Nearest Airport to the Honolulu Cruise Port

Fly into HNL — the state runs Oahu’s other big field, Kalaeloa, as a general-aviation reliever, not an airline airport. Royal Caribbean puts HNL about 6 miles and 30 minutes from Pier 2, and The Points Guy puts the cab at about $40. Below, the bus, the shuttles and the cab priced side by side, and a check on your landing time.

The short answer

Your flight lands at Daniel K. Inouye International, on the shore west of downtown. It’s about 6 miles to Pier 2 — 30 minutes by Royal Caribbean’s count — and a cab runs about $40.

The drive estimates run from 10 minutes to 40, depending on whose page you read and on Nimitz Highway’s traffic. With cruise luggage, it’s a cab or a transfer — TheBus costs $3.25, but its one-suitcase rule rules out most cruise bags. Land the day before if you can: the ride is short, the traffic isn’t predictable.

Take a cab or a transfer if

  • Your bags won’t fit under a bus seat
  • Three or four of you can split one $40 meter
  • The ship sails the afternoon you land

Take TheBus if

  • One medium suitcase and a carry-on each is all you packed
  • Your hotel the night before is on the W Line, downtown or in Waikiki
  • $3.25 beats $40 and you have the time

The Map

One airport, west of the harbor

HNL sits on the shore west of downtown. Nimitz Highway runs east past the harbor and becomes Ala Moana Boulevard, and Pier 2 is off Channel Street, across from Restaurant Row, per Royal Caribbean. Pier 11, the alternate terminal, is at Aloha Tower; The Points Guy puts the two piers about half a mile apart.

The Ride

What the ride to the ship costs

Change the head count and watch the order flip — the $40 cab is per car, while the $29 transfer and the $3.25 bus are per person.

Travelers
Taxi to Pier 2, The Points Guy’s estimate—
Roberts Hawaii shared transfer to the pier—
TheBus W Line, cash fare—

One way, in US dollars, before tip. The cab is The Points Guy’s estimate; Honolulu cabs run on the meter. Roberts Hawaii’s shared transfer is from its page for Norwegian passengers, two standard bags included. TheBus is the cash fare; with a HOLO card it’s $3.00, and the W Line stops Downtown on Nimitz Highway, not at the pier.

Other ways in: Norwegian sells its own transfer, booked at least 4 days ahead, without a published price; SpeediShuttle runs shared and private rides to the piers without prices on its pages; and Viator’s Oahu port-transfer listings started at $18 when we checked.

A rental for the ride to the ship? Rarely worth it: we found no rental desk at either pier, Royal Caribbean puts HNL about 6 miles from Pier 2, and Roberts Hawaii sells a shared ride for $29 a person. HNL to the pier, by car or not · Should you rent at all?
Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

Norwegian is the one line here whose boarding rule we read, so it’s the only line on the list; the other row is our own margin, and we say so. Put in your scheduled landing and the sailing time from your cruise documents.

  • Norwegian: on board an hour before sailingNorwegian wants you at the terminal an hour before your embarkation time if you did Online Check-In, and aboard an hour before departure. Add up to 40 minutes from HNL, per Cruise Critic — the sum is ours, not Norwegian’s.—
  • Cab, rideshare or transfer, any lineA cab keeps no timetable of its own; the margin is ours, not any cruise line’s — three hours from touchdown to sailing, with Royal Caribbean’s 30-minute drive inside it.—

What counts is the check-in time printed in your boarding documents, not this check — and the same documents say whether you sail from Pier 2 or Pier 11 at Aloha Tower, half a mile apart by The Points Guy’s count.

Pride of America comes back to Honolulu on Saturdays, but we didn’t find Norwegian’s arrival time or an earliest-flight rule for it. Put in your flight and when you expect to be off the ship, and this lays out the ride, the wait and where the bags go — using only what each company publishes.

Transit and Bags

TheBus, Skyline and your suitcase

You can, if you travel light. TheBus W Line runs from the airport along Nimitz Highway to Downtown, then Kakaako, Ala Moana Center and Waikiki — every 10 minutes on weekdays and 15 at weekends, per Wikipedia’s route list. Cash is $3.25, exact fare, no transfer; a HOLO card’s 2-hour pass is $3.00, and the card caps you at $7.50 a day.

The catch is the bags. The airport allows one standard medium suitcase and one carry-on per rider, and the city’s transportation department adds that both must fit under or in front of your seat, or on your lap — so the W Line suits a carry-on traveler, not a family with checked bags. After 10:30 PM, Route 42 takes over the airport run, per the airport.

