Fly into Trieste Airport if you can — it’s the closest by far. Our routing puts it about 24.6 miles (39.6 km) and 40 minutes from the Stazione Marittima with no traffic, and a train leaves from its own rail stop, a 425 m walkway from Arrivals.
The airport’s own taxi company lists €75 (about US$85) into central Trieste, bags and motorway tolls included. Going back, Radio Taxi Trieste prints a fixed €60 (about US$65) from the central zone to the airport, supplements included.
Venice Marco Polo has more flights and is about 92.9 road miles away — Holland America says about 2 hours. That’s the airport its transfers use, not a short hop.
Before any of that, check the port on your booking. “Trieste (Venice)” means Trieste, and an MSC booking may say Monfalcone instead.
Take the train if
- You’re one or two people with bags you can wheel
- You’re staying near Trieste Centrale
- You land between the morning and the evening trains
Take a taxi if
- You land the morning you sail
- Three or four of you split one fare
- Your hotel is on the coast at Barcola or Miramare

Who sails from Trieste, and what they call it
Most of these lines put “Venice” next to Trieste in their own marketing. The ship still leaves from Trieste. Here’s what each line’s own pages said when we read them on October 3–4, 2026.
| Line | How it names the port | Ships and dates we found | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holland America | “Trieste (Venice)” | Oosterdam from Trieste in 2026; Oosterdam and Nieuw Statendam in 2027 | hollandamerica.com |
| Princess | “Trieste (for Venice)” | Sun Princess and Enchanted Princess for the 2027 Mediterranean, Trieste among five homeports; “the port location is subject to change” | princess.com |
| Norwegian | A Trieste page titled for Venice | “Ship will DEPART from this port”; ships and dates didn’t show on the page | ncl.com |
| MSC Cruises | “Trieste (Venice)”; Monfalcone listed separately | Ship not named on MSC’s page; CruiseMapper, an aggregator, shows MSC Fantasia on Saturdays in October 2026 | msccruisesusa.com; cruisemapper.com |
| Costa | “Mediterraneo da Trieste” | Costa Deliziosa sailings from October 10, 2026, per search results only — the pages didn’t load for us | costacrociere.it (search results) |
| Regent Seven Seas | Trieste | Seven Seas Prestige from Trieste on July 29, August 21 and October 25, 2027 — the three voyages we read | rssc.com |
Holland America and MSC both give the terminal as Molo dei Bersaglieri 3 — the Stazione Marittima, run by Trieste Terminal Passeggeri (TTP), by Piazza Unità. Costa’s and TUI’s parking pages say “Molo IV”, where the car park sits about 100 m from Trieste Centrale; whether their ships berth there too isn’t stated, so read your documents.
A trade report from May 2026 also names TUI Cruises, Marella and Royal Caribbean among Trieste’s 2026 lines, without saying which start their cruises here. We found no Royal Caribbean page selling a Trieste departure, so we don’t list it.
Coming from Venice? Our routing from Marco Polo is about 92.9 miles and 1 hr 46 min with no traffic. Stay near the ship the night before, not in Venice — our nineteen Trieste hotels start a few minutes’ walk from the terminal.
The airport up the coast, the terminal on the Rive
Trieste Airport sits at Ronchi dei Legionari, north-west of the city, with its own 1.5 km link road to the A4 motorway. The city wraps the Gulf of Trieste, and the Stazione Marittima is on the waterfront by Piazza Unità. Venice and Ljubljana are off this map, two hours west and about 80 minutes east.
Trieste, Venice or Ljubljana
Ljubljana’s airport, across the border in Slovenia, is about 72.0 road miles (115.9 km) and 1 hr 23 min from the terminal by our routing. Slovenia’s motorways need an e-vignette registered to your plate, and the tourist board lists a weekly one at €16.00 (about US$18). Ask the rental desk whether it’s included.
Fares and dates are on Booking.com. Land the day before, not the morning you sail.

What the ride to the ship costs
Two fares from Trieste Airport come from people who sell the ride. The taxi row is per car, not per person, from the airport’s own taxi company to central Trieste; the bus fare is the one NH prints.

