About 71 miles, and not one toll from Disney
No Brightline runs to Tampa, and no cruise line we checked sells a ride from MCO to Port Tampa Bay, which leaves a bus from a station, a private car (one company publishes $600 by sedan), or a rental you collect near your hotel. With a family and cruise luggage, the rental wins on everything except the bus fare — and the drive is the easy part.
Rent the one-way if
- There are three or more of you, or luggage to match
- The car seats are traveling with you regardless
- You’re at a Disney or Universal hotel with a rental desk nearby
- You’ll reach Tampa while a drop-off desk is open
Take the bus or a private car if
- It’s one or two of you, packing light, with a ride to the bus station
- No one wants to drive after a week of parks
- You’d reach downtown Tampa on a weekend afternoon with no plan for TPA
- You fly home out of MCO, which means driving it all again
From Disney Springs we make it about 71 miles and 1 hr 23 min; from Universal, about 78 miles; from MCO, about 86 miles and 1 hr 44 min. All three are our route estimates with no traffic; we found no official figure.
I-4 is free all the way to Tampa, and so is the drive from Disney or Universal — no transponder, no toll program, no plate bill.
Start at MCO and S.R. 528 west passes one toll, the Beachline West plaza — $2.24 with a transponder or $2.54 by plate, effective July 1, 2026. The I-4 Express lanes in Orlando are transponder-only and sit east of the route, so you won’t meet them.
Coming into Tampa, Celebrity’s directions take I-4 to Exit 1 at 21st Street, then Adamo Drive and Channelside Drive. The I-4/Selmon Connector is the tolled way into downtown — $1.13 with a transponder, and easy to skip.
Small children along? LEGOLAND Florida, in Winter Haven, is about 55 miles from the terminals by our estimate, with parking from $35.
When the downtown desks close
The three downtown desks we found publish no port shuttle and sit within about a mile of the terminals — and on a weekend, all three close early.
Avis and Budget at the Embassy Suites are the only ones open on Sunday, 8 to noon; Hertz and Enterprise don’t open at all.
After that, TPA’s Rental Car Center takes the car at any hour at Avis and Budget, and the airport’s $35–$40 flat-fare taxi runs you to the ship. Every desk’s hours, side by side.
Ending at a downtown desk is the tidy version of this trip, inside office hours. Try your arrival time above before you book it.
If you’d rather drive on sail morning
An hour and a half on an empty I-4 is a best case, not a promise — I-4 traffic can add a lot to it.
We’d leave the parks by 8 on sail morning, or drive over the afternoon before.
For families we’d pick the afternoon before. Drop the car downtown while the desk is open, walk to dinner in the Channel District, and wake up near the ship — the 20 hotels we’d consider for that night are ranked on getting you to the terminal.
Brightline and the cruise lines both skip this route
| Route | Time | Worth knowing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way rental | Collect it at a Disney or Universal hotel desk, or MCO; hand it back at a downtown Tampa desk or TPA | About 1 hr 23 min from Disney, 1 hr 44 min from MCO, with no traffic (our estimates) | Whether the drop-off desk is open |
| Bus | Greyhound and FlixBus, the same trips: from $13.98, about 1 hour 40 minutes, six a day from 555 N John Young Pkwy in Orlando to 1315 N Marion St in downtown Tampa. Neither stops at MCO | About 1 hour 40 minutes, by the companies’ own figure | First a ride to the Orlando station, then about $9 by taxi to the ship (our estimate) |
| Private car | Detailed Drivers, a private car service, publishes $600 by sedan, $740 by SUV and $1,280 by Sprinter van from MCO to Port Tampa Bay, all in | Door to door | One price for the whole vehicle |
| Train | Brightline’s stations are Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami. There’s no Tampa station, and no date for one | — | No station in Tampa |
| Cruise-line transfer | None of the cruise lines we checked sells one from MCO; Carnival’s Orlando transfers go to Port Canaveral only | — | Not sold from MCO |

