Pre-Cruise Hotels · Trieste

The Night Before, Ranked

Nineteen hotels for a Trieste cruise, from Piazza Unità to Barcola and the airport, scored on what gets you to the Stazione Marittima, not on reviews. None of them publishes a ride to the ship or a cruise-parking rate, so the walk decides most of it and a stated breakfast the rest.

The Podium

The top three

Duchi d'Aosta wins on a pool, Harry's downstairs and a walk of about 0.2 miles to the terminal. Nuovo Albergo Centro is a point behind, on a breakfast it says is included when you book direct. Savoia Excelsior is the closest door of all, about 0.1 miles on foot, and trails only for want of a pool.

The Nineteen

The nineteen, in order

Narrow the list by what your night needs, then tick up to three to compare side by side — the order is ours, the shortlist is yours.

Why nineteen, not twenty? We checked 22 hotels and ranked only the ones that are open and publish enough to score. Three didn’t clear that bar, and we didn’t pad the list to reach a round number — the three are here.

Taxi Trieste Airport, which runs the rank outside Arrivals, lists €75 into central Trieste with bags and motorway tolls included. Going back, Radio Taxi Trieste prints a fixed €60 from the central zone to the airport, supplements included. On the meter it's €4 (about US$4) for the first 77 m, €0.10 (about US$0.11) every 77 m after, plus €2.40 (about US$3) to or from the port.

A 425 m raised walkway joins the terminal to the Trieste Airport rail stop. The airport's 2019 release put trains to Trieste at 23 to 29 minutes; today's page lists 6 high-speed and 48 interregional trains a day. Trieste Centrale is about 0.8 road miles from the cruise terminal by our routing.

Bus 51 to Trieste

TRS
About €4.50 to €5.00 (about US$5–6), as hotels print it

APT's line 51 runs from the airport into Trieste, ending at the coach terminal by the silos beside Trieste Centrale. We couldn't read the operator's own fare page; NH prints €4.50 and about an hour, and The Modernist about €5.00.

Cruise-line transfer

VCE · TRS
Price not published

Holland America transfers from Venice Marco Polo only, not from Treviso, and shows no price on its port page. Princess offers airport-to-ship transfers without a price on the page we read. We didn't read MSC's, Norwegian's or Costa's transfer prices.

Driving from Venice Marco Polo

VCE
About 93 road miles, our routing

Our routing puts Marco Polo about 92.9 miles (149.5 km) and 1 hr 46 min from the Stazione Marittima with no traffic. Holland America says 94 miles and about 2 hours, and Princess's blog says to plan for about 2.5 hours.

Splurge
Want it grander?

The splurge list, told straight

These nineteen are ranked for an easy sail morning, not for the room. Trieste’s grand hotels happen to sit on the waterfront by the terminal, which helps. Michelin’s October 2025 list gave no Keys to any hotel in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and we found no Forbes rating near Trieste, so the splurge list leans on what each place offers.

See the splurge list
At a Glance

How far each pick sits from the ship

Every distance here ends at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri — Esri’s point for the terminal’s address, not a gangway. Hotels in the centre are measured on foot by our routing, because that’s how most people will cover it. The coast and airport hotels get road miles with no traffic — a floor, not a promise.

Four of the nineteen are on or just off Piazza Unità and six in Borgo Teresiano. Four sit by the station or below San Giusto, three along the Barcola and Miramare coast and two out at Sistiana and the airport — a drive, not a walk. Sailing with Costa or TUI? Their parking is at Molo IV, by Trieste Centrale, so the station-side hotels sit closest to the car park, not to the terminal.

How We Score

The Night-Before Score, out of 100

Five things make a Trieste night before easy or hard, and in this town the walk does most of the work. We score each one only from what the hotel publishes on its own site or its brand’s.

If a hotel doesn’t say it, it scores zero there. Booking sites don’t count — a few room counts come from the region’s GO! 2025 listing, and we say so where they do. A distance to “the port”, “the harbour” or Molo IV isn’t a distance to the cruise terminal.

