The Cavalier is the splurge if you want the beach the night before. It's AAA Four Diamond, on Atlantic Avenue at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, with a Beach Club and seaside infinity pool, the SeaHill Spa and the Tarnished Truth Distilling Company in the building.
The ship is the trade. By our routing the terminal is about 19.8 road miles and 30 minutes away with no traffic, and Marriott runs no shuttle — so sail morning starts with a highway, not a stroll.
Valet is the only parking, $34 a day, and Marriott doesn't say whether a car can stay while you cruise. You must be 21 to check in.
Book it for the night before the night before, and spend the last night downtown if you'd rather wake up by the gangway.
Book it if
- A beach night before the cruise
- A tasting at the on-site distillery
- A spa morning before the drive
Look elsewhere if
- You want to wake up near the ship.
- You're under 21.
- You need to leave the car while you sail.
