Three airports · three terminals · two states

Newark, JFK or LaGuardia to the New York Cruise Port: Rent or Ride?

Match the airport to the terminal before you price anything. Newark is about 9 miles from Cape Liberty, by Royal Caribbean’s figure, and JFK’s flat cab to Manhattan comes to about $76 before tip. We found no rental desk at any of the three terminals, so a car from the airport is one you either park for the week or hand back somewhere else. The state you collect it in sets the tax: about 20.875% in New York City by our arithmetic, 6.625% plus $5 a day in New Jersey.

Before the fare

Cape Liberty is a Newark trip and Manhattan is a LaGuardia or JFK one, on distance alone. For the ride to the ship, a rental didn’t come out ahead at either pairing we priced, once the return or the parking is counted — at Cape Liberty, four of you keeping a Newark car parked through a 7-night cruise comes to about $856 on our assumptions, against two rideshare fares.

Our route estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with no traffic and no stops — New York traffic adds a lot. Our estimate

The short pairings are the obvious ones: Newark to Cape Liberty and LaGuardia to Manhattan, both under 10 miles.

Brooklyn sits in between, about 14 miles from JFK and 16 from Newark.

From Newark it costs two tolls on our route, the Port Authority crossing and an MTA one, about $24 at peak with E-ZPass.

So book the airport that fits the pier, not the one with the lower airfare — unless the flight saving beats the longer ride.

Distance is only half of it.

The advertised price

Newark’s thirty-three dollars against JFK’s fifty-three, after tax

Discover Cars showed Newark “from $33” a day on Oct 1, 2026, JFK “from $53” and New York as a whole “from $52”, and it calls its prices approximate.

The averages it printed beside them tell more — $68 a day at Newark, $109 at JFK and $80 across New York.

Then the tax lands on top, and it lands differently on each side of the Hudson.

Prices from Discover Cars’ own airport pages on Oct 1, 2026; the tax is our arithmetic on the two states’ published rates (New Jersey’s 6.625% plus $5 a day; New York City’s, per the hub’s tax table). No airport charges, since neither airport publishes one where we looked. Our arithmetic

At the averages, a Newark day comes to about $78 with tax and a JFK day about $132, our arithmetic.

That gap is mostly the rate, not the tax.

At the lowest prices New Jersey’s flat $5 does the damage — on a $33 day its tax comes to about 22% of the rate, heavier than New York’s, by our arithmetic.

Read the tax lines on both quotes before you let tax decide the airport. Over a long road trip the sums change again; the after-cruise page runs them.

Newark

The counters left Station P3 in 2023

Rented at Newark before late 2023? The counters have moved.

Since Nov 15, 2023 the Rental Car Center has filled levels 1 to 3 of the Terminal A parking garage, at 132 Carson Road. From Terminal A you walk; from B and C you ride the free AirTrain to the Terminal A station.

Eleven brands share it — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Drivo, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty — across 3,362 rental spaces, per the operator’s fact sheet. Public parking takes floors 4 to 6.

Avis and Hertz list it as open 24 hours — Enterprise lists 5 AM to 11:59 PM, with after-hours returns.

The airport warns of AirTrain modernization work and replacement buses. Leave slack on a sail morning.

Newark’s facility charge and concession fee didn’t appear on any page we could read. The calculator below assumes 11% and leaves the facility charge to your quote.

Under 25? Enterprise at Newark charges $25 a day for the young-driver fee, so a four-day car carries $100 of it.

Its Newark page also prices the counter extras: a damage waiver from $11.99 to $74.99 a day and supplemental liability at $15.89. Check what your own card or policy covers before the agent asks.

Without a car

  • A New York yellow cab from Newark charges the meter plus a $20 Newark surcharge and tolls
  • A cab to Bayonne is a negotiated flat rate, not the meter, so agree it first
  • Rideshare from Newark to Cape Liberty was about $25 to $35 for UberX in an August 2024 article we couldn’t confirm

With a car

  • About 9 miles on the Turnpike to Exit 14A, then Route 440 South, per Royal Caribbean
  • No rental desk at the pier that we found, and no rental page we read mentions a shuttle to it
  • $35 a day to park at the terminal, per Royal Caribbean’s US page

Against the other ways to do it

A sketch built on our own $60 base rate for a car that seats four with bags; put your quote in its place. Discover Cars showed Newark “from $33” a day on Oct 1, 2026 and calls its prices approximate. New Jersey adds 6.625% sales tax and $5 a day for up to 28 days. The 11% airport charge is our assumption, since Newark publishes none where we looked. Fuel covers 18 miles there and back at 30 mpg and $4.58 a gallon, AAA’s New York metro average on Sept 30, 2026. We count no Turnpike toll because we couldn’t get a reliable one. Parking is seven days at $35, the rate on Royal Caribbean’s US page — its Singapore copy still says $22, so confirm it.

Kept for the cruise, the car runs about $856 for four on these numbers — and $245 of that is parking.

