 miles, 1 hour 53 minutes | 7.5%, Alachua | $68 | The shortest drive of the three, and at our rate the lowest total |
| Savannah (SAV) | About 134 miles, 2 hours 39 minutes | 7% in Chatham, maybe more | $72 | The longest, and the one to book a day early |
Drive times are ours, with no traffic, to the cruise terminal. The totals assume two of you, one day at $45 plus a 10% airport fee, Florida’s $2 surcharge on the Florida pickups (a Savannah rental doesn’t carry it), the county tax and fuel; then add about $35 by taxi from JAX, the top of Rome2Rio’s range. Illustrative
Daytona surprises people.
Its terminal holds seven rental companies, with counters across from baggage claim: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National. I-95 north is free the whole way, and Volusia’s 6.5% is the lowest rental tax of the three.
If Orlando was the cheap fare, price DAB before you commit to the longer drive from MCO — it’s about 60 miles closer to the ship.
Gainesville’s case is shorter.
The airport lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National; Avis opens 9 AM to 10 PM, Enterprise 8 AM to 11:59 PM and Hertz 9 AM to 11:59 PM, per the airport and Avis.
The direct route east has no tolls.
The First Coast Expressway, south and west of Jacksonville, is the area’s one tolled road — 22¢ to $1.62 a plaza with a transponder, and you don’t need it.

About $72 to cross a state line
Two of you, SAV to JAX. Leave the ride row for a quote you get yourself; nobody publishes one.
Savannah’s counters are in baggage claim, with the cars in covered lots beside the terminal, and the hours are generous every day of the week.
Avis and Budget run 7 AM to 12:30 AM and Dollar and Thrifty 7 AM to midnight. Payless keeps 7 AM to 11 PM, Alamo, Enterprise and National 8 AM to 10 PM — and Hertz only 8 AM to 8 PM.
Then it’s about 134 miles and 2 hours 39 minutes with no traffic (our route estimate), all on I-95. No tolls, either; I-95 from Savannah is free the whole way.
The Georgia side is where the bill gets murky.
Chatham County’s sales tax is 7%, per Georgia DOR, and Georgia lets cities and counties add a 3% excise on car rentals, which Savannah’s revenue ordinance levies inside the city.
Whether that reaches the airport, we couldn’t confirm.
The rental, line by line
We start from a $45 daily rate — an assumption, not a quote. Discover Cars was showing Jacksonville airport rentals “from $25” on Sept 28, 2026, and notes that some US taxes and surcharges may be missing from its prices. Type the rate on your quote over ours, plus any drop charge.
SAV publishes no facility charge. The 10% in the fees box stands in for airport fees and the possible local rental tax — our guess, not SAV’s number.
Chatham County’s 7% comes from Georgia DOR.
For comparison, JAX adds $4 a day for up to five days, from the airport authority’s 2025 financial report. Florida’s $2 a day and its county taxes (7.5% in Duval and Alachua, 6.5% in Orange and Volusia) are Florida DOR’s; none of those applies to a Savannah pickup.
Fuel: a 30-mpg car over 134 miles, with regular at $4.37 a gallon, the statewide AAA number for Sept 27, 2026. The rental stops at JAX, so budget about $35 more for the ride to the ship; that’s Rome2Rio’s figure, a third party’s.
At our assumed rate it comes to about $72 — before the ride from JAX to the ship.
A one-way that crosses a state line is exactly the kind that can carry a drop charge, too. Look for it in the total before you book.
Land the day before, and return the car that evening
Pick the day and a realistic hour for reaching Jacksonville — after a two-hour drive, not before it.
From Savannah, two hours and 40 minutes of driving with no traffic comes before the drop-off and a taxi. That’s a lot to stack on a morning flight. From Gainesville or Daytona it’s under two hours — shorter, but not by enough.
So land the day before, drive down, hand the car back at JAX that evening and sleep at an airport hotel.
Twelve of our top 20 run a free shuttle from JAX, though only one publishes a ride on to the ship — the night-before list, ranked.
JAX’s counters stay open until 1 AM, and Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Sixt take cars after hours. The nearest neighborhood office, Enterprise Northside, keeps weekday and Saturday-morning hours only; every office is on our JAXPORT rental page.
What each pickup adds in tax
| Picked up in | Rate | Made of | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida, any county | $2.00 a day for 30 days at most | The state rental surcharge, taxed like the rest of the rental | Verified |
| Duval (JAX, Jacksonville) | 7.5% | 6% Florida plus 1.5% county | Verified |
| Alachua (GNV) | 7.5% | The same 6% plus 1.5% | Verified |
| Volusia (DAB) | 6.5% | 6% plus 0.5% — the lowest of the three Florida pickups | Verified |
| Chatham County, Georgia (SAV) | 7% | 4% Georgia and 3% local, per Georgia DOR | Verified |
| Georgia’s local rental excise | Up to 3% | Allowed by state law and levied by Savannah’s ordinance inside the city; we couldn’t tie it to the airport | Unconfirmed at SAV |
| JAX facility charge | $4 a day, 5 days at most | From the airport authority’s fiscal 2025 financial report; we couldn’t confirm this year’s rate | Airport report, 2025 |
| Concession recovery, licence and similar fees | Up to each company | None publishes a figure at JAX | Not published |
Florida’s county rates are from its Department of Revenue’s 2026 surtax table (DR-15DSS). The pickup county sets the rate; where you drop the car doesn’t.
Why the return box matters more than the pickup
Enter SAV, GNV or DAB as the pickup and JAX as the return. It’s the only return that makes sense here, open late and 12 miles from the ship.
Then read the total, not the daily rate, because no company publishes a Florida one-way fee to check it against.
In Enterprise’s words its charge “varies depending on location and time of year” and shows when you book; Avis’s page says “most locations do not charge a drop-off or one-way fee”; Hertz says “on a case-by-case basis.”
- Pick-up: SAV, GNV or DAB
- Return: JAX, open until 1 AM
- Drop charge shown in the total
- No cancellation fee before 48 hours
Savannah, Gainesville, Daytona: the drive to JAXPORT, asked and answered
How far is Savannah airport from the Jacksonville cruise port?
Roughly 134 miles by our routing, all of it I-95, and two hours and 40 minutes if the traffic stays away. You won’t pay a toll.
How do I get from Savannah to JAXPORT for a cruise?
Drive, in practice. We found no shuttle, no cruise-line transfer and no published fare for the trip, so the usual plan is a one-way rental to JAX and a taxi or rideshare for the last 12 miles.
How far is Gainesville from JAXPORT?
From Gainesville’s airport it’s about 84 miles, a little under two hours with no traffic by our estimate, and the direct route has no tolls.
Is Daytona Beach a good airport for a Jacksonville cruise?
Worth pricing, at least. It’s about 97 miles from the terminal — roughly 60 closer than Orlando’s airport — with seven rental companies inside the terminal and a toll-free run up I-95.
What taxes apply to a rental car from Savannah airport?
Chatham County’s 7% sales tax, Georgia’s and the county’s together per Georgia DOR, and possibly a 3% local rental excise that Savannah levies in the city; we couldn’t confirm it reaches the airport. SAV publishes no facility charge.
