Six miles is a ride, not a rental
If HNL to the ship is the whole plan, don’t rent. A cab is roughly $32 on our arithmetic, Roberts Hawaii $29 a person, and the car about $61 for one day — and it still has to go back to a desk before you board.
Collect at HNL if
- Pearl Harbor fills the day before you sail
- You land days early and want the North Shore or the east side
- You’ll return it at HNL anyway, after a Waikiki stay
Ride instead if
- The airport and the pier are the whole day
- The return would land on a weekday-only desk on a weekend
- There are four of you and one cab fare covers everyone
One HNL day against a shuttle seat and a meter
Two of you, one rental day from HNL. Type your quote, and your app fare into the last row.
The rental, line by line
The $41 base is Discover Cars’ “from” rate for HNL, updated Oct 1, 2026 — a search result, so type yours. Oahu’s 4.712% general excise tax and the $7.50-a-day state surcharge are in, as the hub lists them. HNL’s $4.50 daily facility charge is from the airport’s own page; the 11% concession fee is our assumption, since no primary page states it. Fuel is 6 miles at AAA’s Honolulu average, $5.55 on Oct 1, 2026. A car returned at a town desk rather than HNL may count as a different return location, so any charge for that goes in the drop box.
At $41 the car comes to about $61 for the day on our assumptions, fuel included.
Two Roberts seats are $58.
The cab on the proposed meter is about $32 for the whole car, not per head — at three or four people it wins on paper, if the bags fit.
The rental’s real cost isn’t on the receipt. You’d still have to hand the car back before boarding, and we found no desk at either pier.
The nearest, Ala Moana, shuts on weekends — the hub’s desk cards show who’s open the day you sail.
Across the road from Terminal 2: the five-story garage
Collecting at HNL is a walk from Terminal 2 and a shuttle from Terminal 1. Nothing about it is cruise-specific.
The Rental Car Center is a five-story building across from Terminal 2, a short walk from its baggage claim; a shuttle runs from Terminal 1.
National’s page gives the walk: follow the blue Rental Car Facility signs and cross at baggage claim crosswalk 26 or 31.
The brands inside are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National, per the state’s 2021 announcement; Sixt’s own page puts it there too.
Counter hours differ by brand — Avis 5 AM–1 AM; Hertz 5:30 AM–midnight; Enterprise 5 AM–11 PM; Sixt 6 AM–11 PM, per each company’s page.
Landing after 1 AM? None of the four counters whose hours we read opens before 5, so book the pick-up for 5 AM or later.
Enterprise’s returns go to the first floor of the facility, per its airport page, and Avis lists 24-hour drop-off.
The center sits about 6.6 miles from Pier 2 by our routing estimate, 5.7 going the other way — about a quarter-hour with no traffic, and a lot more at rush hour.
“From $41” is a Nissan Versa, not your minivan
A “from” price is the cheapest car on the cheapest day the search found. Yours will differ.
Discover Cars showed Honolulu and HNL “from $41” a day (a Nissan Versa through Sixt at $40.79), updated Oct 1, 2026.
That’s the floor of a search, not the price of your trip.
A cruise family rarely fits a Versa, and the hub’s class table shows why — Enterprise lists a midsize car at three suitcases.
At $41, one HNL day comes to about $60 once the airport and state charges land, our arithmetic before fuel. A week at the same rate is about $419, against $287 of base rate.
Roughly a third of that week is charges, not car. Read totals with the fees in, never the headline.
Deposits and Discover Cars’ Full Coverage are the other lines that move, and our Discover Cars review walks through them.
What collecting at the airport adds, day by day
Two lines separate an HNL quote from a town one. One is published, and one isn’t.
The airport charges $4.50 a rental day, which paid for the center. A consultant’s survey lists it per day with no cap, so a two-week rental carries $63 of it.
No primary page states HNL’s concession fee; a travel guide puts it near 11.11%, and we use 11. Treat that 11% as a placeholder, not a published rate — your quote’s own line replaces it.
| Rental length | HNL Rental Car Center | A town desk | The airport adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $60 | $50 | $9 |
| 3 days | $180 | $151 | $28 |
| 7 days | $419 | $353 | $66 |
| 14 days | $838 | $706 | $132 |
At an assumed $41 a day, with Oahu’s 4.712% tax and $7.50 surcharge on both, plus HNL’s $4.50 a day and an assumed 11% concession fee. Fuel left out. Illustrative
Over a week that’s about $66 more at the airport on these assumptions. What it buys is hours — the town desks close by 5 on weekdays, and earlier in Waikiki.
The state lines are identical in town and at HNL; the hub’s tax table sets them out with their sources.
When the flight or the ship runs behind the contract
A late return at HNL isn’t free, and the clock starts sooner than you’d think.
Hertz at HNL can charge part or all of an extra day after 30 minutes late, and $12 a day over 12 hours, up to $60, per its HNL page.
That bites hardest on the way home — a car due back at a set hour and a disembarkation that runs long.
Book the return with an hour or two of slack — an extra day costs less than a missed flight.
We read Hertz’s late rules only. The other brands in the building publish their own, which we didn’t check, so ask at the counter.
Shuttle, meter, bus or app from baggage claim
Without a car, we looked at five ways from the bags to the pier. Two publish a price.
| Ride | Cost | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Roberts Hawaii shared ride | $29 a person to the pier; $26 back | Two standard bags included, per its Norwegian page |
| A taxi | About $32, our arithmetic | On the city’s proposed meter for 5.7 miles, before bags and tip; we couldn’t confirm it’s in force |
| TheBus W Line | $3 a person on HOLO | No timetable stop at either pier; one medium suitcase plus a carry-on |
| SpeediShuttle | No fare shown | The airport lists its pick-up at baggage claim 31; its site showed no fare to us |
| Uber or Lyft | No published fare | Type the app’s quote into the calculator above |
From Roberts Hawaii, TheBus, the airport’s ground-transportation pages and the city’s proposed taxi rules, read Oct 2, 2026; the cab is our arithmetic, not a fare. Mixed; see notes
The calculator above carries four of these. The decision page has the meter’s workings and the bus’s luggage rule in full.
Skyline’s airport station is Lelepaua, between the International and Terminal 2 garages; the rail doesn’t reach downtown or the piers yet — so it won’t help on sail day.
Price HNL for the days the car actually drives
If a car belongs in the trip at all, it’s usually for the days around the cruise, not the ride to it.
Search HNL for those dates, then a town desk, and compare totals with the airport’s charges in. The after-cruise page covers collecting on the day you dock.
- Pick-up: HNL Rental Car Center
- Drop-off: HNL or a Honolulu desk
- Taxes and fees itemised before you pay
- Free cancellation until 48 hrs out
