A hotel lobby, a $14 cab from the ship
Take the cab to the Hilton Riverside, not the airport. Avis and Budget share a counter in its lobby, about 0.4 miles from Julia Street (MSY is 15 to 17 miles out), and both brands’ listings tie it to the cruise port — though on weekends it closes early, at 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.
Hilton Riverside lobby, 2 Poydras St
- Avis and Budget; Budget’s listing says “services Cruise Ship Port”
- 8 to 6 on weekdays, 9 to 2 Saturday, 9 to 1 Sunday
- 0.4 miles from Julia Street and 0.6 from Erato Street, our estimates
- No airport facility charge, and 13% tax by our sum
- Reserve it, and note the weekend closing
MSY’s rental car center
- Ten companies, National and Alamo among them — the only place those two rent
- The city’s flat cab fare: $36 for one or two, $15 a person for three or more
- A $7.95 facility charge each day, an access fee, and 14.75% tax (our sum)
- Avis there runs 5 AM to 2 AM
- The airport your flight home leaves from
The city sets the cab rate to or from a cruise ship: $14 for one of you, $8 a person for two or more, bags included, or the meter fare.
That makes the Hilton Riverside a short, cheap hop, and the airport a 15-to-17-mile ride you’d only take for a reason.
Sunday afternoon is one reason, since the lobby counter has shut by then. Wanting National or Alamo is another.
If you’ll hand the car back at MSY later, we found no company publishing a charge for that downtown-to-airport return, so check the one-way terms on your contract before you drive off.
Mississippi in an hour, Florida in about four
The coast is the easy win — about an hour and 20 minutes to Bay St. Louis and under two to Biloxi, by our estimates, with no tolls on the way.
Cajun country is 2 hr 41 min each way, which makes it a long day, not a day trip. Two nights is kinder.
| Where | From the Erato Street terminal | Before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Bay St. Louis, Mississippi | 63 miles, about 1 hr 19 min | Old Town sits right on the water. Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service stops here too, on its twice-a-day run from New Orleans to Mobile, with Gulfport and Biloxi on the same line. |
| Biloxi and Ocean Springs | 92 miles, about 1 hr 48 min | Casinos in Biloxi; Ocean Springs a few minutes over the bay. Mississippi has no toll roads to worry about. |
| Houma | 59 miles, about 1 hr 18 min | Bayou country, south of the city. |
| Baton Rouge | 83 miles, about 1 hr 41 min | The Old State Capitol costs nothing to see: Tuesday to Friday 10 to 4, Saturday 9 to 3, and closed Sunday and Monday. |
| Breaux Bridge and Lafayette | 137 miles, about 2 hr 41 min | Vermilionville, the living-history village in Lafayette, is $10 an adult, open 10 to 4 Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays. Breaux Bridge comes a few miles sooner. |
| Avery Island | Past Lafayette; not measured | Tabasco’s tour: $15.50 an adult, 9 to 4 every day. |
| Grand Isle | 111 miles, about 2 hr 35 min | The state park is open, $3 a person, with the gate open 7 AM to 9 PM. On the way, the LA 1 bridge at Leeville is $4.50 southbound — 90 cents more without a GeauxPass — and takes no cash at all. |
| Natchez, Mississippi | 177 miles, about 3 hr 26 min | One $40 adult ticket covers Longwood and Stanton Hall, with tours on the hour from 9 to 3. Stay over. |
| Gulf Shores, Alabama | 191 miles, about 3 hr 50 min | Alabama’s beaches. Stay over. |
| Pensacola Beach, Florida | 211 miles, about 4 hr 05 min | Gulf Islands National Seashore charges $25 a car, good for 7 days, and no cash. A one-way into Florida needs its own quote. |
Our route estimates from the Erato Street terminal, using OpenStreetMap’s routing with empty roads and no stops — leaving New Orleans takes longer than that. Hours and prices come from the attractions themselves. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Rather go upriver? The plantations are about an hour out, and they get a page of their own.
Is anything tolled out here?
Almost nothing you’ll drive charges a toll — the Crescent City Connection, the river bridge downtown, stopped charging in March 2013.
I-10 is free east to the Mississippi coast and west to Baton Rouge and Lafayette, and Mississippi has no toll roads at all, its transportation department says.
