Same bay, opposite advice
From St. Pete-Clearwater it’s close for two: a one-way car at about $58, against Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle’s $85 van, and a beach night or a pile of luggage is what tips it to the car. From Sarasota there’s nothing to weigh. It’s 54 miles with no published fare we could find — so rent the car, and land the day before.
Rent one way if
- Sarasota is the airport on your ticket
- A night at Clearwater, Siesta Key or Anna Maria comes first
- You’re packing heavy
- You’ll reach a downtown desk while it’s still open
Skip the car if
- It’s two of you going PIE straight to Terminal 3
- You land after the downtown desks have shut
- Nobody in the group wants the wheel on sail day
- The only return you can make is a weekend afternoon
Who prices the ride from Sarasota? Nobody we found
Two travelers, SRQ to a downtown Tampa desk. The ride row is blank on purpose: fill it with whatever quote you get.
Sarasota-Bradenton keeps its counters in baggage claim, with the cars in a covered lot the airport calls “within walking distance of the terminal building.”
Avis and Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar, Alamo and National are all on its list, and Hertz lists its hours there as 8 AM to 11:59 PM.
The counter isn’t the problem — what comes after it is.
We looked for a published fare from SRQ to the cruise terminals — from the airport, from the port, from any company at all — and came up empty. That’s a finding about what’s published, not proof nobody will drive you.
So the car has no published rival here, just a distance. It’s about 54 miles and an hour and 13 minutes with no traffic, by our routing. You can cross the Sunshine Skyway on I-275 or go up I-75, the toll-free way round.
The rental, line by line
Everything above is our math on an assumed rate, not a quote. We start at $45 a day. Discover Cars showed Tampa airport cars “from $7” on Sept 28, 2026 — though the site itself says US prices may exclude some taxes and surcharges.
Type in your quote’s rate, and any one-way charge it lists.
SRQ publishes no rental charges, so we hold 10% for them as a guess. Sarasota and Manatee both tax a rental at 7%, on top of Florida’s $2-a-day surcharge, per Florida DOR.
Hillsborough is 7.5% and Orange 6.5%, if you’re weighing a TPA or Orlando pickup instead.
Toll days start at 1, for a single Skyway crossing; set it to 0 if you’ll take I-75. For gas we assume a 30-mpg car over the 54 miles, with regular at $4.37, the AAA statewide figure from Sept 27, 2026.
With one Skyway crossing and Enterprise, Alamo or National’s $4.95 toll-day fee, two of you land at about $70; stay on I-75 and it’s closer to $63.
If that looks steep, get a quote for a ride and type it into the blank row above. We couldn’t find one to put there.
$85 for the van, about $58 for the car
Two of you, PIE to a downtown Tampa desk. Put your own quote in place of ours.
PIE puts its rental counters in Bag Claim: Alamo and National, Avis and Budget from 6:30 AM to 11 PM, and Enterprise from 6 AM to 11 PM, every day.
The airport says they stay open “30 minutes after the last arriving flight.” Hertz isn’t on its list.
Then it’s 18 miles and about 28 minutes with no traffic (our route estimate), across the Howard Frankland Bridge. Its general lanes are free — the new express lanes beside them have been tolled since Aug 22, 2026, SunPass only, and FDOT doesn’t post the rate.
Picking up in Pinellas also shaves the tax — 7%, half a point under Hillsborough.
The rental, line by line
Our $45 is the same placeholder the Sarasota calculator uses, and this is arithmetic, not a quote; Discover Cars showed Tampa airport cars “from $7” on Sept 28, 2026, and says US prices may exclude some taxes. Your quote beats our guess, so type its rate and any drop charge over ours.
PIE doesn’t publish its rental charges either, so that 10% is ours, not the airport’s. The tax line is Pinellas County’s 7% plus the state’s $2 a day.
At TPA, for comparison, the airport’s bond filings show a $5.95-a-day facility charge, and 11% is how we read its cap on the concession fee. Gas is 18 miles in a 30-mpg car at that same $4.37 (AAA, Sept 27, 2026), and the van’s $85 is the operator’s own published price.
For two, it’s about $58 by car against $85 for the van, which covers its own tolls and fees but not the tip. That’s close.
The gap is real but modest — and the van drops you at the ship, not at a downtown desk a mile away.
Where the car pulls clearly ahead is a night at Clearwater Beach on the way — or more luggage than you’d want to wrestle into someone else’s vehicle.
Both airports sit nearer the beach than the terminal
| Airport | Beach | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| PIE | Clearwater Beach | 12 miles, about 24 min |
| PIE | St. Pete Beach | 20 miles, about 31 min |
| SRQ | Siesta Key | 12 miles, about 27 min |
| SRQ | Anna Maria Island (Holmes Beach) | 16 miles, about 34 min |
Miles and minutes are ours: OpenStreetMap’s router, empty roads, nowhere to stop. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Put those next to the 18 and 54 miles to Terminal 3, and the argument for these airports changes shape. They’re beach airports that happen to sit near a cruise port — not the other way round.
Clearwater Beach is closer to PIE than the ship is, and Siesta Key is a short hop from SRQ.
A night on the Gulf, then the one-way to Tampa: that’s the version of this trip we’d actually book.
Sarasota County counts 950 spaces at Siesta Beach that cost nothing, usable 6 AM to 10 PM. Anna Maria Island runs a free trolley end to end every 20 minutes, 6 AM to 10:30 PM, seven days a week.
Hotels, parking and the Pinellas beaches are on our Gulf beaches page.
Get the car downtown before the desks close
Choose a day, then your best guess at the hour you’ll roll into downtown Tampa.
