$35 or $40, flat, from TPA to the ship
Tampa International lists a flat taxi fare to downtown and the cruise terminal — $40 on its ground-transportation page, $35 in its arriving-passenger guide — for a ride the airport puts at 9.5 miles.
A one-day rental for that trip comes to about $63 by our estimate, once TPA’s $5.95 facility charge, a concession fee and Hillsborough’s 7.5% tax sit on an assumed $45 rate.
Then the car has to go back somewhere. Of the rental brands we checked, none has a cruise-shuttle office in Tampa of the sort Miami and Port Canaveral have, so it ends at a downtown desk that publishes no port shuttle, and you still have to get yourselves and the bags from there to the ship.
On a Sunday, the only downtown counter we found open is the one Avis and Budget share — and it closes at noon.
So from TPA, take the flat fare, not the keys.
Sarasota, Orlando, the beaches and the rest
| If you’re… | Car? | What tips it |
|---|---|---|
| Landing at TPA on sail morning | No | The airport lists a flat cab fare to the terminals, and Carnival sells its guests a transfer. Every ride from TPA. |
| Landing at St. Pete-Clearwater | Close call | Eighteen miles, with a one-way car against an $85 private van. PIE to the ship. |
| Landing at Sarasota | Yes | Fifty-four miles, and no published fare we could find for any other way in. SRQ to the ship. |
| Coming from Orlando or Disney | A car for families; the bus on a budget | No tolls from the parks. The bus starts at $13.98 a seat, but from a station, not from your hotel. Orlando to Port Tampa Bay. |
| Staying on Clearwater or St. Pete Beach first | Depends on the hotel’s parking | At $40 a night, valet can cost more than the car does. The beaches and your cruise. |
| Spending the night downtown or in the Channel District | No | The free TECO streetcar has a Port Tampa Bay station. The night before. |
| Heading somewhere after the cruise | Yes | Crystal River, Sarasota, the Gulf or the parks. After the cruise. |
| Driving your own car in | Skip the rental | Park at the port or off-site. Parking, compared. |
Pick the answer closest to your trip
Where you start carries the most weight; the night before counts next, since a downtown hotel near the terminals makes a car almost pointless.
Farther out, the car pulls ahead
| Starting at | The one-way, all in | Instead of | Better bet |
|---|---|---|---|
| TPA, 9.5 miles | $63 | $35–$40 by the airport’s flat-fare taxi, or about $33 by UberX with the airport fee | The cab |
| St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE), 18 miles | $58 | $85 for Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle’s private vehicle | The car, narrowly |
| Sarasota (SRQ), about 54 miles | $70 | We found no published fare, so ask for a quote | The car |
| A Disney or Universal hotel desk, about 71–78 miles | $63 | The bus for two, about $37 with a taxi at the end, plus a ride to Orlando’s bus station; a private sedan, $600 | The bus on price; the car for families with luggage |
Our arithmetic, not a quote: two travelers and one day at an assumed $45 base rate. At TPA we add its $5.95 facility charge and 11%, our reading of its concession fee; at PIE and SRQ an assumed 10%. Every row carries the $2 state surcharge, the county’s tax and fuel, and the SRQ row adds a $4.95 toll day (Enterprise, Alamo and National’s fee) plus the Skyway toll at the by-plate rate. Fares come from each company’s own page; a taxi marked as an estimate is the airport’s meter rate over our route distance. Illustrative
From PIE the car edges it — about $58 against an $85 van, before the short hop from the desk to the ship. That’s a margin a drop charge could erase — look at your quote.
Sarasota is the clearest yes. We found no published fare for the 54 miles, so the rental is the one price you can look up before you land; anything else takes a quote.
What the kids need, and what fits the bags
A child’s seat requirement doesn’t lapse because the car is rented. Florida law covers children 5 and under, who ride in a crash-tested restraint; through age 3 that’s a separate carrier or integrated seat, and at 4 and 5 a booster works too.
Renting the seat is the pricey route. Avis puts it at “usually” $14 a day with $84 as the most a rental pays, Budget at $14.50 and $87, and Avis bills another $50 when a seat ends its trip at a different branch — a fee that lands on one-ways, not round trips.
American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue each check car seats free, per their own pages.

Enterprise’s published US capacities, bags first because on a cruise trip they’re often what runs out. The full-size SUV’s 3 bags appear to assume all seven seats are in use. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Still wondering about a car in Tampa?
Is a car necessary for a Port Tampa Bay cruise?
Not when you fly into Tampa International, which the airport puts 9.5 miles from the terminals and serves with a flat taxi fare for exactly that ride. A car makes more sense if you fly into Sarasota, start in Orlando, stay on the Gulf beaches, or drive somewhere after the cruise.
Tampa airport to the cruise port: rental car or taxi?
The taxi. The airport lists a $35 to $40 flat fare to the cruise terminal, while a one-day one-way rental works out to about $63 once TPA’s facility charge, a concession fee, Hillsborough’s 7.5% tax and the $2 state surcharge land on an assumed $45 rate.
How do I get from Sarasota airport to the Tampa cruise port?
No fare for the 54-mile trip appears on the airport’s site or the port’s, which is why a one-way rental is usually the practical answer. Our route estimate is about an hour and 13 minutes without traffic. The Skyway costs $1.16 with a transponder, and I-75 north is the toll-free way round.
Can I leave a rental car at the port while I cruise?
You could park it in the port’s garage, but the rental would keep billing for every day at sea, with parking on top. Handing it back before you board and booking a second car after you dock usually costs less, though it’s worth pricing both.
