Renting a Car After a Honolulu Cruise: Which Desk Is Open the Morning You Dock

You walk off at Pier 2 with every bag you own, and we found no rental desk waiting. Every Waikiki hotel desk we read closes by 4 PM, Sixt at 2 and three Enterprise desks at noon, and the closest desk to the ship shuts on weekends. HNL’s counters open from 5 AM, and Avis there lists 24-hour drop-off. Pick the desk by the day you dock, not by the price.

Before you book

Your ship docks at Pier 2, or at Pier 11, the alternate terminal, and the town desks keep mostly morning hours. Waikiki’s hotel desks all close between noon and 4 PM. Enterprise Ala Moana, the nearest desk to the pier by our estimate, is shut Saturday and Sunday. HNL keeps the longest hours, the ones that forgive a slow disembark.

From each company’s own location page, read Oct 2, 2026, with distances as our route estimates; the hub carries every desk with its return rules. Checked Oct 2, 2026

We found no published disembark time for Pier 2 — your line’s last-morning schedule sets it, so read that before the rental.

A weekend arrival narrows the list fast — Discovery Bay gives you until noon, North Nimitz until 2.

Waikiki’s desks open early enough, but you’d reach them by cab with the luggage, about 3.4 miles across town by our estimate.

Want to see who’s open at the minute you’ll arrive? The hub’s hours checker takes a day and a time.

Out at the airport

HNL’s counters forgive a late disembark, at a price

The airport is the one place on our list where an evening arrival still finds a counter open.

From Avis, Hertz, Enterprise and Sixt’s HNL pages and the state airport page, read Oct 2, 2026. Checked Oct 2, 2026

The Rental Car Center is about 6.6 miles from Pier 2 by our estimate, roughly 18 minutes with no traffic.

Avis’s 24-hour drop-off is the line that matters for a red-eye home — you can drop the car whenever your flight allows.

The airport adds a $4.50-a-day facility charge and, we assume, an 11% concession fee — the airport page breaks those down.

Going straight from the ship to a flight? Then you need a ride, not a rental.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

A sketch, not a quote: the $50 base is our assumption, so type what you’re offered. Fuel covers about 132 miles, our rough total for Pearl Harbor, the east side and the North Shore loop, at 30 mpg and $5.55 a gallon. Oahu’s excise tax and the state’s $7.50-a-day surcharge are in. HNL adds $4.50 a day and an assumed 11% fee; a town desk adds neither. Park fees and hotel parking aren’t in, because they depend on your plan.

At an assumed $50 a day, four days from HNL with that much driving come to about $306, our arithmetic. Collect the same car in town and it’s about $264.

So the airport costs roughly $42 more over four days — the price of a counter that’s open when you get there.

Each island day has its own booking window, and the island-day page lines them up.

    Into the new year

Holiday sailings meet a higher surcharge from Jan 1, 2027

A small change that reaches every rental from Jan 1, 2027 — and muddles the ones that straddle the date.

Oahu passes on a 4.712% general excise tax (4% state plus Honolulu’s 0.5% surcharge, through 2030), and the state adds a rental surcharge of $7.50 a day in 2026, rising to $8 on Jan 1, 2027 under the statute.

    That’s 50 cents a day, not a new fee, so a week goes from $52.50 at $7.50 to $56.00 at $8.

We couldn’t read how a rental that runs from December into January is charged — every day at the new rate, or only the days after the 1st. The gap is a few dollars either way.

Check the surcharge line on your quote if the trip crosses the new year.

The bigger January number is the airport’s, not the state’s. The $4.50 facility charge and an assumed 11% concession fee outweigh the half-dollar rise on any HNL pick-up, by our arithmetic.
    Fuel

Oahu’s pump price, drive by drive

Oahu’s distances are short, so the pump matters less here than the parking does.

Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay25 mi$5

    All three island days132 mi$24

Our arithmetic at $5.55 a gallon, AAA’s Honolulu average for regular on Oct 1, 2026; distances are our no-traffic route estimates. Our arithmetic

AAA had Honolulu’s regular at $5.55 on Oct 1, 2026, and the state average at $5.62 — about 19 cents a mile at 30 mpg, by our arithmetic.

Oahu is small, so fuel stays modest — the whole island list costs about $24 at that mileage. A minivan for seven drinks more, so lower the mpg in the calculator if that’s your car.

We didn’t read any company’s refueling charge for Honolulu — return the car full and you won’t need to know it.

A Waikiki hotel bills the car by the night, a cost, not a convenience — the night-before page lists each rate.

    FAQ

    The morning you dock, answered

No. Its page lists Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5 PM, with no after-hours returns and no pick-up service. It’s about 1.4 miles from Pier 2 by our estimate.

Can you return a rental car at Honolulu airport after hours?

Avis lists 24-hour drop-off at the HNL Rental Car Center, and Enterprise’s page describes an after-hours key drop in its return lane. Hertz is open 5:30 AM to midnight.

Is Hawaii’s rental car surcharge going up in 2027?

Yes. The state surcharge is $7.50 a rental day in 2026 and rises to $8 on Jan 1, 2027, under the statute. That’s 50 cents a day.

How much is gas in Honolulu?

AAA’s Honolulu average for regular was $5.55 a gallon on Oct 1, 2026, and the Hawaii average $5.62. The North Shore loop, about 90 miles by our estimate, uses roughly $17 at 30 mpg.