| Bus 51, as NH prints the fare | — |
One way, in euros, as printed on October 3–4, 2026. Taxi Trieste Airport’s €75 covers bags and motorway tolls; its tariff page carries no date. The Modernist prints bus 51 at about €5.00 (about US$6) and a taxi at about €65.00 (about US$75), and NH a taxi at about €77 (about US$85) — hotel figures, not the operator’s. Omio, a booking site, showed regional trains from €5 (about US$6) and a fastest run of 28 minutes; Trenitalia’s own fare page didn’t load for us.
Seven rental desks share the arrivals area — Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Locauto-Enterprise, Sicily by Car, Drivalia and Sixt. Discover Cars showed rentals at the airport from US$22 a day on October 3, 2026, a price that moves daily.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
No line we read publishes a landing cut-off for Trieste — every row here is our own margin, not a rule. Put in your scheduled landing and the sailing time from your cruise documents.
- Train or taxi to the Stazione MarittimaNo line we read publishes a cut-off for Trieste. Our rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves.—
- The drive from Venice Marco PoloOur rule of thumb: land at least 5 hours before — Holland America puts the drive at about 2 hours, Princess at about 2.5.—
Your boarding documents set the check-in time that matters. We found no published check-in window for the Stazione Marittima, and Holland America says there’s no luggage storage at the pier.
Fly in a day early. Walk to the ship in the morning.
We ranked nineteen hotels for a Trieste cruise, fourteen of them in the centre, between about a tenth of a mile and a mile on foot from the terminal. Tell us the flight and the ship, and we’ll pick the night that fits your landing.
The morning you’re back
No line we read publishes a disembarkation time for Trieste. TTP hands cars back from its car park between 07:00 and 13:00, and Radio Taxi Trieste's fixed fare from the central zone to the airport is €60, supplements included. Put in your flight and when you expect to be off, and this lays out the ride and the wait.
Partner links (rental cars) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
The airport train, the taxi meter and your suitcase
The train is the link most cruisers miss. Trieste Airport built its rail stop at the end of a 425 m raised walkway from the terminal. Its page lists 6 high-speed and 48 interregional trains a day — plus two to and from Ljubljana. The journey times we have, 23 to 29 minutes, come from the airport’s 2019 release, so check today’s timetable.
From Trieste Centrale, the Stazione Marittima is about 0.8 road miles by our routing — a short taxi, or a walk along the Rive if your bags roll.
Trieste’s taxis run on a meter, per Radio Taxi Trieste’s tariff effective July 14, 2025. It’s €4 (about US$4) for the first 77 m and €0.10 (about US$0.11) for each 77 m after, with a €7 (about US$8) minimum — plus €2.40 (about US$3) to or from the port. Nights from 22:00 to 06:00 add €2 (about US$2), and a bag over 125 cm adds €1 (about US$1).
Your hotel collects a tourist tax on top, set by the City of Trieste’s 2026 table: €3.30 (about US$4) a person a night at a 4-star, €3.00 (about US$3) at a 3-star and €3.80 (about US$4) at a 5-star, for up to five nights in a row. Exemptions apply, so check the city’s rules.
Holland America says there’s no luggage storage at the pier, so leave bags at your hotel until you head to the ship. For the terminal and the lines, see our Trieste cruise guide.
Flying in the day before
One night in Trieste takes the clock off sail morning. After a transatlantic flight you’ll want the ship a short walk away, not a two-hour drive from Venice.
None of our nineteen runs an airport shuttle. Hotel Italia and Urban Hotel Design book taxis for guests without printing a fare, and Hotel Major, by the airport, says it’s 5 minutes away — about 2.2 road miles by our routing.
Six for the night before

Going back, Radio Taxi Trieste prints a fixed €60 from the central zone to the airport, supplements included. On the meter it's €4 for the first 77 m, €0.10 for every 77 m after, and €2.40 to or from the port. Taxis wait outside Arrivals from 08:00 to 24:00, per the airport.
Is there a train from Trieste Airport to the city?
Yes. A 425 m raised walkway joins the terminal to the Trieste Airport rail stop. The airport's 2019 release put trains to Trieste at 23 to 29 minutes, and its page lists 6 high-speed and 48 interregional trains a day. Omio, a booking site, showed regional fares from €5 in October 2026; we couldn't read Trenitalia's own. From Trieste Centrale the terminal is about 0.8 road miles.
How far is Trieste from Venice airport?
Holland America says 94 miles (150 km) and about 2 hours, depending on traffic. Our routing gives 92.9 miles and 1 hr 46 min with no traffic, and Princess's blog says to plan for about 2.5 hours. Holland America transfers from Marco Polo only, not from Treviso.
Does a "Trieste (Venice)" cruise leave from Venice?
No. It leaves from Trieste. Holland America and MSC market the port as "Trieste (Venice)", Princess as "Trieste (for Venice)", and Norwegian's Trieste page is titled for Venice. The ship sails from the Stazione Marittima, about two hours' drive from Venice.
Can I fly into Ljubljana for a Trieste cruise?
You can. Our routing puts Ljubljana's airport about 72.0 miles (115.9 km) and 1 hr 23 min from the terminal. Slovenia's motorways need an e-vignette tied to your plate; the tourist board lists a weekly one at €16.00 and fines of €300 to €800 (about US$335–900). Ask the rental company whether it's included.

We couldn't confirm it. Uber's page for the airport lists Uber Taxi and also says taxis aren't available for pickup there through Uber. Plan on the taxi rank, the train or a booked transfer.
Which car rental companies are at Trieste Airport?
Seven, in the arrivals area: Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Locauto-Enterprise, Sicily by Car, Drivalia and Sixt, open when flights land, per the airport.
Does MSC sail from Trieste or Monfalcone?
Both appear on MSC's site: it has a Trieste page that mentions "Cruises from Trieste (Venice) in 2026" and a separate Monfalcone page, at Via Vittorio Veneto. They're different ports, so check which one your booking names.
Is there a bus from Trieste Airport to the cruise terminal?
Not to the terminal itself. Bus 51 runs from the airport to the coach terminal by the silos beside Trieste Centrale; hotels print the fare at about €4.50 to €5.00 (about US$5–6). From there it's a short taxi or a walk along the Rive.
