What will your hotel charge to park the car?
Checking in at a Clearwater Beach resort and staying on the sand? Then the car costs more than it saves: valet there runs about $40 a night, and a taxi out plus a private van to the ship covers both ends. Want Fort De Soto, Honeymoon Island, the Dalí or a second beach? Rent it — and pick a hotel that doesn’t charge resort prices to park.
| Hotel | Beach | What its own site says about parking |
|---|---|---|
| Hilton Clearwater Beach | Clearwater Beach | Valet only, $40 a day |
| Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach | Clearwater Beach | Valet only, $40 plus tax ($42 from Oct 1, 2026), and a $35 resort fee that doesn’t cover it |
| Sandpearl | Clearwater Beach | Valet only, $40 a night plus tax, and a $35 resort fee on top |
| The Don CeSar | St. Pete Beach | Self-park $28 or valet $38 a day, plus tax, and a $40 resort fee on top |
| TradeWinds Island Grand | St. Pete Beach | $25 a night for guests from Oct 5, 2026, pay-by-plate; the $55 resort fee is separate |
| The Luce (formerly Postcard Inn) | St. Pete Beach | Self-park $15 a day |
Parking as each hotel’s own site described it on Sept 28, 2026; where a resort fee appears, parking is billed apart from it. Checked Sept 28, 2026
The split is tidy: Clearwater Beach’s big resorts are valet only at around $40 a night, while St. Pete Beach runs $15 to $28 to park it yourself.
Set on a Clearwater resort anyway? Rent for the single day you want Honeymoon Island or the Dalí, not for the whole stay — a car in valet costs the same whether or not it moves.
The Don CeSar is on our Tampa splurge list, and its own card covers the rest.
A car earns its place if
- You want more than one beach, or a state park
- Your hotel charges $25 a night or less to park
- The beach comes after the cruise, with no deadline
- You’re flying in or out of St. Pete-Clearwater or Sarasota
Go without if
- It’s one Clearwater resort at $40 valet and you’re staying put
- Sail morning is tight and you’d be crossing the bay
- The trolley reaches everywhere you want to go
- You’d be returning the car downtown on a weekend afternoon
At $40 valet the car loses; at St. Pete Beach’s $15 it wins
Two of you, two nights, a TPA pickup. Type your hotel’s parking rate and see which way it tips.
The rental, line by line
Every default here is an assumption you can overwrite, not a quote. Base rate: $45, ours — on Sept 28, 2026, Discover Cars listed TPA cars “from $7” a day, and its help page warns that US prices might not show every tax and surcharge. Type your real rate and any drop charge. Airport charges: TPA’s $5.95 daily facility charge, per its bond filings, plus 11% (our reading of the airport’s concession cap); at PIE or SRQ, 10% is simply our guess. Surcharge and tax: Florida’s $2 a day, then 7.5% in Hillsborough, 7% in Pinellas, Sarasota or Manatee, or 6.5% in Orange, per Florida DOR. Fuel: 30 mpg at $4.37 a gallon, AAA’s Florida figure for Sept 27, 2026. The no-car rows use each operator’s own price, and our taxi figure is the airport’s meter applied to our mileage. The route runs TPA, Clearwater Beach, Terminal 3, roughly 46 miles with no tolls via the Courtney Campbell Causeway; parking sits at $40, the big Clearwater resorts’ valet, until you type your hotel’s, and trolley fares ($2.25) aren’t counted.
At a $40-valet Clearwater resort, two nights come to about $211 with the car, against about $146 for a taxi out and a van to the ship.
The car loses, and not narrowly.
Move to St. Pete Beach and The Luce’s $15 self-park rate, and the answer flips.
The car drops to about $163, while the no-car version from TPA climbs to about $170 on our meter estimate — that beach is further from the airport, so the taxi costs more.
Now the car wins, and it drives you to Fort De Soto as well.