The exception lies north. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway charges southbound only, back toward New Orleans: $6 cash or card, 3% more on a card, or $3.40 with a toll tag. Going north is free.
An out-of-state tag is no use here — those don’t work on Louisiana’s state toll bridges, and neither Avis e-Toll nor Enterprise’s TollPass lists Louisiana. Pay at the Causeway booth, and before a Grand Isle run, ask the counter how an LA 1 toll-by-plate bill would reach you.
One plantation between the ship and your flight
The River Road plantations sit nearer the airport than the ship. By our estimates, Oak Alley is about 41 miles from MSY and Whitney about 34.
So collect the car at the Hilton Riverside, spend the day upriver, and return it at MSY. Houmas House gives mansion tours until 7; Destrehan, by its own count, is 10 minutes from the airport and stores luggage free while you tour.
Two times to plan around: Whitney is closed on Tuesdays, and Laura’s last tour starts at 2:20.
Tickets, times and whether a tour beats the car: River Road on the way to your flight.
Downtown costs less twice: the counter and the cab
| Rental length | From the Hilton Riverside counter | From MSY |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $56 plus a $14–$16 cab from the ship (city rate) | $73 plus the city’s $36 flat fare by cab |
| 3 days | $170 plus a $14–$16 cab from the ship (city rate) | $218 plus the city’s $36 flat fare by cab |
| 5 days | $282 plus a $14–$16 cab from the ship (city rate) | $364 plus the city’s $36 flat fare by cab |
At an assumed $50 a day, MSY adds its $7.95 daily facility charge, an access fee we assume at 11%, and 14.75% tax; downtown has no airport charges and 13% tax. Fuel isn’t included on either side. Illustrative
$56 against $73 for a day, and $282 against $364 for five — and the airport also needs the pricier cab.
Mostly, what MSY buys you is the ending. If the trip finishes with a flight you want the car there, and a one-way return from downtown may carry a charge we found no one publishing.
Carnival takes your bags; Amtrak takes you to the coast
Carnival sells a “Big Easy Hop On Hop Off: MSY Airport Transfer” at $94.99 an adult — a sightseeing loop on a bus while your bags go ahead to the airport, per Carnival.
Its plain transfer back to MSY is $27.99 a person, and it says not to book a flight before 11:30 AM.
Staying another night in town? Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service runs twice a day along the coast, stopping at Bay St. Louis, Gulfport and Biloxi on its way to Mobile — a slow, easy day out, and no car to park.
Booster from 4, adult belt from 9
Louisiana’s seat law, section 32:295 of its statutes, starts rear-facing under 2 and moves to a harness seat from 2 until the child outgrows it.
Boosters start at 4, and at 9, or whenever the booster is outgrown, the adult belt takes over — and under 13, the back seat, when the car has one.
None of that changes because the car is rented.
Your own seat checks free on American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue, which beats paying the counter for one.
Enterprise’s US figures are the ones to pack by: 5 people and 3 bags in a midsize car, 5 and 5 in a standard SUV, 7 and 3 in a full-size SUV, 7 and 5 in a 7-passenger minivan.

Driving off from a New Orleans cruise: FAQ
Can I pick up a rental car at the New Orleans cruise port after my cruise?
We didn’t find a rental counter at either terminal. The closest is Avis and Budget at 2 Poydras St, in the lobby of the Hilton Riverside, about 0.4 miles from Julia Street — open weekdays from 8 AM to 6 PM, Saturdays 9 to 2, Sundays 9 to 1.
How much is a cab from the New Orleans cruise ship to a rental counter?
The city’s rate to or from a cruise ship is $14 for one passenger or $8 a person for two or more, luggage included, or the meter fare. For MSY, the flat fare is $36 covering one or two riders, or $15 each once there are three or more.
How far is the Mississippi Gulf Coast from the New Orleans cruise port?
By our route estimates with no traffic, about 63 miles to Old Town Bay St. Louis and 92 to the casinos in Biloxi. I-10 has no tolls, and neither does anything else in Mississippi.
Are there tolls driving from New Orleans to Lafayette?
None. I-10 west through Baton Rouge to Lafayette is free, and so is the Crescent City Connection downtown, since 2013. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is the toll to know about, and it charges southbound only.
