Check the day of the week before anything else
Get the day wrong and no amount of driving fixes it — a closed gate is a closed gate, not a delay.
Oak Alley assigns Big House times when you buy, sells a limited number and encourages booking ahead; Laura recommends reservations and doesn’t guarantee walk-ins.
Book both before you leave town — a car is no help if the 2:20 tour is full.
Off the ship in the morning, you can still aim for Laura’s last tour and an Oak Alley Big House slot that afternoon, if one’s left. Whitney, with last entry at 3 and two to three hours to give it, is the tight one.
A day’s rental from a downtown desk, gas included, runs about $71 at our assumed rate, and River Road tours with transportation start at $89 to $131 an adult. For two, the car plus Oak Alley and Laura comes to about $191 against $262 on the tour; on your own, it’s a wash — so pick by who wants to drive, not by price.
The car makes sense if
- There are at least two of you
- Whitney is on your list, or two plantations of your choosing
- You’re flying out of MSY afterward
- A swamp boat fits into the same day
The tour makes sense if
- You’re traveling solo
- An hour each way at the wheel appeals to nobody
- You’d rather skip the timed tickets and tour slots
- The two plantations the tour chooses suit you fine

Prices, tour times and closed days from each site’s own page, Sept 28, 2026; Oak Alley adds sales tax. Distances are our OpenStreetMap estimates from the Erato Street terminal with no traffic or stops, and from MSY, from the airport’s reference point. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Laura, Oak Alley and St. Joseph share Vacherie on the west bank, a few miles apart, with Whitney just downriver in Wallace — the reason two in a day is easy.
Houmas House is across the river. Destrehan is on the city’s side, not the far bank, and 10 minutes from MSY by its own count.
San Francisco Plantation in Garyville closed to visitors when Marathon ended its operation on Jan 1, 2022, and we found nothing saying it has reopened.
Evergreen, in Edgard, gives guided tours by reservation according to the River Parishes tourism office — its booking page wouldn’t load for us, so check with it directly.
A dead heat for one, and a clear win from two
Set the travelers, the base rate and the admissions to your trip. Another tour’s total goes in the last row.
The rental, line by line
Sums of our own, not a quote: we assume $50 a day, while on Sept 28, 2026, MSY rentals on Discover Cars started “from $37” a day, and the site cautions that US prices can omit certain taxes and surcharges. Your quote’s rate replaces ours. Pick up at MSY and the airport’s $7.95-a-day facility charge applies, plus an 11% access fee we’ve assumed, since no company publishes one. At MSY the tax is 14.75%, our sum of Louisiana’s rate, Jefferson Parish’s, the airport district’s and the 3% rental tax; downtown it’s 13%, from Louisiana, Orleans Parish and the rental tax. Louisiana has no Florida-style per-day surcharge. Gas is 30 mpg at $4.01, which AAA gave as the New Orleans average on Sept 27, 2026. It covers about 111 miles, downtown to Oak Alley, Laura and Whitney and back, by our estimate. Admissions start at $30 for Oak Alley and $30 for Laura per person, so lower them for kids or swap in other plantations; the tour row is Viator’s “from” price with admissions included.
Alone, you’d spend about $131 in the car against the tour’s $131.
That’s even, not a saving.
Every extra person tilts it. Two of you keep about $71, three about $142 — and the car can add Whitney or a swamp boat the tour leaves out.
From a downtown counter to Vacherie and back by six
Collect the car downtown
The Hilton Riverside counter opens at 8 on weekdays and 9 on weekends; Enterprise on Canal Street opens at 8 every day.
Laura, in time for 10:00
About 52 miles and 1 hr 09 min with no traffic, by our estimate. Laura runs guided tours only.
Oak Alley
It’s three and a half miles up the road. Your ticket carries the Big House time; use the rest for the oak alley itself and the grounds.
Whitney
Five miles back downriver from Laura. Give it two to three hours — last entry is 3, and it doesn’t open on Tuesdays.
Back in the city
Return it before the counter closes, or keep it overnight if you sail tomorrow and bring it back in the morning.
If you won’t drive: tours, and the plantation that says Uber serves it
Laura’s transportation page says no streetcar, train or bus reaches the plantations.
Rideshare is patchy, too. Laura calls itself “one hour from the city center and beyond the TAXI, UBER or LYFT service areas” and advises against a ride out unless the driver waits; Whitney says rideshare is “not reliable for return trips” and suggests driving or a tour.
Destrehan is the exception. It says Uber and Lyft serve it both ways, and it’s the closest plantation to the city — if one house is enough and you won’t have a car, go there.
| Tour | Price and length | Source |

| Gray Line, swamp boat and Oak Alley or Whitney | From $131 an adult; about 7¾ hours | listing |
| Viator, Oak Alley and Laura with transportation | From $131 an adult; about 8 hours; hotel pickup; all admissions included | listing |
| Cajun Encounters, Whitney and Oak Alley | From $100; 8 hours; daily except Tuesday, when Whitney is closed | listing |
| Viator, one plantation and a swamp tour | From $111 an adult; about 8½ hours; hotel pickup and drop-off | listing |
Adult prices, from each operator’s page or its Viator listing. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Read a “tour” listing carefully. Laura’s own ticket on Viator, from $32.06, is the guided house tour and nothing more — you still drive yourself.
