The city prices both ends of your trip
Here the no-car side of the math is printed, not guessed, because the city sets it. A cab from MSY downtown is a flat $36 for one or two of you, or $15 a person for three or more.
On sailing morning the city’s cruise-ship rate, in either direction, is $14 if you’re riding alone, or $8 each for two or more, luggage included. If the meter comes to more, the meter wins; it starts at $3.50 and adds 30 cents every eighth of a mile.
For two of you that’s at least $16 to the ship, bags and all. The one caveat is age — the city’s rate page was last updated in September 2022, so settle the fare before the trunk closes.
Know your terminal before you flag the cab. Carnival sails from Erato Street, and Norwegian and Royal Caribbean from Julia Street.
Six of our top 20 hotels publish a walk to the terminals, if you’d rather skip even that cab — the ranked list.
A car for the day out, not for the nights in town
Sleep in the Quarter, the CBD or the Warehouse District without one. What you’ll do in town is a walk, a $1.25 streetcar or a short cab apart, and a rental adds a nightly parking bill plus a return errand on sailing morning. If River Road, a swamp tour or the Northshore is the plan, rent for that day alone.
No car needed if
- You’re sleeping in the Quarter, the CBD or the Warehouse District
- Feet, streetcars and cabs cover your list
- Your hotel wants $44 or more a night to park, as all ten we checked do
- You land at MSY and board the next day
Rent for one day if
- River Road or a swamp tour is on the list — that day, mapped
- You’re staying in Metairie or out by the airport
- You’re five or more, and one cab may not hold you all
- You’re driving on after the cruise anyway
$44 to $58 a night, and 13% on top
Most are valet, a couple let you park it yourself, and Orleans Parish taxes paid parking at 13%, per the city.
| Hotel | Part of town | Parking, as the hotel lists it |
|---|---|---|
| Hilton New Orleans Riverside | Riverfront | Self-park $50 a day, valet $58 |
| Embassy Suites Convention Center | Warehouse District | Self-park or valet $50 a day |
| Hampton Inn & Suites Convention Center | Warehouse District | Valet $44; cruise parking $22 a night plus tax |
| Hotel Monteleone | French Quarter | Valet only, $50 a night plus tax |
| Royal Sonesta | French Quarter | $55 a night plus tax, and a $25 destination fee |
| Omni Royal Orleans | French Quarter | Valet $56.35 a day, tax included |
| Loews New Orleans | CBD | Valet only, $54 a night plus tax, and a $30 destination fee |
| Windsor Court | CBD | $56 a night plus tax |
| The Roosevelt | CBD | Valet $57; no self-park |
| The Westin Canal Place | French Quarter edge | Valet $58 a day |
From the hotels’ websites on Sept 28, 2026; most quote before tax. Caesars New Orleans and the Four Seasons didn’t post a rate we could read, so they’re left off. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Two nights at $50 is $100 before the parish’s cut — and before the rental itself.
The Hampton Inn & Suites at the Convention Center sells extended cruise parking at $22 a night plus tax, less than the port’s garage by the day. That’s a deal for your own car — not a rental, which the company keeps billing for every day you’re at sea.
Could the curb beat the valet?
| What the city says | |
|---|---|
| Meters | Meters in the French Quarter, Marigny, CBD and Warehouse District are $3 an hour, Monday to Saturday 8 AM to 7 PM, free on Sundays; ParkMobile adds 35 cents a session |
| Permit zones | In a residential permit zone, more than 2 hours without a permit is a $75 ticket |
| Towing | A tow to the city’s auto pound on North Claiborne starts at $228.75, plus $34 a day in storage |
| Bourbon Street | The city’s bollard plan closes the 100 to 700 blocks of Bourbon Street to cars from 7 PM to 4 AM every day (a 2018 city document; the hours may have changed since) |
Rules as the city’s own parking pages state them. Checked Sept 28, 2026
On paper, a Sunday meter costs nothing.
The catch is everything around it, because permit zones and posted signs apply every day.
A tow to the North Claiborne pound starts at $228.75 plus $34 a day — more than four nights of the Monteleone’s $50 valet.
For a car you’re keeping overnight, we’d pay the hotel.
What two downtown nights cost, keys or no keys
| With the rental | Without it | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | The MSY rental car center, 15 to 20 minutes out on the airport’s shuttle | $36 by cab for one or two, the city’s flat fare |
| Two nights | Two rental days with MSY’s charges and tax, plus $50 a night to park | On foot, $1.25 streetcars and cabs when you want them |
| Sailing morning | The car goes back first, at the Hilton Riverside or MSY | One cab to the ship: $14 solo, $8 each for two or more |
| Two travelers, all in | $248 | About $36 in from MSY, plus your rides |
Our assumed $50 base rate, MSY’s $7.95 daily facility charge, an assumed 11% access fee, 14.75% tax (our sum), fuel for about 16 miles and the Hilton Riverside’s published $50 self-park, with the parish’s parking tax on top. Illustrative
About $248 against about $36 — and the $36 has already delivered you to the hotel.
