Fly into Tampa. The airport puts the cruise port 9.5 miles away, the port calls it a 15-minute drive, and 22 airlines flew 24.8 million passengers through it in 2025.
St. Pete-Clearwater is Allegiant’s airport, across the bay. Uber puts it 17 miles and 26 minutes from Tampa, and no official source states a distance to the port. Sarasota-Bradenton is across the Skyway, and nobody official measures it to the terminals at all. Fly either of those for the fare, and fly in the day before.
Pick TPA if
- You want a 15-minute ride to the ship
- You might land on sail morning
- You want a free hotel ride: eight of our top twenty give you one from TPA
Pick PIE if
- Allegiant flies from your city and TPA doesn’t
- The fare beats Tampa by more than a cab ride
- You’re landing the day before
Pick SRQ if
- You’re starting from Sarasota or Bradenton anyway
- You’re flying in at least a day early
One airport up the interstate, one across the bay
From TPA it’s I-275 toward downtown, then I-4 to Exit 1 at 21st Street, south to Adamo Drive and left onto Channelside Drive, per Celebrity’s directions. Terminal 2 is 651 Channelside, Terminal 3 is 815, and Terminal 6 is 1333 McKay Street. Your cruise documents name yours.

What the ride to the ship costs
Pick your airport and how many of you are riding. A taxi is one price for the car, Carnival’s transfer charges per person, and the private operators charge by the vehicle, so the cheapest answer changes with your party.
| Taxi, the airport’s flat rate (higher page) | — |
| Uber’s own UberX estimate, plus the $5 airport fee | — |
| Carnival transfer, Carnival guests only | — |
| Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle, private vehicle | — |
| SuperShuttle on Viator, per group | — |
| Uber’s UberX estimate to Tampa (not the port) | — |
| Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle, private, from St. Pete or Clearwater | — |
One way, before tip unless noted, as each company published it on September 25, 2026. The airport’s taxi figure is a flat rate for the car; its two pages say $40 and $35, and we show the higher. Uber’s figures are its own route-page estimates, not guaranteed fares, with the airport’s $5 rideshare fee added. Tampa Cruise Ship Shuttle’s prices include tolls and airport and port fees. The Viator SuperShuttle listing is priced per group. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian sell transfers by phone without a published price, and Celebrity’s Tampa transfer page says it’s no longer available. Sarasota has no published fares to the port.
Heading home after the cruise? Uber’s estimate from the port back to TPA is about $24 and 18 minutes, and Carnival’s transfer is $24.99 a person for its guests. Carnival also says not to book a return flight earlier than noon.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
No cruise line we read publishes a landing guideline for Tampa, so the useful yardsticks are Carnival’s noon cut-off for its transfer, Margaritaville’s 2:30 PM terminal-door closing, and our own rule of thumb, labelled as ours. Enter your landing time and the departure time from your cruise documents.
- Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsYour flight must land by 12:00 PM to ride Carnival’s $24.99 transfer, which runs 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.—
- Margaritaville at Sea, Terminal 6The terminal opens at 9:30 AM and the doors close at 2:30 PM, per the line. Land by 1:30 PM and you still have the ride and the check-in line ahead of you.—
- Taxi or rideshare, any lineNo cut-off of its own. The port calls it a 15-minute drive. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 2 hours before the ship leaves, and treat your line’s check-in window as the real deadline.—
- Private car or vanTampa Cruise Ship Shuttle charges $70 for the vehicle; SuperShuttle lists $125 per group on Viator. Neither publishes a landing cut-off.—
- Taxi, rideshare or private carNo published cut-off, and no official distance to the port. Uber says 26 minutes to Tampa; allow an hour to the terminal. Our rule of thumb: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves.—
- Private car or car serviceNo published guideline and no official distance to Port Tampa Bay. Fly in the day before.—
Whatever the ride, your cruise line’s check-in window is the real deadline. It’s printed in your boarding documents. A delayed flight eats into it fast — which is the whole case for flying in the day before.