Five beaches, measured from Terminal 3

Our route estimates, from OpenStreetMap routing with no traffic and no stops, so allow for the causeways. Parking is from each city, county or park’s own page, except St. Pete Beach’s meters (local news, since the city’s rate table didn’t load for us) and Anna Maria’s parking debate (local news). Checked Sept 28, 2026
Clearwater sits closest to the airport and the ship. St. Pete Beach is a little further out, with hotels that charge less to park — so Clearwater is the nearer beach, not the cheaper one for a car.
Anna Maria and Siesta Key are another trip entirely. They’re closer to Sarasota’s airport than to the ship, so fly into SRQ and make the beach your first stop.
Sand first, ship first, or no car at all
TPA or PIE, two beach nights, then the ship
Collect at the airport and spend two nights on the Gulf; sail morning is about 45 minutes to the terminal with no traffic. Drop the car downtown if a desk is open (on weekends, noon, or 1 PM at Enterprise on a Saturday), or at TPA.
A taxi out, a van back
The airport’s meter to Clearwater Beach comes to about $61 by our estimate, and the trolleys cover the beach. On sail day, Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle charges $85 for the vehicle from Clearwater or St. Pete.
A downtown desk, then west
Off the ship, a short taxi gets you to the Embassy Suites desk, which opens at 8 even on weekends. Sand by lunch, then fly home from PIE or TPA whenever you’re done.
SRQ, a beach, then one way to Tampa
Anna Maria is 16 miles from SRQ and Siesta Key 12. After that it’s about an hour and a quarter up I-75 or over the Skyway to the ship — SRQ to the ship.
The weekend noon problem
After the cruise
- The ship is back by morning; the rest of the day is yours
- Embassy Suites counter: open from 8, Saturday and Sunday too
- Your flight home is the only deadline
- Fly out of PIE if its fares suit you
- Rent downtown and skip the airport charges
Before the cruise
- A drive back across the bay on sail morning
- Downtown desks close at noon or 1 PM on Saturday; on Sunday only Avis and Budget open, until noon
- Miss that, and the car goes back to TPA while you taxi to the ship
- Check your line’s check-in window first
- Leave slack for the causeways
Sunday is the tight day. The Avis and Budget counter in the Embassy Suites is the one downtown desk open then, and it takes cars only until noon — so a Sunday sail-morning drop has to beat the clock.
After the cruise, none of that applies: your flight sets the clock, not a rental counter.
Free to Clearwater, small change to St. Pete Beach
Clearwater Beach and back is toll-free on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, and the Howard Frankland Bridge’s general lanes cost nothing either — only its new express lanes charge, and they take SunPass only.
The Pinellas Bayway, one way onto St. Pete Beach and the road to Fort De Soto, has plazas at 58¢ and 28¢ with a transponder ($1.08 and 81¢ by plate).
Going out on the Bayway you pass one plaza and coming back another, and Fort De Soto adds the Bunces Pass plaza — a per-trip count from road references rather than FDOT, so treat it as unconfirmed.
From South Pasadena, the Corey Causeway onto the beach is toll-free.
Heading south to Anna Maria or Siesta Key, the Sunshine Skyway costs $1.16 each way on a transponder, or $1.62 by plate.
These are small tolls, not a budget line — but in a rental any one of them can trigger the company’s daily fee, so a transponder from home, with the rental’s plate added, is the cheap fix.
