Match the airport to your terminal. For Cape Liberty, fly into Newark: Royal Caribbean puts it 9 miles away. For Manhattan’s Pier 88, Holland America puts Newark at 15.5 miles and LaGuardia at 16.5, against 25.7 from JFK.
Sailing from Brooklyn? Virgin says Red Hook is “actually more convenient” for many sailors arriving via JFK. Whichever you pick, land the day before if you can: New York traffic is the wild card, not the miles.
Pick Newark if
- You’re sailing Royal Caribbean or Celebrity from Cape Liberty
- You want a free shuttle to an airport hotel the night before: seven of our twenty are there
- You’d rather take NJ Transit to Penn Station, $17.25 with AirTrain included
Pick JFK or LaGuardia if
- You’re sailing from Manhattan or Brooklyn and the flight is better
- You want a known taxi fare: $70 flat from JFK to Manhattan, plus surcharges
- You’re happy on a free bus: the Q70 runs from LaGuardia to the subway

Three terminals, three airports
For Pier 88, Cruise NYC says to come in from the north on Twelfth Avenue, Route 9A, to West 55th Street. The Brooklyn terminal’s car entrance is at Bowne and Imlay Streets in Red Hook. Cape Liberty is on the Bayonne waterfront in New Jersey, “seven miles south of Manhattan” per Celebrity. Your cruise documents name your terminal.

What the ride to the ship costs
Pick your airport and set how many of you are riding. Carnival charges per person and taxis by the car, so the cheapest answer changes with the size of your party.

One way, before tip, as each company published it on September 27, 2026. Carnival’s transfers are for its own guests and go to Manhattan. The JFK taxi fare is the TLC’s flat rate to Manhattan; Holland America’s taxi estimates run $35 to $85 from LaGuardia and $45 to $85 from Newark. The trains aren’t priced here because they stop short of the pier: AirTrain and the subway are $11.75 from JFK, per the MTA, and NJ Transit to Penn Station is $17.25 from Newark, AirTrain included. Viator lists private transfers to the terminals from $115 to $155, and GO Airlink sells shared rides to the Manhattan terminal, but its prices show only in its booking engine and it runs no shared ride to Brooklyn. No line publishes a Cape Liberty transfer price.
Heading home? Carnival’s transfer back is $44.99 a person to any of the three, with flights no earlier than noon at JFK and 1 PM at LaGuardia or Newark. Norwegian prices all three airports the same but doesn’t publish the figure.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
Carnival publishes its own cut-offs. Beyond those, the yardstick is our rule of thumb, labelled as ours. Enter your landing time and the departure time from your cruise documents.
- Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsLand by 12:00 PM for Carnival’s $44.99 transfer to Manhattan, which leaves at 10 AM, 11 AM and 12:45 PM.—
- Taxi, car or subway, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Holland America allows 70 to 90 minutes from JFK to Pier 88, depending on traffic. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—

- Taxi, car or bus, any lineNo cut-off of its own. Holland America allows about an hour from LaGuardia to Pier 88. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves.—

Whatever the ride, your cruise line’s check-in window is the real deadline. Cruise NYC says boarding at the Manhattan and Brooklyn terminals generally starts between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, and Royal Caribbean gives Cape Liberty guests an arrival slot.

The morning you’re back
Ships clear early, flights leave late, and New York traffic sits in between. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait, and what to do with the bags.

Can you get to the ship without a car?
To Manhattan, yes. Cruise NYC says to take the A, C, B, D or 1 train to Columbus Circle, then the M57 or M31 bus, or walk. From JFK, AirTrain and the subway together are $11.75, per the MTA; from LaGuardia, the free Q70 bus meets the subway; from Newark, NJ Transit gets you to Penn Station for $17.25.
To Brooklyn, with a change. Take the 2, 3, 4, 5, N or R to Borough Hall, then the B61 from Atlantic Avenue and Court Street to Pioneer and Van Brunt Streets, per Cruise NYC. NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn route stops at Red Hook, at Ferris Street and Clinton Wharf, for $4 one way.
To Cape Liberty, not quite. Royal Caribbean says to take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to 34th Street in Bayonne, then a Bayonne cab for the last two miles or so. You can’t walk in: “the Port Authority prohibits any guests to arrive at the port on foot,” per Celebrity.
Bags: the New York terminals can’t store luggage, per Cruise NYC. Bounce lists spots near the Manhattan Cruise Terminal from $2.90 a day, the nearest about a 7-minute walk away, and has pages for Newark, LaGuardia and Jamaica Station, on the JFK AirTrain.
Flying in the day before
The day-before flight is the one move that takes New York traffic off sail day. It costs a hotel night. It buys you the morning.
Ten of our top twenty run a free airport shuttle: all 7 by Newark, the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield Inn at JFK, and the Hampton Inn at LaGuardia. None of them runs a ride to the ship. For the Manhattan and Brooklyn hotels, take a cab or the train in, and a short cab to the pier in the morning.