Is the bus really cheaper?
| Party size | Rental, one way (hotel desk) | Bus plus taxi | Private car |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $63 Midsize car, $45/day assumed | $37 | $600 |
| 4 | $79 Standard SUV, $60/day assumed | $65 | $740 |
| 6 | $100 7-passenger minivan, $80/day assumed | $102 | $740 |
The car: our assumed base rates, a hotel-desk pickup that avoids airport charges, Orange County’s 6.5% tax on top of Florida’s $2 surcharge, zero tolls from the parks, and fuel for 86 miles at $4.37 and 30 mpg. The bus: the $13.98 “from” fare plus about $9 a taxi from the Tampa station, one cab per four people, which is our estimate from the airport’s published meter rate; the ride to Orlando’s bus station isn’t in it. The private car: Detailed Drivers’ published sedan and SUV prices. Any one-way drop charge comes on top of the rental. Illustrative
On paper, yes — right up until there are six of you.
What the table can’t show is the rest of the bus day: a ride from your hotel to a station on John Young Parkway, bags on and off a coach, then another taxi in Tampa.
Two people with carry-ons won’t mind. A family of four with car seats and cruise luggage will, and the gap in dollars is small.
Try it with your own group
Three things to enter: who’s coming, the rate you were quoted and where you’ll pick up. The rest is filled in.
The rental, line by line
Every number here is a placeholder until you type your own — this is arithmetic, not a quote. We picked $45 a day; Discover Cars’ Tampa airport page read “from $7” a day when we looked on Sept 28, 2026, and it cautions that its US prices can leave out taxes and surcharges, so enter your quoted rate and any one-way drop charge. The airport lines, if you choose one: the $5.95-a-day facility charge at TPA comes out of its bond filings, and 11% is how we read its concession-fee cap; PIE’s and SRQ’s 10% is simply our assumption. The $2-a-day surcharge and county tax rates come from Florida DOR (Hillsborough 7.5%, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee 7%, Orange 6.5%). Gas: $4.37 (AAA’s Florida average for Sept 27, 2026) at 30 mpg. The one toll sits on S.R. 528 west of MCO, the Beachline West plaza, at $2.24 with a transponder or $2.54 by plate (effective July 1, 2026), so set toll days to 1 if you start there; I-4 is free the rest of the way. We used the lowest bus fare the companies advertise, and yours may be higher; every other ride uses the operator’s published price, except the taxi marked “our estimate,” which applies the airport’s published meter rate to our route distance.
Switch the pickup to MCO and the $9-a-day facility charge appears, a reported figure the airport’s own notice no longer confirms.
Then set toll days to one. That’s the Beachline plaza — and, in a rental, the company’s daily toll fee along with it.
$35 a day, before you’ve ridden anything
| Park | What a day’s parking costs |
|---|---|
| Walt Disney World | $35 standard; free for Disney Resort hotel guests |
| Universal Orlando | $35, tax included; free after 6 PM on non-event nights except at Epic Universe |
| LEGOLAND Florida | From $35 plus tax |
| Busch Gardens Tampa Bay | $35 general, $48 preferred — 10 miles from the terminals by our estimate |

Which is why, if your hotel runs buses, we’d skip the car on park days.
Rent on the last morning instead, from your hotel’s desk or Disney’s Car Care Center, and drive straight to Tampa — one rental day, not a week of them.
Disney’s Car Care Center is where Enterprise, Alamo and National share a desk, open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM by Enterprise’s count (Disney says 7 to 7); a free shuttle collects guests, booked 1 or 2 hours ahead depending on whose page you read. We found nothing from Disney or the companies on one-ways from there, so price one before you count on it.
Back from the cruise, on to Orlando
It works just as well in reverse, and it’s easier on the clock.
Ships come back in the morning, and the Embassy Suites desk opens at 8 even on Saturday and Sunday — a short taxi from the terminal, not a trek.
Book the one-way to MCO or a hotel desk; Avis says one-ways to its Universal desks “must be requested at time of booking.” Renting after a Port Tampa Bay cruise covers the pickup.
Search it with the drop-off first
Begin with the drop-off, meaning a downtown desk that’s open when you arrive or TPA, then set MCO or your hotel desk as the pickup.
No rental company posts a Florida one-way fee in advance. Enterprise’s drop charge “varies depending on location and time of year” and appears when you book, Avis says “most locations do not charge a drop-off or one-way fee,” and Hertz decides “on a case-by-case basis.”
- Pick-up: MCO or a hotel desk
- Drop-off: downtown Tampa or TPA
- One-way fee inside the total
- 48 hrs of free cancellation

Tampa from Orlando: what people ask
How far is Orlando from Port Tampa Bay?
Our route estimates put Disney Springs about 71 miles away and MCO about 86, on I-4. With no traffic that’s roughly an hour and 25 minutes, or an hour and 45 from the airport.
Are there tolls from Orlando to the Tampa cruise port?
Zero from Disney or Universal, because I-4 is free all the way. From MCO, S.R. 528 west passes one plaza: $2.24 with a transponder or $2.54 by plate. The I-4/Selmon Connector into downtown is tolled, and optional.
Is there a train from Orlando to Tampa?
No. Brightline’s stations are Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami, and there’s no date for a Tampa one.
Is there a shuttle from Orlando airport to the Tampa cruise port?
No cruise line we checked sells one; Carnival’s Orlando transfers go to Port Canaveral. Private car services do run it (one publishes $600 by sedan), and Greyhound and FlixBus go from Orlando to downtown Tampa from $13.98, though neither stops at MCO.
Where can I return an Orlando rental car for a Tampa cruise?
Downtown, during office hours, at a desk within about a mile of the terminals: Avis and Budget at the Embassy Suites, Hertz at the Marriott Water Street or Enterprise on Nebraska Avenue. Outside those hours, TPA’s Rental Car Center, where Avis and Budget are open 24 hours.
