The Hudson Valley and West Point Before or After a New York Cruise

Each of these five stops sits about 46 to 76 miles from the three cruise terminals, by our route estimates, and each one keeps its own calendar. Storm King is closed on Tuesdays, Dia Beacon opens only Friday to Monday, and West Point checks every adult’s ID at the gate. Choose the day first. The car is the easy part.

Monday and Friday: everything open, at weekday prices

The day that works

Lay the stops and the nearest return desks across one week and two days come out clean. On a Monday or a Friday, Storm King, Dia Beacon, West Point and Bear Mountain are all open, Storm King charges its weekday price, and Budget on West 49th takes the car back until 11 at night. Saturday is the trap — three of the Manhattan desks we checked close by 3.

Hours from each place’s own page, read Oct 1, 2026. Storm King opens at 9 on October weekends and takes its last entry at 5. Woodbury Common listed 10 to 9 the day we checked, and we didn’t read the other days. Dia calls its hours seasonal. Checked Oct 1, 2026

A cruise rarely lets you choose the weekday, so read the grid from your end.

Ships that sail on a Sunday leave Saturday for the trip, and Saturday is the one day a Manhattan return gets hard. Coming off the ship on a Monday or a Friday is the easy case.

Tuesday rules out Storm King, and Tuesday to Thursday rules out Dia — plan West Point, Bear Mountain or the outlets those days, not the art.

Our route estimates, one way (OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic, no stops; New York traffic adds a lot). We placed the terminal and destination points by hand, so read each figure as roughly right, not exact. Our estimate

Manhattan is the short start for every stop. Red Hook and Bayonne add roughly 7 to 13 miles to each trip by the same estimate — 10 to 20 minutes on paper, more in real traffic.

Two stops in a day is realistic — three is a long one, and Dia closes at 5.

Pair the stops by bank: Dia sits across the river in Beacon, and the other four are on the west side.

Dia plus Storm King means a river crossing, not a detour.

At the gate

West Point asks for the ID most cruisers already carry

Since March 2026 the Army checks the ID of every visitor 18 or older at West Point’s gates, and it asks for a REAL ID-compliant card.

A passport works — the one you packed for the cruise.

Without a REAL ID card or a passport, the Army’s page lists a primary-plus-secondary ID combination instead — read it before you drive 50 miles to the gate.

Foreign visitors need their passport plus an escort who holds a military credential — line that up before the day, not at the gate.

The visitor center is at 2107 New South Post Road, Highland Falls, open daily 6 AM to 6 PM. West Point Tours runs a 1-hour-15 tour from $22 an adult and a cemetery tour from $25, both from the visitor center.

Book the tour if you want the grounds; the visitor center is the start either way.

Bring the passport off the ship. If you were going to leave it in a hotel safe on the way north, don’t. It’s the simplest ID West Point accepts.

Against the other ways to do it

A model, not a quote. The $50 a day is our assumption; Discover Cars showed New York “from $52” and Newark “from $33” on Oct 1, 2026, and calls those prices approximate. A Manhattan or Brooklyn pick-up carries New York City’s rental taxes and a Jersey City or Bayonne one New Jersey’s, both as the hub’s tax table sets them out. Fuel is about 117 miles there and back from the Manhattan terminal, at 30 mpg and $4.58 a gallon, AAA’s New York metro average on Sept 30, 2026. We carry no toll: leaving New York over the George Washington Bridge is free, and coming back over it costs a reported $16.79 at peak with E-ZPass, plus your company’s program fee. Other ways home we didn’t price. Admission is the weekend adult price; weekdays are $25, seniors $25 on weekends and youth 5 to 17 $18.

At a $50 rate, the day comes to about $134 for two from a Manhattan desk before the toll back into the city, and $56 of that is admission you’d pay however you arrived.

Four of you push it to about $190, admission included — roughly $48 each.

Switch the pick-up to New Jersey and two of you land near $132 — a couple of dollars, not a reason to cross the river.