Skyline, Honolulu’s train, stops at the airport, at Lelepaua station between the International Parking Garage and the Terminal 2 garage, but it runs only as far as Middle Street. HART projects the Chinatown and Downtown segment for 2031, so for now the train gets you nowhere near a ship. The airport lists hours of 4 AM to 10 PM; the city said 10:30 PM when Segment 2 opened.

For the ship once you’re there — Pride of America, the piers and the islands — see our Hawaii cruise guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

Flying in the day before costs you a hotel night and buys back the whole of sail morning — a late inbound flight becomes a late dinner, not a missed ship.

One of our top twenty runs a free HNL shuttle: Best Western The Plaza, which puts the airport half a mile away and runs it 5 AM to 1 AM. Downtown, the Aston at the Executive Centre says “the pier is just 3 blocks away” without naming the pier, and lists the cruise terminals 1.5 miles off on the same page. In Waikiki, our three highest-ranked all include breakfast.

FAQ

Honolulu cruise airport FAQ

What is the closest airport to the Honolulu cruise terminal?

Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL) — and it's the only real choice, since the state describes Oahu's other big field, Kalaeloa, as a general-aviation reliever for HNL. Royal Caribbean puts HNL about 6 miles and 30 minutes from Pier 2. Ask anyone else and the clock moves: Cruise Critic says 20 minutes without traffic and up to 40 when it's busy, The Points Guy about 15, and Norwegian's old port PDF 5 miles and 10 minutes.

How do I get from HNL to the cruise terminal?

A cab is the simplest — about $40, per The Points Guy, from the stand on the center median outside baggage claim. Roberts Hawaii's shared transfer is $29 a person with two bags included, per its page for Norwegian passengers, and Norwegian sells its own transfer without printing a price. TheBus W Line is $3.25 cash to Downtown, a fare, not a door-to-door ride, and only if your bags pass its luggage rule.

How much is a taxi from HNL to the cruise port?

About $40, per The Points Guy — Norwegian's old port PDF says $15 to $20, but that PDF still lists ships Norwegian retired years ago. The airport's taxi page prints no fares at all. The only Honolulu meter rates we found are proposed rules from 2022, never confirmed as adopted, so trust the meter, not those numbers.

Can I take TheBus to the cruise ship with luggage?

Only a little of it. The airport's TheBus page allows one standard medium suitcase and one carry-on per rider, and the city's transportation department says both have to fit under or in front of your seat, or on your lap — a week's cruise luggage for two won't. If you do pack that light, the W Line leaves for Downtown about every 10 minutes on weekdays and 15 at weekends, per Wikipedia's route list, for $3.25 exact cash or $3.00 on a HOLO card.

Does the Skyline train go to the cruise terminal?

Not yet — and not for years. Skyline's airport stop, Lelepaua station, sits between the International Parking Garage and the Terminal 2 garage, but trains run only as far as Middle Street. HART projects passenger service on the stretch to Chinatown and Downtown for 2031.

Does my cruise line run a transfer from HNL?

Norwegian does: book it in Step 4 of myNCL Online Check-In, or on 800.327.7030, at least 4 days before you sail — its FAQ gives the method, not the price. Roberts Hawaii's page for Norwegian passengers lists a $29 shared ride to the pier and $26 back. For every other line, we found no published HNL transfer price, so ask yours before you book a cab.

Where do I pick up a rental car at HNL?

At the five-story Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility, directly across from Terminal 2, outside Baggage Claims 26 and 31. Ten companies are on Level 2 — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Thrifty and Sixt — and a shuttle runs from 4 AM to midnight from Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Neither pier has cruise parking, so plan to hand the car back before you board, not after.

Is there a lounge at HNL?

Yes — LoungePair sells day passes to the IASS Hawaii Lounge in Terminal 2, $28 for 3 hours when we checked. Useful on the way home, when the ship gets you off hours before your flight.

Can I store my bags in Honolulu?

On boarding day, yes — Cruise Critic says both terminals hold bags during morning embarkation through the end of check-in. Off the ship, Bounce lists 14 storage spots in Honolulu from about $2.25 a day, among them a Kaka'ako spot at $3.95 that it calls 8 minutes from the cruise terminal.

Can I fly home the same day I get off the ship?

Possibly, but nobody we read promises it. We found no cruise line's earliest-flight rule for Honolulu, and Norwegian's pages didn't give Pride of America's Saturday arrival time, so leave a wide gap. In August 2026 Tropical Storm Lala pushed Pride of America's disembarkation back a full day — so build in a spare day, not a spare hour.
