Mobile Regional to Water Street: what a ride costs against a car day
Fly into Mobile Regional and the ship is about 18 road miles east by our routing, so start with that ride.
| Ride | Price | What it rests on | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cab from MOB | No fare published | Modern Transport, 251-265-1029, is the cab company the airport lists | Listed, unpriced |
| Cab or rideshare, CruiseHive’s range | $25 to $35 | A cruise-news site’s figure, not a tariff | Secondary |
| The meter, our arithmetic | About $40 in, $33 back | A third-party $2.50 start and $2.06 a mile on our routed miles, before tip | Our arithmetic |
| Uber or Lyft | Open the app | Pick-up zone at the southwest corner of the main terminal | Confirmed |
| A $78 MOB car for the day | About $86 | Discover Cars’ “from” price, 7% tax and fuel; returned somewhere other than the ship | Our arithmetic |
From the airport authority’s ground-transport page, CruiseHive, a third-party fare site and Discover Cars’ MOB page (updated Oct 2, 2026), read Oct 3, 2026. Ranges unconfirmed
The airport authority lists one cab company at MOB, Modern Transport (251-265-1029), with no fares; CruiseHive puts a taxi or rideshare from MOB at $25 to $35.
A third-party fare site gives Mobile’s meter as $2.50 to start and $2.06 a mile; we couldn’t read a City tariff. Run it over our routed miles and the ride in comes to about $40, the ride back about $33 — higher than CruiseHive’s range, so take the app’s quote over either.
Uber and Lyft use a marked zone at the southwest corner of MOB’s main terminal — and the app shows its fare before you book, which no Mobile tariff we found does.
Set that beside a car. At Discover Cars’ “from” price the airport car is about $86 for one day, our arithmetic, and it still has to go back to a counter, not to the ship.
For sail day alone the ride wins on every number we have — the car day costs more than twice the top of CruiseHive’s range.
Four questions about your Mobile sailing
Plans, arrival, party size and nights. Tap one answer per row and the reading follows.
“Driving my own car” pushes hard toward no — the rental question disappears, and the terminal deck is what’s left to price.
Flying into Pensacola or New Orleans pushes the other way, because both are an hour or more from the ship, and a one-way car starts to look like transport, not a luxury.
Amtrak’s platform on Water Street, a short walk from the cruise terminal
Take the train to Mobile and you step off a few hundred yards from the terminal door, per Visit Mobile.
Mobile’s stop is a platform only, at 101 South Water Street, about 400 yards from the cruise terminal.
Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service platform, 101 South Water Street, is about 400 yards from the terminal, per Visit Mobile — close enough that a train arrival needs no car and, for most, no cab.
Visit Mobile places the platform between the Mobile Convention Center and the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, on the same street as the ship.
Amtrak’s page doesn’t list checked baggage at Mobile; the TV report mentioned generous carry-on allowances. Pack for carrying, not for checking — you’ll be wheeling it to the terminal yourself.
We couldn’t read the timetable (the schedule PDF refused us), so check train times on Amtrak before you plan a sailing day around one.
Two adults at the reported $15 starting fare come to $30, our arithmetic. The New Orleans page sets the train against a one-way car.
The Wave, MOB City Rides and a downtown you can walk
A night or two in downtown Mobile before the ship is a walking trip, not a driving one.
The Wave Transit charges $1.25 a ride with one free transfer; we found no bus to the airport. Four riders pay $5 a trip by our arithmetic — fine for downtown, no help with the airport.
MOB City Rides run golf-cart shuttles around downtown for $5 a person a ride, per Visit Mobile, so four people on one ride is $20.
Sleeping downtown the night before? Our Mobile hotel page has the options near Water Street.
The USS Alabama is the one sight across the river, and a ride covers it for less than a car day; the battleship section has the sum.
A car parked downtown for a night ashore mostly sits in a garage while you walk, so skip it if that’s the plan.
Which Mobile plans need four wheels, and which need a cab
Sort the days before you sort the car — most of the answer is which way each one points from Water Street.
The car earns it
- Dauphin Island and the ferry: about 38.5 road miles to Fort Gaines. The ferry loop.
- Gulf Shores and Orange Beach: about 49 to 52 road miles each way. The beaches.
- Arriving at New Orleans: a one-way car replaces the train and a cab. New Orleans to Mobile.
- A slow road home: a car after you dock, if a branch is open. After the cruise.
Ride instead
- Sail day from MOB: a cab or the app. MOB, rent or ride.
- Amtrak arrivals: walk the 400 yards.
- Downtown and the waterfront: feet, The Wave or a golf cart.
- The battleship: 2.8 road miles away, a short ride.
The split runs by distance from Water Street. A day that crosses the bay or heads for the Gulf tends to favor the car — a day you could cover by cart almost never does.
If the reading said rent, book the day out and nothing more
Collect the car the morning of the trip and return it before the branch shuts — 6 PM on a weekday, noon on a Saturday, 3 PM at Mertz on a Sunday. The hub’s checker has each branch.
A day trip that runs late goes back to Mobile Regional, where the counters stay open far longer.
- Pick-up: MOB, open late every day
- Return the same day
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
