Four questions that settle the car for a Trieste sailing
Where you land, what fills the days, the headcount and the paperwork. Tap one answer per row.
The second row carries the weight.
Trieste’s pier is close to everything a walker needs — the station, the old town, Piazza Unità.
A car starts to matter only when the plan leaves town — and more so when it leaves Italy.
Landing in Venice or Ljubljana tilts the answer too, since those are long drives rather than short transfers.
The train, the cab and the walk along the Rive
Every ride in this table gets you from the airport or the station to the ship without parking anything.

Prices from Radio Taxi Trieste and Trieste Airport pages. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Taxi Trieste Airport, which runs the rank outside Arrivals, lists €75 into central Trieste with bags and motorway tolls included, on a tariff page with no date. That’s about US$85 a cab, not a head.
Radio Taxi Trieste charges a fixed €60 from the central zone to Trieste Airport, supplements included — about US$65, so the trip back to the airport costs less than the trip in.
A 425 m covered walkway joins the airport terminal to the car parks, the bus station and the “Trieste Airport” rail stop. The airport’s 2019 release put the train to Trieste at 23 to 29 minutes; that’s old, so check the current timetable.
The airport’s train page lists 6 high-speed and 48 regional trains a day, plus two to and from Ljubljana — plenty for a ship day. We couldn’t read Trenitalia’s fare; Omio, a booking site, showed regional trains from €5 and a fastest run of 28 minutes in October 2026.
From Centrale to the ship is about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) by our routing, along the waterfront Rive. No official page gives a walking time. So we won’t.
With bags, a cab from the station rank starts at the €4 flag fall plus the €2.40 port supplement — €6.40 (about US$7) before the meter moves, our arithmetic.
APT’s coach 51 runs from the airport to the coach terminal beside the Silos, next to Trieste Centrale, per a SISSA visitor page; we couldn’t read its fare or journey time — a cheap option we can’t price.
Uber’s Trieste Airport page offers Uber Taxi and in the same breath says taxis aren’t available for airport pickup, so we treat rideshare there as unconfirmed. Don’t plan around an app.
Price the car against these numbers, not against nothing.
An International Driving Permit for Italy, in the Embassy’s own words
Both official sources we read, American and Italian, ask for the permit or for a sworn translation of your licence.
The US Embassy in Rome: “Americans visiting Italy as tourists and intending to drive should obtain an International Driving Permit before leaving the U.S.”; it also accepts a US licence with an official Italian translation.
ACI’s document list says a non-EU driver needs an international driving permit or a sworn Italian translation of the licence. Maggiore’s terms ask for the permit or a notarised translation whenever the licence was issued outside Europe.
Three sources, one answer — a US licence on its own isn’t enough at an Italian counter.
ACI adds that Italy accepts both the 1949 Geneva permit, valid a year, and the 1968 Vienna permit, valid three.
The State Department says to get it from AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance and to carry your US licence with it.
It’s a form and a photo at home — not a task for the arrivals hall.
We couldn’t confirm whether Slovenia or Croatia asks a US licence holder for an International Driving Permit. If Slovenia or Croatia is on the plan, ask the issuing office before you fly.
Restricted-traffic zones and fines that arrive by post
Italy doesn’t pull drivers over at its limited-traffic zones. It photographs them.
Italian historic centres guard limited-traffic zones (ZTL) with cameras that photograph plates; Hertz’s Italian terms say they exist in “most historical Italian cities”.
The US Embassy says nobody stops you: the fine comes by post, up to 360 days later, and for a rental the company “normally provides the name and address of the person renting the car”.
That’s the surprise for Americans — the letter turns up months after you’re home.
ACI’s sheet puts the ZTL fine at €76 to €306; a second ACI sheet in English says €81 to €326. The top of that range is about US$365, before anything the rental company adds for passing it on.