We couldn’t confirm any cruise line selling a plantation or swamp tour that ends at MSY.
Is the swamp tour’s hotel pickup worth paying for?
| Operator | Drive yourself | With hotel pickup | Pickup adds | Tour | From the ship |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honey Island Swamp ToursSlidell, east | $39.99 | $69.99 | $30 | 2 hours | 38 mi |
| Cajun Pride Swamp ToursLaPlace, on the way to River Road | $35 | $60 | $25 | About 1.5 hours | On I-10 west, toward River Road |
| Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours, boatMarrero, south | $32 | $62 | $30 | 1.5 hours | 17 mi |
| Airboat Adventures, pontoonLafitte, south | $35 | $65 | $30 | 1.5 hours | 22 mi |
Adult prices from each operator’s own page, Sept 28, 2026. Airboat Adventures’ pickup price is our sum: its $35 pontoon tour plus the $30 a person it charges to collect you. We didn’t measure Cajun Pride’s distance. Checked Sept 28, 2026
For a swamp tour on its own, sometimes yes. Two of you at Honey Island pay $140 with the pickup, against about $147 for a day’s car at our assumed rate plus two drive-out tickets.
Take the van.
At four, the sums flip — $280 for pickups against about $227 with the car.
Pairing the swamp with a plantation is where a car really pays. Cajun Pride sits in LaPlace, just off I-10 on the way to River Road, so a morning boat and an afternoon at Oak Alley or Laura need only the one rental.
Hurricane Ida repairs closed the Barataria Preserve’s visitor center and most of its trails, the Bayou Coquille boardwalk among them, on Feb 2, 2026, for about two years; only the Twin Canals trail is open.
The Park Service sends visitors to the Wetland Trace Boardwalk at the Louisiana Wetland Education Center in Jean Lafitte instead, at $10 an adult.
Closer to MSY than to the ship
MSY is about 41 miles from Oak Alley and 34 from Whitney by our estimates, against 55 and 47 from the terminal — so the airport is on the way, not a detour.
An evening flight leaves room for one plantation.
Collect the car downtown the morning the ship docks, drive upriver and hand it back at MSY. Ask about a one-way charge when you book, since we found none published for this route.
Houmas House keeps the latest hours of them all, which makes it the one for an afternoon off the ship.
No car? Destrehan is 10 minutes from MSY by its own count, stores luggage free during the tour and has Uber and Lyft both ways.
The morning off the ship, step by step: renting after the cruise.
The day between landing and sailing
Fly in two days early and the day in between belongs to River Road.
Rent from a downtown desk that morning, then return it that evening — or first thing on sail day, if the counter opens early enough for your boarding time, not just for breakfast.
A weekend sailing makes that last part tricky.
The Hilton Riverside desk shuts at 2 PM Saturday and 1 PM Sunday, so check your drop-off time against it before you commit.
Reserve the tour slots, then the car
Search downtown New Orleans for a same-day return, or MSY if a flight comes next. Lock in the plantation tour times first, the car second — a rental is easier to move than a 2:20 slot.
- Pick-up: downtown New Orleans
- No charge to cancel 48+ hours ahead
- Any one-way fee counted in the total
- Return: that desk, or MSY before a flight
Plantations, swamps and a cruise: common questions
Can you Uber to Oak Alley or Laura Plantation?
Getting there is possible; getting back is the trouble. Laura says it sits beyond taxi, Uber and Lyft service areas and advises against one unless the driver waits, and Whitney calls rideshare unreliable for return trips. No public transit runs to the plantations.
Rent a car or book a plantation tour from New Orleans: which is cheaper?
With two or more of you, usually the car. A day from a downtown desk with gas is about $71 at an assumed $50 a day, and Oak Alley and Laura are about $30 each a person, while Viator’s Oak Alley and Laura tour with transportation starts at $131 a person. For a solo traveler it’s roughly a tie.
Is Whitney Plantation open on Tuesday?
No — Whitney closes every Tuesday, and on a list of holidays that includes Dec 20 to 25. Cajun Encounters’ Whitney and Oak Alley tour skips Tuesdays for the same reason.
How far is Oak Alley from the New Orleans cruise terminal?
Roughly 55 miles, an hour and a quarter on empty roads, by our route estimate. It’s about 41 miles from MSY, so it fits on the way to an evening flight.
Which plantation can I visit after my cruise with luggage?
Destrehan. It stores luggage free during the tour, says Uber and Lyft serve it in both directions, and puts itself 10 minutes from MSY.
Is the Barataria Preserve boardwalk open?
Mostly not. The Park Service shut the visitor center and most trails on Feb 2, 2026, for about two years of repairs, leaving only Twin Canals open, and it suggests the $10 Wetland Trace Boardwalk in Jean Lafitte instead.