Two of you in a $50 car still come to about $761. That buys 18 miles of driving.

Hold that against two rideshare fares for 9 miles each way.

    A shorter version exists.

Enterprise in Bayonne takes after-hours returns, so a car can go back there and a cab can cover the last stretch — though it’s closed Sundays, and its page doesn’t mention Cape Liberty.

The car earns its place only when it’s working on the days around the ship. The night-before page prices a Newark hotel with self-parking, and the after-cruise page has the desks for driving on.

Our $50 base rate, not a quote; Discover Cars showed JFK “from $53” on Oct 1, 2026. Tax is about 20.875%, our arithmetic on New York’s three rates, and the 11% airport charge is assumed. Fuel covers 17 miles at $4.58. A JFK car handed back in Manhattan is a one-way, and Enterprise says those can carry a drop charge even within one city — that box is yours to fill. We count no toll. If your route takes the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, the MTA charges $7.46 with a New York E-ZPass, and local streets at or below 60th Street sit inside the $9 peak congestion zone.

On our numbers the car is about $70 before any drop charge, and the cab about $76 before tip. Close on paper, not on the curb.

The car still has to go back to a desk, and no desk is at the pier.

The nearest Midtown desks are still a cab ride from the pier; the hub lists them.

The cab’s fare is flat to Manhattan: $70 plus the MTA tax, the improvement and congestion surcharges and the $2 airport fee, with $5 more on weekdays from 4 to 8 PM. Brooklyn is on the meter — no flat fare there.

JFK’s counters are at Federal Circle, a free AirTrain ride from every terminal, with trains every 5 to 15 minutes per the airport — Enterprise has moved, for now, into the National and Alamo building there.

Ride the AirTrain out to Jamaica or Howard Beach instead and it’s $8.75; the same $8.75 applies at Newark between the terminals and the rail station, unless you hold a New Jersey Transit or Amtrak ticket.

Mind the week of Oct 5 to 15, 2026, when the AirTrain shuts overnight from 10 PM to 6 AM and buses replace it. Hertz at JFK closes from 2 AM to 6 AM anyway.

LaGuardia is the short run, about 8.6 miles to the Manhattan terminal by our estimate. Rental shuttles leave from each terminal, and a yellow cab is on the meter plus a $5 surcharge and the $2 access fee.

The Brooklyn terminal’s own page puts a LaGuardia cab at about $28 to $38, and a Newark one at $80 to $100, in undated estimates.

      Tolls

Which airport runs pay a crossing

Newark to Cape Liberty stays in New Jersey, on the Turnpike — we couldn’t get a reliable Turnpike toll from the authority’s table, so we print none rather than a guess.

Newark to Manhattan or Brooklyn pays a Port Authority crossing into New York, and Brooklyn adds an MTA one.

JFK and LaGuardia to Manhattan can skip a crossing toll on a free East River bridge, or pay the MTA for the Queens-Midtown Tunnel — our reading of the routes, so check yours. Either way, crossing Midtown streets at or below 60th Street can add the congestion toll.

The rates, the one-way rule and each rental company’s program fee are on the hub’s toll section.

      FAQ

Newark, JFK, LaGuardia and the piers: questions

How far is Newark airport from the Cape Liberty cruise port?

About 9 miles by the New Jersey Turnpike, per Royal Caribbean, and roughly 16 minutes with no traffic by our route estimate. An August 2024 article put UberX at about $25 to $35, which we couldn’t confirm; a New York cab to Bayonne is a negotiated flat rate.

Do you have to pay for the AirTrain to get to the rental cars?

No. At Newark the AirTrain is free between the terminals, parking and the Rental Car Center, and at JFK it’s free between the terminals and Federal Circle. Both charge $8.75 to or from the rail stations, unless at Newark you hold a New Jersey Transit or Amtrak ticket.

How much is a taxi from JFK to the Manhattan cruise terminal?

JFK to Manhattan is a $70 flat fare plus a 50-cent MTA tax, a $1 improvement surcharge, a $2.50 congestion surcharge and a $2 airport access fee, about $76 before tip, per the TLC. Add $5 on weekdays from 4 to 8 PM.

Is the JFK AirTrain running at night in October 2026?

Not from Oct 5 to 15, 2026. The airport lists full overnight shutdowns from 10 PM to 6 AM on all lines, with replacement buses. Hertz at JFK is closed from 2 AM to 6 AM in any case.

Where is the rental car center at Newark airport?

On levels 1 to 3 of the Terminal A parking garage, 132 Carson Road, since Nov 15, 2023. Walk from Terminal A, or take the free AirTrain from Terminals B and C. It is no longer at Station P3.

How much is a taxi from LaGuardia or Newark to the cruise terminal?

From LaGuardia a yellow cab runs the meter plus a $5 surcharge and the $2 access fee; the Brooklyn terminal’s page estimates $28 to $38. From Newark the same page estimates $80 to $100; the city’s $20 Newark surcharge applies to New York cabs heading to Newark, not to the ride from it. Both are undated estimates.
