One airport with a $185 rival, one with none
From Baton Rouge, a one-way car at about $71 for two leaves a lot of room under Tiger Airport Shuttle’s $185 daytime fare to downtown New Orleans — as long as the drop charge on your quote stays modest. From Gulfport we found no published transfer to New Orleans, so the car is the plan, and the only question is whether the cheaper flight still beats it.
Rent one way if
- The fare saving still clears a day’s car and its drop charge
- You’re landing the day before
- One of them is closer to home and you’d drive regardless
- A plantation stop between Baton Rouge and the city appeals
Book MSY instead if
- You’d land on sail day
- The drop charge swallows what the flight saved
- You’d reach town on a weekend evening, after the downtown counters shut
- It’s one or two of you and the $36 cab from MSY covers it
From Baton Rouge the airport is nearer; from Gulfport, the ship
Both drives are I-10. The geography runs opposite ways, though — which matters the moment you ask where the car goes back.
From Baton Rouge, MSY is the nearer of the two: about 76 miles, against about 90 to the Erato Street terminal.
From Gulfport it’s the other way round, with the ship at about 79 miles and MSY at about 87. A Gulfport car that has to go back to the airport costs you extra miles, then the $36 cab into town.
The Baton Rouge drive has the better detour.
The River Road plantations lie between Baton Rouge and the city, so Houmas House, Oak Alley or Laura turns the drive into a day — and Houmas House runs mansion tours until 7.
From Gulfport it’s the coast and the state line. Mississippi’s transportation department says the state has no toll roads, and the one Louisiana toll anywhere near the route, the Causeway, is one you won’t use.
Bay St. Louis is on the way if lunch on the water sounds right. The plantations, the swamps and their hours: River Road before or after the cruise.
Counters, flights and miles, airport by airport
| Baton Rouge (BTR) | Gulfport-Biloxi (GPT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who flies there | American, Delta and United | See the airport’s own airline page |
| Rental desks | Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National, in the terminal | Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National in the terminal, and Nifty off site |
| Desk hours | Avis and Budget 7 AM to 11 PM (Saturday 8 to 10); Enterprise 9 AM to 11:59 PM; Hertz closes at 5 PM on Saturdays | Enterprise 8 AM to 11:59 PM daily, with the cars a walk from the counter |
| Miles to Erato Street | 90 mi, about 1 hr 49 min | 79 mi, about 1 hr 33 min |
| Miles to MSY | 76 mi, about 1 hr 31 min | 87 mi, about 1 hr 42 min |

From the two airports’ pages and each rental company’s own location page, Sept 28, 2026. Miles and minutes are our OpenStreetMap routing from the Erato Street terminal with the roads empty; I-10 at rush hour adds a lot. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Neither airport sends you on a shuttle to a rental center — the main counters are in the terminal at both, with only Nifty off site at GPT.
One Saturday snag — Hertz at Baton Rouge closes at 5 PM, so a late Saturday landing there leaves you with the other companies.
About $71 from BTR, $72 from GPT, before the drop charge
Two travelers from Baton Rouge to start. Switch the pickup to Gulfport, then type the one-way charge your quote shows.
The rental, line by line
We start at $50 a day because we had to start somewhere; it’s a stand-in, not a quote.
The 10% in the fees box is a placeholder too. BTR and GPT keep their airport charges to themselves, and we couldn’t confirm East Baton Rouge Parish’s share of the tax, so overwrite it with whatever your quote lists.
Tax is Louisiana’s 5% plus its 3% rental tax at BTR, or Mississippi’s 5% and 6% at GPT. The drop charge starts at zero only because we found no one publishing it — that box is yours.
Fuel covers about 90 miles from BTR (about 79 from GPT) in a 30-mpg car, at $4.01 a gallon (AAA’s New Orleans figure for Sept 27, 2026).
At our assumptions, a day’s car comes to about $71 out of Baton Rouge and $72 out of Gulfport, with no drop charge counted.
Put the one from your quote into its box. That number decides it, not the daily rate.
What the one-way costs is anyone’s guess until you ask
Avis, Budget and Enterprise all list one-way rentals out of BTR, and Hertz mentions an “intercity fee.” None of them prints the amount.
Enterprise’s general line is that a drop charge “varies based on location and time of year” and appears when you book. We found no company publishing one from BTR, GPT or Houston into New Orleans.
So price it twice before you buy the flight — the one-way from BTR or GPT, then the same car from MSY.