| If you rent from | Their program | What you pay | Terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise, Alamo or National | TollPass, automatic | $4.95 on a toll day, never more than $34.65 a rental; tolls passed on at the video, cash or undiscounted price, whichever costs more | Enterprise group |
| Avis or Budget | e-Toll (e-Toll Unlimited, a different product, bills daily) | $6.95 on a toll day, capped at $34.95 per rental, with tolls at non-discounted rates | Avis and Budget |
| Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty | PlatePass All-Inclusive | $14.99 each rental day with tolls in, weekly maximum unconfirmed; say no to it and a cashless toll still triggers a $9.99 day fee, tolls extra | PlatePass |
| Any company | Your own SunPass (or E-PASS, E-ZPass, SunPass PRO) | Add the plate and dates, delete them afterwards; the Howard Frankland’s express lanes are a SunPass-only road | Turnpike page |
Posted terms as of Sept 27, 2026, identical across Florida pickups. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Getting around on trolleys and vans
| Way | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Beach trolleys | $2.25 a ride; a PSTA day tops out at $5 | The Jolley Trolley on Clearwater Beach, and the Suncoast Beach Trolley every 30 minutes from downtown Clearwater to St. Pete Beach |
| Anna Maria Island trolley | Free | 6 AM to 10:30 PM daily, every 20 minutes, end to end of the island |
| A ferry across the bay | Not running | There’s no ferry across the bay right now. The old Cross-Bay Ferry is gone; PSTA’s new Tampa Bay Ferry, from the Tampa Convention Center to downtown St. Petersburg, says it will launch later in 2026 and hasn’t named a date. Its old website is still up — ignore it |
| Clearwater Ferry | Fare not on its homepage | The Clearwater Ferry links downtown Clearwater, Clearwater Beach and Dunedin, Thursday to Sunday. It doesn’t go to Tampa |
| A bus from Tampa | — | We found no direct bus from downtown Tampa or TPA to Clearwater Beach; PSTA’s Route 300 express runs weekdays to Largo and stops short of the beach |
| Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle | $85 a vehicle | St. Pete or Clearwater to the ship; tolls and fees in, tip not |
Each operator’s own site, except the new ferry’s plans, which come from trade and local press (PSTA hadn’t announced a date by Sept 8, 2026). Checked Sept 28, 2026
Check the storm repairs before you go
After the 2024 hurricanes (Helene and Milton, by local reporting), Pinellas County finished rebuilding its beaches on Feb 11, 2026; the completion date is from the county’s own project page.
Fort De Soto Park is open, $6 a vehicle from 7 AM to sunset — though the far end of the bay pier is still closed for hurricane repairs, and roads are being repaved into early 2027, per the county’s “know before you go” page.
If a spot you’re counting on took damage in 2024, read its own page the week before you travel — a warning beats a fence.
TPA or PIE to downtown Tampa
Put TPA or PIE in the pickup box.
For a before-cruise trip, make downtown Tampa the drop-off and check that desk’s hours for your day; after the cruise, drop at whichever airport you fly home from.
- Pick-up: TPA, or PIE
- Drop-off: downtown Tampa, TPA or PIE
- Drop charge counted in the total
- Cancel at no cost to 48 hrs before pickup
Beach-and-cruise questions
How far is Clearwater Beach from the Tampa cruise port?
By our route estimate, about 25 miles and 42 minutes from Terminal 3 with no traffic, across the toll-free Courtney Campbell Causeway. St. Pete Beach is about 30 miles and 43 minutes.
Do I need a car to stay on Clearwater Beach before a cruise?
Not if you plan to stay put. Valet at the big Clearwater Beach resorts is about $40 a night, the beach trolleys are $2.25 a ride, and Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle charges $85 a vehicle from Clearwater to the ship. A car makes sense once you want the rest of the coast, or your hotel charges less to park.
Is there a ferry from Tampa to St. Petersburg or Clearwater?
Not at the moment. The Cross-Bay Ferry has ended, and PSTA says its new Tampa Bay Ferry, from the Tampa Convention Center to St. Petersburg, will launch later in 2026, with no date given. The Clearwater Ferry doesn’t run to Tampa.
How much does parking cost at Clearwater Beach?
The City of Clearwater lists its beach lots, Pier 60 included, at $3.50 an hour with no time limit, and street meters at $4 an hour with a 5-hour limit.
Are there tolls from Tampa to the beaches?
None to Clearwater Beach over the Courtney Campbell Causeway, or to St. Petersburg in the Howard Frankland’s general lanes. The Pinellas Bayway to St. Pete Beach and Fort De Soto charges 28¢ to 58¢ a plaza with a transponder, and the Sunshine Skyway is $1.16.
Is Fort De Soto open after the hurricanes?
It is. Pinellas County lists the park open at $6 a vehicle, with the far end of the bay pier still closed for repairs and roads being repaved into early 2027.