We didn’t check Trieste’s own ZTL map or hours on the city’s site, so we can’t tell you which streets near the Rive are gated. Assume the old centre is gated until a sign says otherwise.
Set the sat-nav to the Saba Silos or the station square, not to an address inside the centre.
Italian road rules that catch visiting drivers
A short list. Read it before the first roundabout, not after the first fine.
ACI’s limits: 130 km/h on motorways (up to 150 where signed), 110 on main roads, 90 on secondary roads and 50 in towns (70 where signed); in rain, 110 and 90.
Dipped headlights go on outside built-up areas, day and night — on the open coast road too, in broad daylight.
The limit is 0.5 g/l, and zero for anyone licensed under three years or aged up to 21; fines run €527 to €6,000. Zero means zero for a newly licensed driver.
A legal publisher’s summary of the 2024 reform puts a first handheld-phone offence at €250 to €1,000 plus licence points and a suspension; we couldn’t load the official text.
Children up to 1.5 m tall ride in an approved restraint. Carry a warning triangle (set it at least 50 m back) and wear a high-visibility vest when you step out on a road outside town.
Stopped by police, a foreign driver pays on the spot or leaves a deposit, or the car can be held for up to 60 days. Keep some euros in cash, not just a card.
Age limits, credit cards and deposits are on the airport page — bring a credit card in the driver’s name, not a debit card.
When a car helps in Trieste and when it just waits
Two lists, one decision. Count which side your week falls on.
Rent when
- You’re heading for Piran, Postojna or the Collio hills
- Five or more of you, with big bags, landing at the airport
- You fly into Venice or Ljubljana and want the drive on your terms
- You’ll tour for days before or after the ship
Skip it when
- You land at Trieste Airport and go straight to the ship
- Your days are the old town and the waterfront
- The driver has no permit and no time to get one
- Nobody wants to pay for a car that sits in TTP’s car park all week
Miramare is the in-between case — a short hop up the coast by car, and also on buses 6 and 36.
If that’s the only day out, the bus does it. The castle section has the hours.
If the answer is yes: booking for the days you’ll drive
Rent for the touring days only — and pick the car up near where those days start.
For an airport arrival that’s the arrivals hall; for a mid-trip day out, the station desks. The desk cards have both.
How Discover Cars handles deposits and coverage is in our review.
- Station and airport desks together
- Bare $ sign on prices when we looked
- Many companies side by side
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Our dollar figures follow the ECB reference rate for Oct 2, 2026, roughly $1.12 a euro. Expect your card’s rate to differ a little.
Car or no car in Trieste: questions
Do I need a car for a cruise from Trieste?
Usually not for the transfer. Trieste Centrale is about 0.8 road miles from the cruise terminal, the airport has its own train stop, and the airport’s taxi company lists €75 into central Trieste. A car earns its place for day trips into the Karst or Slovenia.
How do I get from Trieste Airport to the cruise port without a car?
Walk the 425 m covered walkway to the airport’s train stop and take a train to Trieste Centrale, which the airport put at 23 to 29 minutes in 2019. From Centrale it’s under a mile to the terminal, on foot or by cab.
Do Americans need an International Driving Permit in Italy?
Yes. The US Embassy in Rome says Americans who intend to drive should get one before leaving the US, and ACI asks non-EU drivers for a permit or a sworn Italian translation of the licence.
Is there Uber at Trieste Airport?
We couldn’t confirm it. Uber’s Trieste Airport page lists Uber Taxi but also says taxis aren’t available for pickup there. The airport’s own taxi rank runs 8 AM to midnight.
What is the taxi fare from Trieste port to the airport?
Radio Taxi Trieste lists a fixed €60 from the central zone to the airport, supplements included, on a tariff page dated July 14, 2025.
Does Trieste have a ZTL?
We didn’t check Trieste’s own ZTL rules on the city’s site. Italian historic centres generally use camera gates, and the US Embassy says the fine goes to the rental company, which normally passes on your name and address.
