Three days, a week, a fortnight: where to sign for the long drive
These are the totals for a car that leaves the region, not a one-day hop.
On a three-day car at $50 the state line is worth about $6, by our arithmetic. At $70 a day it grows to about $35 over a week and $70 over two, because New York’s percentage keeps climbing with the bill while New Jersey’s $5 fee is flat and stops after 28 days.
| Pick-up | 3 days at $50 | 7 days at $50 | 7 days at $70 | 14 days at $70 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A Manhattan or Brooklyn desk | $181 | $423 | $592 | $1,185 |
| A Jersey City or Bayonne desk | $175 | $408 | $557 | $1,115 |
| Newark airport | $193 | $449 | $615 | $1,230 |
| JFK or LaGuardia | $201 | $470 | $657 | $1,315 |
Our arithmetic: base rate plus tax, and New Jersey’s daily fee where it applies. Airport rows add an 11% concession fee we assume, since no airport here publishes one where we looked. No fuel, tolls or drop charges. The tax rates themselves, with the 11%-or-12% conflict, are on the hub. Our arithmetic
The break-even sits near $35 a day, our arithmetic — under that, New Jersey’s flat fee outweighs its lower rate, and a city desk comes out level or ahead.
Most after-cruise road trips rent above it. So the longer the trip, the more the crossing pays — as long as the crossing itself is cheap.
Off a Manhattan or Brooklyn ship, a cab through a tunnel to Jersey City eats a chunk of a three-day saving, so price that ride before you chase the difference.
Off a Cape Liberty ship you’re already in New Jersey. Rent there.
Piers 88 and 90, disembark morning
We preset the checker to a Sunday at 9 AM — the worst morning of the week for Midtown desks.
Budget on West 49th is open by then; Enterprise in Midtown doesn’t open until 4 in the afternoon, so a Sunday booking there costs you most of the day.
Addresses and walking distances for every Manhattan desk sit on the hub’s desk list, not here.
Red Hook to State Street before the noon close
Sunday is where the two Downtown Brooklyn desks part ways — Enterprise closes at noon, while Avis across the street stays open until 9 at night.
A slow disembark plus a slow cab can miss the Enterprise window. Book Avis if your ship docks on a Sunday.
A Sunday arrival in Bayonne: Avis or the airport
Cape Liberty is the terminal built for drivers — and the one with the thinnest Sunday choice around it.
Both Enterprise branches nearby are shut all day Sunday. Avis in Jersey City opens 7 to 7 every day, and Newark airport’s Avis and Hertz counters never close, so a Sunday car comes from one of those two.
Run your own day and time below. If your own car waited at the port all week instead, the night-before page has the garage’s fine print.
Leaving the city is the free direction
The crossing you pay is the one back into Manhattan, not the one out.
The Port Authority collects only from cars entering New York.
Driving out to New Jersey over the Lincoln, the Holland or the George Washington costs nothing — a road trip west starts toll-free, and the bill waits for the drive back in.
If the car returns to a city desk, the hub’s toll section has the 2026 rates and each company’s program cap.
For a week of driving, read Avis’s e-Toll Unlimited before you accept it at the counter. It bills every day of the rental, not only the toll days — $54.95 to $181.93 a week depending on the location, per Avis’s page.
The per-toll-day programs cap out within a week anyway, so Unlimited only pays if you hit tolls almost every day.
Fill up on the Jersey side
Gas prices move weekly; these are the AAA averages the day we checked.
AAA put regular at $4.58 a gallon in the New York metro on Sept 30, 2026, and at $4.40 around Newark the next day.
Upstate sits in between — about $4.48 in Dutchess and Putnam and $4.41 around Kingston, the same day.
On a 600-mile week at 30 mpg, about 20 gallons, that’s roughly $92 bought in the city against $88 near Newark, by our arithmetic.
A few dollars, not a detour.
The fuel cost that actually hurts is the company’s refuelling charge — return the car full, from a station close to the desk.
Dropping the car somewhere other than where you got it
A road trip that ends at an airport or in another city is a one-way, and Enterprise says those must be booked ahead.
Some carry a one-time drop charge or a mileage charge shown at booking — even for a return in the same city.
So a Manhattan pick-up returned at Newark can cost more than the daily rate suggests. Price it as a one-way before you assume it’s free; our one-way guide explains how the fee is built.
Ending at Newark’s Hertz counter? Its page allows a 29-minute grace period, then lists a late service charge of $12 a day, up to $60, for a car more than 12 hours late.
Only going as far as the Hudson Valley? The Hudson Valley page sorts its stops by weekday.
Search the side of the river you’ll be standing on
Search Manhattan if the ship came into Piers 88 and 90, Brooklyn if it came into Red Hook, and Jersey City or Newark if it came into Cape Liberty.
For anything past three days, run a New Jersey search alongside the city one and compare the tax lines.
- Pick-up: Manhattan, Brooklyn or nearby
- Drop-off: a city desk, an airport or another city
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Free cancellation until 48 hrs before pickup
Driving on after a New York cruise
Is it cheaper to rent a car in New Jersey or New York City?
For a road trip, usually New Jersey, once the daily rate is above about $35, by our arithmetic. At $70 a day the New Jersey car carries about $35 less tax over a week. Below that rate, New Jersey’s flat $5-a-day fee makes the city level or cheaper.
Which rental desks are open on a Sunday after a New York cruise?
Near Manhattan, Budget on West 49th opens at 7 AM; Enterprise in Midtown only from 4 to 8 PM. In Downtown Brooklyn, Avis stays open until 9 PM while Enterprise closes at noon. Near Cape Liberty both Enterprise branches are closed, so it’s Avis in Jersey City (7 to 7) or Newark airport.
Do you pay a toll leaving Manhattan for New Jersey?
Not at the Port Authority crossings. The Lincoln and Holland tunnels and the George Washington Bridge charge only cars entering New York, so you pay on the way back in, not on the way out.
Can I return a New York rental car at a different location?
Yes, as a one-way. Enterprise says one-way rentals must be booked ahead and some carry a drop charge or mileage charge shown at booking, even for a return in the same city. Price it before you assume a Newark or JFK return is free.
Is gas cheaper in New Jersey than New York City?
A little. AAA had regular at $4.40 around Newark on Oct 1, 2026 and $4.58 in the New York metro on Sept 30. On a 600-mile week that’s about $4 saved, our arithmetic.
What happens if I return a rental car late at Newark airport?
Hertz’s Newark page gives a 29-minute grace period, then lists a late service charge of $12 a day, up to $60, for a car more than 12 hours late. Other companies set their own rules; read your contract.