If the drop charge is bigger than the fare difference, fly MSY and take the $36 cab. How these one-ways work at every port we cover: our one-way rental guide.
Open downtown, or on to MSY?
| Return it at | Open | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Avis and Budget, Hilton Riverside | Mon–Fri 8–6 · Sat 9–2 · Sun 9–1 | Roughly 0.4 miles to Julia Street, then the city’s cab rate to a ship: $14 for one passenger, and two or more pay $8 each |
| Hertz, Convention Center Blvd | Mon–Fri 8–6 · Sat 9–noon · Sun closed | About half a mile from either terminal |
| Enterprise, 1939 Canal St | Mon–Fri 8–6 · Sat–Sun 8–5 | About 2 miles from the terminals |
| MSY rental car center | Depends on the company; Avis 5 AM to 2 AM | The airport shuttle, then the $36 flat cab downtown for one or two |
Hours from each company’s own location page, Sept 28, 2026; distances are our routing. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Reach New Orleans from Baton Rouge on a Saturday evening, and every downtown counter we list is closed until morning.
You can drop at MSY that night, or keep the car and return it downtown on sail morning — if the counter opens in time for your boarding window.
The key drop at the Hilton Riverside looks like a way out.
In Budget’s words, though, you answer for the car, and anything it racks up, “until the contract can be closed on the following business day” — and before a cruise, that’s the next morning the counter opens.
The car stays yours on paper while you’re at sea. We’d skip it.
Two states’ rules and a parish share we couldn’t pin down
| Pickup | Tax | Airport charges |
|---|---|---|
| Baton Rouge (BTR) | Louisiana’s 5% plus its 3% rental tax, and East Baton Rouge Parish’s cut, which we couldn’t confirm | Not published |
| Gulfport (GPT) | 5% sales tax and a 6% rental tax, per Mississippi’s Department of Revenue | Not published |
| New Orleans (MSY), to compare | About 14.75%, our sum of the state, parish, airport-district and rental taxes | $7.95 a day, and an access fee of about 11% |
Sources: Louisiana’s and Mississippi’s revenue departments and MSY’s 2024 audit, read Sept 28, 2026. At BTR, neither the airport nor any company publishes the facility charge, the concession fee or the parish’s share of the tax; at GPT, nobody publishes the facility charge, the concession fee or a drop fee into Louisiana. Partly unpublished
Pick up at GPT and our calculator applies Mississippi’s 11%, not Louisiana’s rates, since it’s a Mississippi rental. At BTR, the parish’s missing share is why the fees box carries a placeholder — a guess, not a figure.
Mobile, and Houston if you must
Mobile’s flights still use Mobile Regional (MOB), since the new downtown terminal at Brookley slipped to early 2027, local TV reported in May. MOB is about 142 miles from the terminal by our routing, just under three hours with no traffic.
Houston is another order of distance. It’s about 342 miles from Bush Intercontinental by our routing, or about 385 by Enterprise’s own road-trip page, which calls it six and a half hours.
Nobody publishes a Houston drop charge into New Orleans either — so at that range, price the MSY flight before you commit.
Run both before you buy the flight
Search the one-way from BTR or GPT into New Orleans, then a round trip from MSY for the same dates.

BTR, GPT and the New Orleans ships: your questions
How far is Baton Rouge airport from the New Orleans cruise port?
Around 90 miles to the Erato Street terminal, and an hour and 50 minutes without traffic, as we route it. MSY is closer to Baton Rouge, about 76 miles.
How far is Gulfport-Biloxi airport from the New Orleans cruise terminal?
About 79 miles on I-10 and an hour and a half with empty roads, our estimate. There are no toll roads in Mississippi.
Can I rent a car one way from Baton Rouge to New Orleans?
Yes: Avis, Budget and Enterprise list one-ways from BTR, and Hertz refers to an intercity fee. What none of them publishes is the charge, so get it on your quote first.
What’s the tax on a rental car at Gulfport-Biloxi airport?
Eleven percent in all: Mississippi’s 5% sales tax and its 6% rental tax, per the state Department of Revenue. GPT’s own airport charges aren’t published.
Is there a shuttle from Baton Rouge airport to the New Orleans cruise port?
Not from a cruise line that we found. Tiger Airport Shuttle, a private company, quotes Baton Rouge to downtown New Orleans at $185 by day and $215 at night.