It would take a great many cabs to Frenchmen Street to close that gap, so count yours in the calculator below.
Swap in your hotel, then your cab money
It’s set for two travelers and two nights, so put in your hotel’s parking and then what you’d spend on cabs and streetcars instead.
The rental, line by line
Our $50 base rate is an assumption, so treat this as an estimate, not a quote. On Sept 28, 2026, the lowest MSY rate Discover Cars advertised was “from $37” a day, and it notes that its US prices aren’t guaranteed to carry every tax and surcharge. Put your own quote’s rate in its place. MSY pickups carry the $7.95 facility charge the airport levies per rental day, plus an 11% access fee we assume because no company publishes it. We add the published tax rates ourselves: the 3% rental tax, the airport district, Jefferson Parish and Louisiana’s own rate make 14.75% at MSY, and downtown the rental tax plus Orleans Parish and Louisiana make 13%. There’s no Florida-style daily surcharge in Louisiana. Fuel: 30 mpg, with gas at $4.01 a gallon, which was AAA’s figure for New Orleans on Sept 27, 2026. Parking opens at the Hilton Riverside’s $50 self-park — change it to your hotel’s, and add its tax. The no-car row opens on the flat MSY cab; add the rides you’d take.
When the streetcar will do, and when it won’t
A ride on an RTA bus or streetcar is $1.25. A Jazzy Pass, bought in the Le Pass app, is $3 for a day, $8 for three and $15 for seven, and it covers the ferry too.
The Riverfront line is the one pointed at your ship. RTA’s timetable runs it along the river from the French Market to Julia Station, by the Convention Center — the end nearest the terminals, which isn’t the same as the terminal door.
We haven’t measured the walk from Julia Station to either terminal — with big bags we’d take the cab, which is a set fare anyway.
For an evening across the river, the Canal Street ferry to Algiers Point is $2, every 30 minutes from 6:15 AM to 8:45 PM (10:45 PM on Friday and Saturday).
If River Road is the reason for a car
Then rent that morning downtown, and give it back that evening. Paying for the car on the nights you’re in town, and parking it, buys you nothing.
Avis and Budget share a counter in the Hilton Riverside’s lobby, the closest we found to the ships at roughly 0.4 road miles from Julia Street, by our estimate. It keeps weekday hours of 8 to 6, then 9 to 2 on Saturday and 9 to 1 on Sunday.
On a Sunday, Enterprise on Canal Street keeps longer hours, 8 to 5, and the rest of the downtown counters are here.
A downtown pickup also skips MSY’s $7.95 daily charge and pays 13% tax rather than 14.75% — by our sums, not the counter’s.
- Pickup: a downtown counter
- Return: that counter, before it closes
- Fees and taxes listed before payment
- No cancellation charge 48 hours or more out
Yes, the daiquiri has a rule of its own
| What the law says | |
|---|---|
| Phones | Louisiana’s hands-free law (Act 288 of 2025): no holding a phone while driving. $100, or $250 in a school or work zone, doubled after a crash |
| To-go drinks | Open containers are banned in the car. A frozen drink counts as open once the lid is off, a straw is in, or some is gone (R.S. 32:300) |
| Speed limits | 70 mph on interstates, 65 on divided highways, 55 on other highways unless posted lower (R.S. 32:61) |
| Move over | Change lanes away from any vehicle with flashing lights on the shoulder, including tow trucks, or slow down if you can’t (R.S. 32:125) |
Louisiana’s statutes and its Highway Safety Commission, Sept 28, 2026. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Drive-through daiquiri shops are real, and so is the fine print.
A frozen drink counts as an open container once the lid comes off, a straw goes in or a sip is gone — so for the drive, it stays sealed, not half-finished.
Questions from the Quarter
Do I need a car in New Orleans before my cruise?
For a night or two in the Quarter, the CBD or the Warehouse District, no. Parking runs about $44 to $58 a night at the hotels we checked, streetcars are $1.25 a ride, and the city fixes the cab fare to a cruise ship at $14 for a solo rider or $8 a head for two or more.
How much is hotel parking in the French Quarter?
At the Quarter hotels we checked: the Monteleone at $50 a night valet, the Royal Sonesta at $55, the Omni Royal Orleans at $56.35 with tax, and the Westin Canal Place at $58 valet. Most of them add tax.
Does the streetcar go to the New Orleans cruise terminal?
It gets close. RTA’s timetable runs the Riverfront streetcar from the French Market to Julia Station by the Convention Center, the end nearest the terminals, for $1.25. With big bags, the city’s $14 cab rate to the ship is simpler.
Is street parking free in New Orleans on Sunday?
The meters are. The city runs them Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, at $3 an hour in the Quarter, Marigny, CBD and Warehouse District; permit zones and posted signs still apply on Sunday.