30pts

Distance to the ship

By band, from the Stazione Marittima: Piazza Unità and Cavana 30; Borgo Teresiano 25; the station side and the hill 20; Barcola and the Miramare coast 15; Sistiana and the airport 10.

25pts

Getting to the ship

A transfer the hotel runs or arranges, with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. A walk the hotel prints at half a mile or less 15. A named partner 10. Nobody in Trieste scores here.

20pts

Parking while you sail

A published rate to leave the car while you cruise 20; offered, price unpublished 14. Garage rates by the day don’t count unless the hotel says they cover a cruise — none does.

10pts

Free breakfast

A breakfast the hotel says is included scores 10. Two of the nineteen say so.

15pts

The evening before

Pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3. No beach points here.

Ties are broken in order: the lower published parking rate, any stated way to the ship, free breakfast, parking on site, the shorter distance to the Stazione Marittima by our routing, the lower guest parking price, then the alphabet. Urban Hotel and James Joyce tie on 30, and our walking distance splits them by about 20 m. Five tie on 28: Tre Merli goes first on its free breakfast, then NH, The Modernist, the Continentale and the DoubleTree by distance. B&B HOTEL, Colombia and Italia tie on 20, again split by distance.

What’s left out is deliberate. Room rates change daily, so they aren’t scored — and neither are review scores. Italy’s regional star categories are on each page where we found one; they don’t score.

Add the tourist tax before you compare rates. The City of Trieste’s 2026 table sets it by stars: €3.80 (about US$4) a person a night at a 5-star, €3.30 at a 4-star, €3.00 at a 3-star, €2.30 (about US$3) at a 2-star and €1.80 (about US$2) at a 1-star, for up to five consecutive nights. Two people in a 4-star for one night pay €6.60 (about US$7). Exemptions apply — check the city’s rules.

Parking Math

Where the car goes while you sail

No hotel in our nineteen publishes a price to leave the car while you sail. Here’s what is published, from the least certain to the official.

At the hotels. Daily rates, not cruise deals. Hotel Italia’s garage comes with a driver who collects and returns the car, at €30.00 per 24 hours. NH prints €30 a day in its building, plus two garages 150 m away at €15 (about US$17) and about €13 — and the Victoria gets Garage Saba for €17.00. Miramare, Tre Merli and Hotel Major park guests free. None says a car can stay a week while you sail.

In the old town. Park San Giusto is the garage the Cavana hotels use. Urban Hotel Design prints €24.00 (about US$25) per 24 hours and James Joyce €25 (about US$30) a day for a reserved space; The Modernist gives €5.00 overnight, with day rates up to €22.00 (about US$25). The calculator uses Urban’s figure — a hotel-printed city rate, not a cruise package.

At the port. Trieste Terminal Passeggeri (TTP) runs the only official cruise parking and takes bookings only on its site. MSC guests park under cover at Via Gian Rinaldo Carli 8–10, for cars up to 2 m high and 5 m long. Costa and TUI guests use the Molo IV car park by Trieste Centrale. A free shuttle runs to the terminal, drop-off is 08:00 to 17:00, and pick-up after the cruise 07:00 to 13:00. TTP shows prices only inside the booking portal, which we couldn’t read, so we don’t print one.

Park San Giusto, €24.00 per 24 hours as Urban Hotel Design prints it—

Our total counts each cruise night plus one day at the €24.00 Urban Hotel Design prints for Park San Giusto. Ask the garage whether it takes a car for a week before you count on it.

Every option side by side: Trieste cruise parking, compared.

What we checked and left out

We checked 22 hotels; nineteen were open and published enough to score. Two hotels we couldn’t rank, Seven Historical Suites and Castello di Spessa, are on the splurge list with five of these nineteen.