We can’t tell you whether the bus package beats the car, because Coach USA didn’t show its price to us. Type its fare into the row beside the car and the answer is yours.

From Storm King’s and Dia’s ticket pages and New York State Parks, read Oct 1, 2026. Storm King’s weekend prices are peak pricing from Sept 26 to Nov 8, 2026. Checked Oct 1, 2026

A family of two adults and two teenagers pays about $92 at Storm King on a weekend, against $80 on a weekday — a weekday saves $12 before you’ve touched the car.

Bear Mountain’s fee is per car, collected 8 to 5 on weekends and holidays and 8 to 4 on weekdays, all year.

Dia’s cheapest ticket is the child’s. Its parking, though, is limited — the train may serve a family better than the car here.

    The tax upstate

A car rented upstate pays nearly the same tax

It’s tempting to take the train north and rent there, away from the city.

It barely works. Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester are all inside the same metropolitan district as the city, so a rental picked up there still pays the 6% supplemental tax — our reading, from the county list the city’s taxi commission prints for the same district.

What changes is the local sales tax. The state’s rate table puts Orange County at 8.125% and most of Westchester at 8.375%, against the city’s 8.875%.

Stack the two 6% rental taxes on top and an Orange County pick-up carries about 20.125%, Westchester about 20.375%, by our arithmetic.

That’s half a point to three-quarters of a point less than the city — about $0.25 to $0.38 a day on a $50 car, not a reason to ride a train north.

New Jersey is the real difference, and the hub’s tax table sets it out.

Dia is the easy one without a car — the train gets you within half a mile, and parking at the museum is limited anyway.

Storm King’s bus package bundles the ride and the ticket. For one or two people it’s the option to price first.

West Point and Bear Mountain are car trips, as far as the pages we read go.

Skip the rental if Dia is your only stop.

    Tickets, then car

    Tickets first, the car second

Buy Storm King tickets before anything else; its own page calls pre-purchase “essential to guarantee admission and parking”.

Then match the pick-up to your terminal. A Manhattan desk for Piers 88 and 90, Downtown Brooklyn for Red Hook, Jersey City or Newark for Cape Liberty.

Last, check that the return desk is open on the day the car comes back — the grid at the top already did half of that.

    FAQ

West Point, Storm King and Dia, answered

How far is West Point from the New York cruise terminal?

About 50 miles and 1 hr 13 min from the Manhattan terminal with no traffic, by our route estimate. From Brooklyn it’s about 62 miles and from Cape Liberty about 63.

Do I need REAL ID to visit West Point?

Usually, if you’re 18 or older. Since March 2026 every visitor shows ID at the gate; the Army asks for a REAL ID-compliant card or a passport, and lists a primary-plus-secondary ID combination for anyone without one. Foreign visitors need a passport and an escort with a military credential.

Is Storm King open on Tuesdays?

No. Storm King is closed on Tuesdays and open 10 to 6 on the other weekdays, from 9 on October weekends, with last entry at 5. Adults pay $25 on weekdays and $28 on weekends, and weekend peak pricing runs from Sept 26 to Nov 8, 2026.

Can you get to Dia Beacon without a car?

Yes. Dia Beacon is about half a mile, an 8- to 10-minute walk, from the Beacon Metro-North station, and it’s open Friday to Monday, 10 to 5, on its current schedule. Adults are $25. Metro-North raised fares 5% on July 1, 2026, and we couldn’t read the Beacon fare.

How much is parking at Bear Mountain State Park?

The state charges $10 a car, every day of the year. Perkins Memorial Drive to the summit is open April 1 to Nov 30, weather permitting.

Is it cheaper to rent a car in the Hudson Valley than in New York City?

Not for the tax. Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester are inside the same metropolitan district, so the 6% supplemental rental tax still applies by our reading. A New Jersey pick-up pays 6.625% sales tax plus $5 a day instead.
