Miramare Castle: the short one, 12 minutes up the coast
The castle on the point is the closest drive here, and the only stop whose own site lists a city bus route.
Miramare is the closest of these — about 4.4 miles (7.1 km) from the Molo dei Bersaglieri, by our routing.
Miramare Castle opens daily 9 AM to 7 PM (last tickets 6:30); its park is free, 8 to 6 from Oct 1–14, 8 to 5 for the rest of October and 8 to 4 in November and December. The park’s winter closing is early — 4 PM by November.
Parking is a few unattended pay spaces off the SR14 coast road; buses 6 and 36 stop at Bivio di Miramare, and Miramare station is 150 m away.
Few spaces, no attendant. Arrive early, not at noon in summer.
The castle’s page didn’t show a ticket price, so we print none.
Delfino Verde boats leave the Rive for Muggia all year, and in summer for Grignano (by Miramare), Sistiana and Grado — in season, a car-free way in.
With the bus that close, a car is optional here. Rent for Miramare only if it’s one stop of several.
Grotta Gigante on the Karst: booked tours, 500 steps each way
One of the few sights here that prints every number: tour times, prices, steps, temperature.
Up on the plateau behind the city, the cave is about 5.8 miles (9.3 km) from the pier — 16 minutes on empty roads.
Grotta Gigante runs guided tours at 9, 10, 11, 12, 2, 3 and 4; it opens daily March to August and Tuesday to Sunday September to February, and shuts Dec 25 and Jan 1.
Tickets: €15 adult, €12 reduced, €8 for ages 6 to 18, under-6s free; booking is compulsory on +39 040 327312. In dollars, the adult ticket is about US$17.
The tour takes an hour, 500 steps down and 500 back up, at 11°C, and the parking is free — bring a layer, not just a T-shirt.
A family with two children aged 6 to 18 pays the €6 child rate, not €8, so two adults and two children come to €42 (about US$45), our arithmetic.
There’s no 1 o’clock tour — miss the noon slot and you wait until 2.
Book the cave before you book the car.
From September to February it’s shut on Mondays — check that against your disembark day.
Aquileia and Cividale: the longer Friulian drives
West along the coast, then inland: these are the drives that justify a full day’s rental.
The basilica town of Aquileia is about 32.5 miles (52.3 km) west of the pier, roughly 56 min by our routing.
We couldn’t read the Basilica of Aquileia’s hours or prices; its English site returned an error, so plan the visit around the basilica’s own notice board, not ours.
Cividale del Friuli is further — about 46.2 miles and 1 hr 14 min. We read no hours or prices for Cividale del Friuli’s sights.
Either one makes a full day once you count the drive back. Pair Aquileia with the airport on the way in — both lie west of the city.
The Collio wine hills around Cormons
White-wine country on the border, and the trip where the driver needs a plan as much as the car does.
The Collio is the Italian side of the Gorizia hills, running to the Slovenian border, with most of its vineyards around Cormons; it’s mostly white wine, Friulano and Ribolla Gialla among them, per Wikipedia.
Cormons, the centre of it, is about 34.6 miles (55.7 km) from the pier, roughly 51 minutes by our routing to the town square.
The Consorzio Collio sits at Via Gramsci 2 in Cormons; we read no winery hours or tasting prices.
Ring a winery ahead — don’t just turn up.
Italy’s drink-drive limit is 0.5 g/l, and zero for newer drivers; the road-rules list has the fines.
Tastings and a hire car don’t mix — choose a designated driver, not a spittoon strategy.
Piran and Postojna: crossing into Slovenia in an Italian rental
Slovenia is closer than Venice. The rental agreement decides whether you can go.
Hertz Italy: “You may only drive the vehicle in the country of rental” unless permitted. Sixt’s Italian terms say use abroad may be barred depending on the car category and booking, with the limits set out in the contract; no fee is printed.
Ask before you book — not at the counter, and not after the border.
Piran is about 22.9 miles (36.9 km) from the pier — around 46 minutes on empty roads.
Piran’s old town is “largely closed to traffic.” The Fornače garage charges €3.20 per started hour (€32 over 10 hours), Arze €2 an hour (€20 over 10), and an electric minibus to Tartini Square costs €1. Four hours in Fornače comes to €12.80 (about US$14), our arithmetic.
Postojna Cave is about 29.3 miles away, 43 minutes by our routing. Postojna Cave tours run hourly from 9 AM to 5 PM in October and November 2026; we couldn’t read a single-ticket price, only packages from €34.90 to €60.50 (about US$40 to US$70).
Our routing to Postojna uses the Slovenian motorway, so plan on the vignette: €16 (about US$18) for a week, tied to your plate. The vignette section has the fine and the plate rule.
Fuel for the Postojna round trip is about €15 (about US$17) at 30 mpg, our arithmetic on Italian prices.
Slovenia keeps dipped headlights on all day and its own speed limits — the arrivals page lists them. Read them before the border, not after it.
A day on the Karst in euros, line by line
Two adults, one day, the station desk and Grotta Gigante. Every box is editable.
The rental, line by line
A sum in euros, ours, not a quote. We set the day rate at €40, an assumption sitting between Discover Cars’ $22.31 “from” price and its $72 average at the airport on Oct 3, 2026 (both with a bare $). Fuel is the 12-mile round trip from the pier at 30 mpg and €7.77 a US gallon, our conversion of the ministry’s Oct 3 petrol average. The cave line is Grotta Gigante’s €15 adult ticket; set it to €12 or €8 for reduced and 6–18 tickets. VAT is taken as already inside the quote, station charges start at 0% for want of a printed figure, and we hold no child-seat price. Converted at the ECB rate of Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 a euro.
Two adults, a station car and the cave come to about €73 (about US$80), our arithmetic: €40 of assumed rent, €30 of tickets and a few euros of fuel.
Swap in Piran and the tickets become parking. Postojna adds the vignette and a ticket price we couldn’t read.
Change the rate to your quote, then compare it with the tour price on the right.
Booking a day car at the station, not the airport
For a day out from the ship, use the station desks — not the airport, a long run each way.
Check the counter’s hours first — the checker on the desks page shows the Saturday and Sunday gaps.
For Slovenia, tell the company before you pay and get the permission written on the agreement.
- Avis and Enterprise by Trieste Centrale
- Showed “from $26.31” with a bare $ on Oct 3
- Check cross-border rules per supplier
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Every dollar figure here uses the euro’s ECB reference rate on Oct 2, 2026, near $1.12. Your bank’s rate on the day won’t match it exactly.
