From the arrivals hall at Ronchi dei Legionari to a rental counter
Seven brands share the arrivals area. Their cars are just outside.
Trieste is a small airport, and for renters that’s good news — the counters sit in the arrivals area, not in a car park across the road.
The airport says the offices “are open concurrently with flight arrivals.”
That’s a promise about flights, not a timetable — a late-evening delay is where the published hours start to matter.
Avis prints 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM on weekdays and Enterprise 8 to 11 every day. All seven brands, with phone numbers, are on the desks page.
A covered walkway, 425 m of it, runs from the terminal to the car parks, the coach stops and the rail platform.
The drive from the airport to the Molo dei Bersaglieri
The airport has its own spur onto the A4. The last stretch is the city waterfront.
The airport describes “a dedicated 1.5 kilometre dual-carriageway link to the A4 Trieste-Venice motorway,” joining it at the Redipuglia–Monfalcone Ovest exit.
From there our routing runs about 24.6 miles to the cruise terminal — 40 minutes with no traffic, and longer whenever the A4 is busy.
Costa and TUI drivers heading for Molo IV, by the station, have a touch less: about 24.0 miles and 38 minutes.
We couldn’t confirm whether this run passes a toll booth at all. The A4 section explains why we print no toll figure.
Coming in, follow the signs for the port and the Rive, not the old-town centre — a camera gate is cheaper to avoid than to contest.
TTP takes cars into its cruise car parks only from 8 AM to 5 PM on sailing day. Its rules are on the desks page.
One run from TRS to the ship: the car against the €75 cab
Two of you, one day, collected in the arrivals area. Change any box to your own quote.
The rental, line by line
Our euro arithmetic, not a quote. The €40 day rate is assumed: Discover Cars’ Trieste Airport page showed “from $22.31” and a $72 average on Oct 3, 2026, both with a bare $. Fuel is the 25-mile run to the pier at 30 mpg, priced at €7.77 a US gallon — our conversion of MIMIT’s €2.052-a-litre petrol average for Oct 3. The airport box starts at 0% because no current page prints a percentage; VAT is assumed inside the quote; no child-seat price was found. Leaving the car in town instead of at the airport may cost a drop charge no brand prints: type it in the one-way box. Dollars at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12.
At an assumed €40 (about US$45) a day, one day and the fuel for the run come to about €46 (about US$50), our arithmetic — the fuel is about €6 of that.
The cab is €75 (about US$85), bags and tolls included. On paper the car wins by about €29.
On paper only — the car then has to go somewhere while you sail, and both places it can go cost money.
Return it in town and you’ve likely added a drop charge we couldn’t price; keep it and TTP’s parking fee lands on top.
That €75 is the fare Taxi Trieste Airport lists into central Trieste; Radio Taxi’s fixed €60 runs the other way. The rides table has both.
The train is the cheap way in — Omio, a booking site, showed regional fares from €5 — so type your fare into the train row and the comparison fills in.
For two of you heading straight to the ship, the train or the cab wins. Rent at the airport only when the car has days of work ahead.
Airport charges, deposits and automatics at Trieste: what we could pin down
Location charges, VAT and deposits all move an Italian airport quote. Only VAT came with a current, printed number.
Hertz’s Italian terms charge a “Location Service Charge” at “certain locations (e.g. airports and railway stations)” without an amount.
A May 2018 Avis Budget Italia tariff put it at 16% for airports and 12% for railway stations; eight years on, we don’t calculate with it. Maggiore’s 2025 terms say the airport or station supplement is included in the price it quotes.
So the airport box in the calculator starts at 0%, not at a guessed 16%. If your quote itemises a location charge — type it in.
Italy’s standard VAT is 22%. We assume an EU rental quote shows it already, so our calculator adds none; if yours says “IVA esclusa”, add 22%.
ACI calls it “almost impossible” to rent in Italy without a credit card. Sixt refuses prepaid cards and Maggiore wants a credit card in the renter’s name; Enterprise accepts debit or credit.
Hertz Italy adds a young-driver surcharge under 25 without printing the amount; ACI says some firms want drivers aged at least 21 or 25 and no older than 79, with a licence held a year.
We didn’t obtain a collision-damage excess or the price and supply of automatics for any Trieste desk.
Nobody in the group drives a stick? Ask about automatics when you book — not at the counter.
Discover Cars’ Trieste Airport page, read Oct 3, 2026, said from $22.31 a day (a Fiat Panda from Sicily by Car), averaging $72, with 16 suppliers and a bare $ sign; a search snippet the same day said from $33. Treat the spread between “from” and the average as the real range, not the headline.
Collect at the airport or ride in and collect at the station?
Both work, and the day of the week you land decides which.
Collect at TRS
- Counters open into the evening, every day
- You drive straight off with the bags
- About 24.6 miles to the pier, our routing
- Avis there offers a free 24-hour drop-off
Ride in, collect by Centrale
- The train or the €75 cab first
- Under a mile from desk to pier
- Shut by 12:30 on Saturday, closed or unlisted Sunday
- Best for a weekday or Saturday-morning pickup
If the car is for days on the far side of the cruise, don’t collect it on the way in at all — it would only sit.
Ride to the ship on the train or in a cab, then rent when you’re back from the cruise. The after-the-cruise page covers that end.
Booking the car at Trieste Airport
Search with the airport as the pickup and your real drop-off, so any drop charge shows up in the total.
Late flight? Check that your supplier is one of the brands with evening hours. How Discover Cars handles deposits is in our review.
- 16 suppliers listed on Oct 3
- From $22.31 a day, bare $ sign
- Drop-off fee shown in the total
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Dollars on this page come from the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 euro reference rate (about $1.12). Card rates on the day will differ.
Trieste Airport rentals: questions
How far is Trieste Airport from the cruise terminal?
About 24.6 road miles (39.6 km), roughly 40 minutes without traffic, by our routing to the Molo dei Bersaglieri. Molo IV, by the station, is about 24.0 miles.
Which car rental companies are at Trieste Airport?
The airport lists Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Locauto-Enterprise, Sicily by Car, Drivalia and Sixt, all in the arrivals area and open with flight arrivals.
Is there a train from Trieste Airport to the city?
Yes. A 425 m walkway leads to the Trieste Airport rail stop, and trains run to Trieste Centrale, under a mile from the pier. Omio, a booking site, showed regional fares from €5; we couldn’t read Trenitalia’s own.
Is a rental cheaper than a taxi from Trieste Airport to the port?
For the run alone, it can be: an assumed €40 day plus fuel is about €46, against the €75 airport cab. A drop charge or port parking can erase the gap, and we couldn’t price either.
Do Trieste Airport rentals charge an airport fee?
Hertz Italy names a location charge at airports without an amount. The only percentage we hold, 16%, is from a 2018 Avis Budget tariff, so we don’t use it. Check your quote.