New York cruise airport FAQ
What is the closest airport to the New York cruise ports?
It depends on your terminal. For Cape Liberty it's Newark, 9 miles away per Royal Caribbean. For Manhattan's Pier 88, Holland America puts Newark 15.5 miles away and LaGuardia 16.5, against 25.7 for JFK. For Brooklyn, Cunard calls LaGuardia the fastest, about 20 minutes door-to-door, while Princess's port guide says an hour and 15 and MSC says 50 to 80 minutes from any of the three. Virgin says Red Hook is "actually more convenient" for many sailors arriving via JFK.
Should I fly into JFK, LaGuardia or Newark for a cruise?
Newark, if you're sailing from Cape Liberty — and it's the easy one for the night before too: seven of our top-20 hotels sit around it, every one with a free airport shuttle. For Manhattan or Brooklyn, take the airport with the better flight. JFK's flat taxi fare to Manhattan makes the ride predictable, and LaGuardia's free Q70 bus gets you to the subway.
How much is a taxi from JFK to the cruise terminal?
To Manhattan, the TLC's flat fare is $70 either way, plus a 50-cent MTA surcharge, a $1 improvement surcharge, a $2.50 congestion surcharge, $5 at weekday rush hour (4 to 8 PM), tolls and tip. Cruise NYC's own page still shows a $52 flat rate; the TLC, which sets the fare, says $70. The flat fare covers Manhattan only, so Red Hook is on the meter. From LaGuardia it's the meter plus $5, and from Newark the meter plus a $20 Newark surcharge and the driver's return tolls.
Does Carnival run a transfer from the New York airports?
Yes, to Manhattan: $44.99 a person from JFK or Newark, and "starting at" $44.99 from LaGuardia. Land by noon at JFK or LaGuardia, or 1 PM at Newark. Going home, Carnival's product pages want flights no earlier than noon at JFK and 1 PM at LaGuardia or Newark; its general New York page says 1 PM for all three. Norwegian charges the same from all three airports without publishing the price, and Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Cunard publish no New York transfer price.
Can I get to Cape Liberty by public transit?
Not all the way. Royal Caribbean says to take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to 34th Street in Bayonne and call a Bayonne cab for the last two miles or so. Celebrity says the Port Authority doesn't let anyone arrive on foot. Taxis, Uber, Lyft and car services can all drive in.
Can I take the subway to the Manhattan or Brooklyn terminal?
To Manhattan, yes: Cruise NYC says to take the A, C, B, D or 1 to Columbus Circle, then the M57 or M31 bus or walk. To Brooklyn, it's the 2, 3, 4, 5, N or R to Borough Hall, then the B61 from Atlantic Avenue and Court Street to Pioneer and Van Brunt Streets. NYC Ferry's South Brooklyn route also stops at Red Hook, at Ferris Street and Clinton Wharf, for $4 one way.
Is there a lounge at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark?
LoungePair sells six at JFK, from $36 (Turkish Airlines) to $60 (Primeclass), and one at LaGuardia: the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in Terminal B, $44. We found no LoungePair page for Newark, and we couldn't confirm Priority Pass listings at any of the three.
Can I fly home the same morning I get off the ship?
Norwegian asks you out of your cabin by 8 AM. Carnival's transfers want flights no earlier than noon from JFK and 1 PM from LaGuardia or Newark, and Princess says 6 hours after the ship arrives for LaGuardia and 7 for JFK or Newark. The Coming Home tool on this page works out the gap for your flight.
