Copenhagen Airport to the Cruise Port: Rent at Kastrup or Ride to Nordhavn?

The rental counters at Copenhagen Airport aren’t in the terminal — they’re in a Car Rental Centre at the western end, a free bus ride away. From there Oceankaj is 9.3 road miles, about 25 minutes on empty roads by our routing, and the car has nowhere to go once you reach the ship. Below, a calculator puts a Kastrup car against the cab, the metro and the transfers, then the fees a Danish counter can add.

Rental Centre

Kastrup’s Car Rental Centre, and the booking site that says otherwise

Kastrup is where the cruise lines’ own directions start. Its rental cars aren’t in the terminal.

Where the cars are

Copenhagen Airport puts its car hire in the Car Rental Centre at the western end of the airport, reached by free terminal buses; returns go to the Car Rental Return area directly opposite. Plan on a bus ride between baggage claim and the car, not a walk across the arrivals hall. The buses are free.

Europcar’s page says its bus leaves Terminal 3 every 15 minutes and reaches the office in under five — the only timings we found printed.

Discover Cars tells its customers the desks are in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall. Neither the airport nor Europcar says so, and we go with the airport.

Sixt is the exception. Its page sends you from the arrivals hall toward the Clarion Hotel, where a free Sixt shuttle runs about 1.5 km to its branch at Terminal 1, P1. The other desks are in the Car Rental Centre.

Ten brands show up in Discover Cars’ airport results, Hertz and Budget among them. Hours and return rules for the four we could read are on the hub’s desk cards.

Allow for the bus at both ends — on the way back too, when the clock is running against a flight.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Our arithmetic in Danish kroner; your booking screen has the real total. The DKK 300 base rate is our assumption: Discover Cars’ Copenhagen Airport page averaged $45 a day on Oct 3, 2026, about DKK 300 at the ECB rate, and it didn’t say what that $45 includes. We assume the quote already includes Denmark’s 25% VAT; if it says “ekskl. moms”, add 25%. No brand prints an airport surcharge we could read, so that box starts at 0%. We couldn’t read an official fuel price for Oct 2026; enter what you see at the pump, per litre, and the fuel line converts it at 3.785 litres a US gallon and 30 mpg. We found no Danish child-seat price, so the seat stepper adds nothing; type the seat charge into the coverage box. Quay parking is P-plads Oceanvej’s DKK 150 daily cap, one day per rental day; set it to zero if you return the car before boarding.

The defaults: two people, one day at our assumed DKK 300 (about US$45), nine miles to the quay and one day of quay parking at the DKK 150 cap.

That’s DKK 450 before fuel, about US$70 — against about DKK 425 for a weekday daytime cab and DKK 60 for two on the metro and bus, our arithmetic.

The car loses on a straight transfer — narrowly to a daytime cab, and by a long way to the metro.

Raise the days to your cruise length and the parking line grows with it — that’s the real cost of keeping the car, not the rate.

It only starts to win if you’ll tour for days first and hand the car back in town. Even then you still need the ride to Nordhavn — about DKK 212 by cab from Central Station by day.

Type your own quote, and the comparison redraws.

    The drive

How far Oceankaj, Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod are from the airport

The quays are close as airports go. The traffic through the city is what stretches the time.

From the Rental Centre to Oceankaj our routing gives 9.3 miles (15.0 km), about 25 minutes with no traffic.

Royal Caribbean puts the airport about 10 miles and 25 minutes from the Ocean berths. Norwegian says about 15.5 km and 20 minutes.

Wonderful Copenhagen’s taxi estimate for the same trip is a good deal longer — plan on that figure for a busy morning, not the empty-road one.

The two smaller quays are nearer. From the airport, Langelinie is 7.0 miles and about 19 minutes, and Nordre Toldbod 6.1 miles and 16 minutes, our routing.

Near those two, parking runs DKK 335 to 500 a day, per Wonderful Copenhagen, so a car has nowhere cheap to wait.

Drop the bags and a passenger at the terminal first, then deal with the car.

From the EU’s VAT table, Europcar Denmark’s terms and Discover Cars’ partner pages, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026

Denmark’s standard VAT is 25%. We assume an EU rental quote shows it already, so our calculator adds none; if yours says “ekskl. moms”, add 25%.

Europcar’s Danish terms say a surcharge “can” be added for an airport pick-up, without an amount. Alamo’s listing on Discover Cars says the airport surcharge is included in the rate. That’s why our calculator starts the surcharge at 0% — a blank, not a guess.

Europcar Denmark reserves a DKK 2,500 deposit on a credit card, and the same card pays the rental; its pages say nothing about debit cards. In dollars, the hold is about US$375, our conversion.

Discover Cars shows a collision-damage excess of about €2,010 for Europcar, Keddy and Alamo at CPH — about US$2,255 before any cover you buy, per that reseller.

Sixt’s minimum age is 20, and it warns that some classes ask for more and an underage fee may apply. Europcar charges a young-driver fee under 26, sets the minimum between 20 and 26 by car class and wants a licence held a year. Alamo charges under 25.

Europcar hands cars over full and charges a refuelling fee if one comes back short. Top up in the last few miles before Kastrup and the fee never applies.

Bring a credit card in the driver’s name, with room on it for the hold.

    Automatics

Automatic cars at Kastrup, and the size you need for cruise bags

We can’t tell you how many automatics Copenhagen’s desks keep. We can tell you how to avoid a surprise.

None of the brand pages we read says how many automatics it keeps in Copenhagen or what one costs.

So book the automatic explicitly, and read the class on the voucher before you pay — a manual at the counter is a hard way to learn.

Size matters as much — cruise luggage fills a small car fast, and the table below is the US yardstick.