The morning you’re back
Ships clear early, flights leave late, and the gap in between is the part nobody plans. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait, and what to do with the bags.
Partner links (transfers, rental cars, luggage storage) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
Can you get to the port without a car?
Not from the airport. Tampa has no rail link to TPA, and the airport’s SkyConnect people-mover only runs between the main terminal, the economy garage and the Rental Car Center, 24 hours a day and under five minutes end to end. HART city buses stop at the Rental Car Center; the airport’s pages name no route to the port, and the port names none.
Once you’re downtown it’s a different story. The port says restaurants, shops and breweries sit within walking distance of all three cruise terminals, and Hilton puts its Channel District hotels half a mile from the ship. The TECO streetcar runs through the Channel District and Ybor City; the hotels themselves don’t publish it, so we don’t score it, but it’s there.
Bags: the port says there’s nowhere to store them for early arrivals, and that the Florida Aquarium next to Terminal 2 will hold luggage free with a discounted admission ticket.
Flying in the day before
The day-before flight is the one move that takes sail-day timing off the table. In Tampa it buys you something the other Florida ports can’t: a hotel you can walk from to the ship. It costs a hotel night. It buys you the morning.
Eight of our top twenty give you a free ride from TPA, and all of them are by the airport, a 15-minute drive from the terminals by the port’s count. None of them publishes a ride to the ship in the morning, so that leg is a cab. Or stay in the Channel District and skip the cab.

Port Tampa Bay airport FAQ
What is the closest airport to Port Tampa Bay?
Tampa International (TPA). The airport puts the cruise port 9.5 miles away, the port calls it a 15-minute drive from the Channelside District, and Uber's route page says 9 miles and 24 minutes. Celebrity's directions say 10 miles. It's the only airport with a real claim on this port.
Should I fly into Tampa or St. Pete-Clearwater for a cruise?
Tampa, unless Allegiant flies from your city and TPA doesn't. St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) is Allegiant's airport, with Sun Country to Minneapolis and BermudAir to a few islands, and it sits across the bay: Uber puts it 17 miles and 26 minutes from Tampa, and no official source gives a distance to the port. Fly PIE for the fare, and fly in the day before.
How much is a taxi from TPA to the cruise port?
The airport's own pages disagree with each other: its ground-transportation page says a flat $40 to downtown Tampa and the cruise terminal, and its arriving-passenger guide says the maximum is $35. The meter otherwise runs $3.50 for the first fifth of a mile and $2.85 a mile, with a $22 minimum from the airport. Uber's own estimate is about $28 for UberX, plus the airport's $5 rideshare fee.
Does Carnival run a transfer from Tampa airport?
Yes. Carnival's Tampa transfer starts at $24.99 a person, runs between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM on sail day, and your flight must land by noon to use it. Meet the representative at baggage claim on the Red or Blue side by the elevators. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian sell transfers by phone without a published Tampa price, and Celebrity's Tampa transfer page says the product is no longer available.
Can I fly in on the morning of my cruise?
Into TPA, people do, because it's close. No cruise line we read publishes a landing guideline for Tampa the way Princess does for Fort Lauderdale, so the yardsticks are Carnival's noon cut-off for its transfer and Margaritaville's 2:30 PM terminal-door closing. Your line's check-in window is the real deadline. A delayed flight eats it fast, which is the whole case for the day before.
Is there a train or bus from the airport to the port?
No train. The airport's SkyConnect people-mover runs 24 hours between the main terminal, the economy garage and the rental car center, in under five minutes, but it doesn't leave the airport. HART city buses stop at the rental car center; there's no direct route to the terminals we could find on the airport's pages, and the port publishes none.
Can I fly home the same morning I get off the ship?
Carnival says not to book a return flight earlier than noon on debarkation day if you're riding its transfer. Uber's estimate from the port back to TPA is about $24 and 18 minutes, so the ride isn't the problem; the walk-off queue is. The Coming Home tool on this page works the gap out for your flight.