HotelWhy it isn’t ranked
Greif Hotel & Spa (Greif Maria Theresia), BarcolaA 5-star on the regional register with an indoor pool, but we couldn't find its own website, and its open status rests on a Booking.com listing. Not ranked until it can be confirmed.
Seven Historical Suites, Borgo TeresianoEight suites in Palazzo Terni, known to us only from Michelin's listing — too little to score. It's on the splurge list, labelled that way.
Castello di Spessa, Capriva del FriuliA castle estate in the Collio, about 35 road miles from the ship, documented only by a booking platform. On the splurge list, not ranked.
Starhotels SavoiaThe same hotel as the Savoia Excelsior Palace, ranked above — not a second property.
Falisia Resort, PortopiccoloThe Portopiccolo resort now trades as Tivoli Portopiccolo Sistiana, ranked above.

Trieste Airport, at Ronchi dei Legionari, is the close one — about 24.6 road miles (39.6 km) from the Stazione Marittima by our routing, roughly 40 minutes with no traffic. the airport’s taxi company lists €75 into central Trieste, bags and tolls included, and trains leave from the airport’s own rail stop.

Venice Marco Polo is the big one, about 92.9 road miles away, and Holland America runs its transfers from there. The Getting There table shows what every hotel publishes; the airport page has the train, the taxi and the drive from Venice and Ljubljana.

FAQ

Pre-cruise hotel FAQ

Which hotel ranks first for the night before a Trieste cruise?

On our scoring it's the Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta on Piazza Unità: a pool, Harry's Bar downstairs, and about 0.2 miles on foot to the Stazione Marittima by our routing. Nuovo Albergo Centro, with breakfast included on a direct booking, is a point behind, and the Savoia Excelsior, the closest door at about 0.1 miles, is third.

Where does a Trieste cruise leave from?

Trieste has one cruise terminal in town: the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri, run by Trieste Terminal Passeggeri (TTP), by Piazza Unità. Holland America and MSC both give that address. Costa's and TUI's parking pages say "Molo IV", where the car park sits about 100 m from Trieste Centrale, and don't say whether their ships berth there too. MSC also sails from Monfalcone, a separate port it lists on its own page. Your documents name yours.

Can I walk from a Trieste hotel to the cruise terminal?

From the centre, yes — our walking routes to the Stazione Marittima run about 0.1 to 0.9 miles for fourteen of the nineteen. No hotel prints a walk of half a mile or less to the cruise terminal, so none scores a walk; with heavy bags, a short taxi is the easier way.

Can I leave my car at a Trieste hotel while I cruise?

Not at a published cruise rate. No hotel we checked sells park-and-cruise. Several print daily garage rates, such as Hotel Italia's driver-run garage at €30.00 per 24 hours or Garage Saba at €17.00 via the Victoria, without saying they run for a week. TTP's own cruise parking is the official option — booked on its site, with prices shown only inside the booking portal.

How much is the tourist tax in Trieste?

It goes by star category. The City of Trieste's 2026 table charges €3.80 a person a night at a 5-star, €3.30 at a 4-star, €3.00 at a 3-star, €2.30 at a 2-star and €1.80 at a 1-star, for up to five consecutive nights in the same place. Exemptions apply — check the city's rules before you count on one. Hotels outside the city, in Duino Aurisina or Ronchi dei Legionari, follow their own town's rules.

Is a "Trieste (Venice)" cruise anywhere near Venice?

About two hours away. Holland America markets the port as "Trieste (Venice)" and puts its terminal about 94 miles (150 km) and 2 hours from Venice Marco Polo; Princess says "Trieste (for Venice)". If you want a night in Venice too, do it before the drive, not on sail morning.

Which Trieste cruise hotels have a free airport shuttle?

None of the nineteen runs an airport shuttle of its own. Hotel Italia and Urban Hotel Design book taxis for guests, without printing a fare. Taxi Trieste Airport lists €75 into central Trieste with bags and tolls included, and trains run from the airport's own rail stop to Trieste Centrale.

Why don't you show room prices?

Rates move every day and jump in summer. Any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it — a guess, not a fact. We rank on what holds still: the walk to the ship, the ride, parking, breakfast and the evening.