Downtown Tampa has three rental desks we could confirm, all within about a mile of the terminals. All three keep short weekend hours.
Avis and Budget’s counter at the Embassy Suites is the one that opens on Sunday at all — from 8 AM to noon.
Miss them and the fallback is TPA, where Avis and Budget take cars around the clock, then the airport’s $35–$40 flat-fare taxi to the ship. Each desk’s hours are in our Tampa rental guide.
From PIE, half an hour at the wheel leaves room for a sail-morning landing, as long as the flight’s on time.
From SRQ we wouldn’t try it. An hour and a quarter on a good day, plus downtown desks that shut by noon or 1 PM on weekends, is too little slack — fly in the day before.
For that night, we rank 20 hotels by how painless the sail-morning trip to the port is. Every other way out of these airports is on our nearest-airports page for Port Tampa Bay.
If Sarasota’s route takes you over the Skyway
Only the Sarasota drive meets a toll, and only on I-275: the Sunshine Skyway, $1.16 with a transponder and $1.62 by plate, cashless since April 12, 2026 and charged in each direction. From PIE, the Howard Frankland’s general lanes cost nothing.
In a rental, the toll is the cheap part.
One crossing switches on the company’s toll-day fee, several times the toll itself. Your own SunPass or E-ZPass, with the rental’s plate added for the day, sidesteps it.
| If your car comes with | What it does to a toll day | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise, Alamo, National TollPass | Turns on by itself at the first toll. Each toll day costs $4.95, never more than $34.65 in one rental, and the toll itself is charged at the top of its video, cash and undiscounted prices. | National’s terms |
| Avis or Budget e-Toll | Each toll day costs $6.95, capped at $34.95 per rental, and the tolls are passed on at non-discounted rates. e-Toll Unlimited is another product entirely, charged for every day you have the car. | Budget’s terms |
| PlatePass All-Inclusive (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty) | Tolls included, but at $14.99 for each Florida rental day whether you drive a toll road or not; there’s a weekly maximum we weren’t able to confirm. If you say no but a cashless gantry catches you anyway, PlatePass charges $9.99 for that toll day, tolls on top. | PlatePass’s terms |
| Your own transponder | Bring an E-ZPass, an E-PASS or any SunPass, PRO included, and add the rental’s plate and dates to the account; delete them when you’re home. Only SunPass works in the express lanes on the new Howard Frankland. | Florida’s Turnpike |
Checked against the rental companies’ toll terms on Sept 27, 2026. They’re statewide, so SRQ and PIE get the same deal as TPA. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Seven percent at both airports, and what TPA adds
| Charge | Amount | Where it comes from | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida rental surcharge | $2.00 a day for up to 30 days | A state statute, with sales tax charged on it as well | Verified |
| Pinellas County (PIE) | 7% | 6% state plus 1% county | Verified |
| Sarasota or Manatee County (SRQ) | 7% | The same 6% plus 1% in either county | Verified |
| Hillsborough (TPA, downtown Tampa) | 7.5% | 6% plus 1.5% of county surtax, built from three half-cents; one of them runs out at the end of 2028 | Verified |
| PIE or SRQ airport charges | Not published | Neither airport lists them; our calculators hold 10% as a placeholder | Our assumption |
| TPA facility charge | $5.95 a rental day | From its bond disclosures, the newest dated August 2025, which say “no current plans for rate adjustments” | Bond filing, 2025 |
| TPA concession fee | About 11%, our reading | The airport’s agreement caps it at 10% of gross receipts, roughly 11% on top of the base rate — our arithmetic, since no company page we read prints it | Our arithmetic |
| Vehicle licence and similar fees | Set by each company | None publishes a figure | Not published |

What to type into the search
Put PIE or SRQ in as the pickup and a downtown Tampa desk or TPA as the return. Then find the one-way charge in the total — before you look at anything else.
No rental company publishes a Florida drop fee to check it against.
Enterprise’s own wording is that the charge “varies depending on location and time of year.” Avis’s line is that “most locations do not charge a drop-off or one-way fee,” and Hertz says it’s decided “on a case-by-case basis.”
Read the total, not the daily rate.
- Pick-up: PIE, or SRQ
- Return: downtown Tampa or TPA
- Drop charge included in the price
- Cancel free until 48 hours out
Flying into PIE or SRQ: what people ask
How far is St. Pete-Clearwater airport from the Tampa cruise port?
Eighteen miles to Terminal 3 by our routing, about 28 minutes if the roads are empty, and toll-free as long as you stay in the Howard Frankland Bridge’s general lanes.
How far is Sarasota airport from Port Tampa Bay?
Roughly 54 miles and an hour and 13 minutes without traffic, as we route it. I-275 over the Sunshine Skyway costs $1.16 with a transponder or $1.62 by plate; I-75 gets you there with no toll.
Is there a shuttle from St. Pete-Clearwater airport to the cruise port?
One private operator, Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle, publishes $85 a vehicle from St. Pete or Clearwater, with tolls and fees included and the tip left to you. We didn’t find a PIE transfer sold by any cruise line we checked.
Which rental companies are at St. Pete-Clearwater airport?
Alamo and National, Avis and Budget (6:30 AM to 11 PM), and Enterprise (6 AM to 11 PM), at counters in Bag Claim that the airport says stay open 30 minutes past the last arriving flight. Hertz isn’t listed.
What’s the sales tax on a rental car at PIE or SRQ?
Seven percent at either: Pinellas County at PIE, Sarasota or Manatee at SRQ, with Florida’s $2-a-day rental surcharge on top. Neither airport publishes its own rental charges, so look for those on your quote.
