Should You Rent a Car for a Québec City Cruise?

For the ship and the old city, almost never. The Port puts both terminals a 15-minute walk from the Gare du Palais, an RTC ride is C$3.85 by ticket, and the Port lists a fixed C$41.40 cab to the airport. A car starts to earn its fee only once you leave town, for Charlevoix or the Île d’Orléans. Four questions place your trip on one side of that line.

Old Québec

Inside the walls, the car mostly waits in a garage

Start with how the old city treats a car, because the ships tie up right below it.

The tourism office’s line

Québec City’s own tourism office tells drivers to park on arrival and leave the car until they go. That’s the official advice, not ours — and it sums up a rental in the old city.

The Port says both terminals are a 15-minute walk from the Gare du Palais train station.

Arrive by rail and the ship is a walk away, not a ride.

The city lists public garages in and around Old Québec and leaves rates to the operators; its list includes Place des Canotiers (50 rue Dalhousie), Du Vieux-Port (76 rue Dalhousie, Indigo), Hôtel de ville (2 rue des Jardins), D’Youville, De Beaucours (39 rue Saint-Louis) and the Gare du Palais.

The tourism office says a full day in a downtown lot runs around C$20 on average, and advises parking on arrival and leaving the car until you go. That works out to roughly C$140 for a week of sitting, our arithmetic on their average.

A car you drive one day and park six is a parking bill with a steering wheel. Skip it.

The nearest rental counters are a short walk or cab from the ships, and the hub lists every one with its hours.

Hotel parking

Nine hotels in and around Old Québec, nine overnight parking charges

If the car sleeps where you sleep, the hotel sets the price — and we read each one’s page.

HotelAreaWhat it charges, in its own words
Fairmont Le Château FrontenacUpper TownValet C$55 for 24 hours with in and out (C$65 oversized; 6 ft clearance); public self-park C$60 for 24 hours
Auberge Saint-AntoineOld PortValet C$45 a day, indoor; taxes not stated

Delta Hotels QuébecParliament HillSelf-park C$26.05 a day
Hôtel Port-RoyalOld PortSelf C$25 a day plus taxes; not guaranteed, can’t be reserved
Hôtel ChamplainUpper TownC$25 a day, outdoor, limited, reservation required

Hôtel Le PrioriOld PortSelf-park at Place des Canotiers, 250 m away, C$22 a night plus taxes
Hôtel des CoutellierOld PortLot across the street, C$18 plus taxes a night

From each hotel’s own page, read Sept 26, 2026; C$, and taxes apply where the hotel says so. Checked Oct 3, 2026

The spread runs from C$18 at the lot across from Hôtel des Coutellier to C$55 for the Château Frontenac’s valet. Two nights at the Frontenac is C$110 — for a car you didn’t drive.

Three nights at the low end is still C$54 — close to a full rental day once tax lands, about C$57 on an assumed C$50 base.

Read the small print too. Port-Royal’s spaces aren’t guaranteed and can’t be reserved, Champlain wants a reservation, and Hôtel Clarendon’s valet runs only from 7 AM to 11 PM.

L’Hôtel du Vieux-Québec has no valet and sends you to off-site paid parking. No Old Port or Old Québec hotel we read prints a rate for leaving the car while you cruise. Ask first.

The RTC

RTC bus fares since July 2026, from one ride to five days

Québec City’s buses are cheap, and the passes suit a short stay either side of the cruise.

From the RTC’s fare schedule, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026

A family of four on day passes pays C$42, our arithmetic if everyone pays the full fare — still under an assumed C$50 rental day once tax lands, about C$57, before parking.

The Port’s page still prints C$3.75 for route 11 through Old Québec, an older fare. Trust the RTC’s own table, not the Port’s copy of it.

Children 5 and under ride free — that helps a young family more than any rental discount would.

The bus works best inside the city. From the airport, routes 76 and 80 both need a change to reach the Old Port — the YQB page traces that connection.

The cab

The airport cab fare, where the Port and the tourism office disagree

For the airport run, the cab is the default — once you know which price to expect.

The Port lists a fixed C$41.40 taxi fare between its docks and YQB, subject to change (Taxi Coop Québec 418-525-5191, Taxi Québec 418-525-8123).

The tourism office’s cruise page says around C$45 by day and C$50 at night; the airport shows its rates only as images. Same ride, two official sources, and a gap of up to about C$9.

We can’t tell you which one the driver will charge. The Port’s figure is the newer read (Oct 3, 2026) and the one called fixed, so ask for that flat fare before the car pulls away, and budget C$50 in case the tourism office has it right.

Split four ways, the Port’s figure is about C$10.35 a head before tip, our arithmetic. That’s a fare, not a rental day, and nothing to hand back afterward.

Uber and Lyft pick up at YQB by app; no fare is published, so open the app before you decide.

Where it pays

Where a Québec car pays for itself, and where it just sits

Sort the list by direction. Most of the answer is in which way each day points.

The car earns it

It costs you

  • Old Québec nights: C$18 to C$55 a night for the car to sit. The hotel table.
  • The ride to the ship: no rental counter at either terminal. The terminals.
  • The airport run alone: one cab covers it. YQB, priced.

The line runs at the city limits.

A day that leaves town tends to favor the car, and a day spent inside the walls rarely does.

The call

Rent for the day out of town, not the nights in it

If the quiz said “rent,” book one day and keep the car out of the hotel garage. On our numbers a city day is about C$57 with both taxes, at an assumed C$50 base.

Every in-town desk closes by 5 PM — check your return on the hours checker before you choose the time.

FAQ

Québec City without a rental: the questions

Do you need a car in Old Québec before a cruise?

Rarely. The Port puts both terminals a 15-minute walk from the Gare du Palais, and the tourism office itself advises parking on arrival and leaving the car until you go. A car helps for Charlevoix or the Île d’Orléans.

How much is a bus ticket in Québec City in 2026?

Since July 1, 2026, the RTC charges C$3.85 a ride by ticket or C$4 cash, C$10.50 for a day pass and C$34.75 for five consecutive days. Children 5 and under ride free.

How much is a taxi from the Port of Québec to the airport?

The Port lists a fixed C$41.40 fare between its docks and YQB, subject to change. The tourism office says around C$45 by day and C$50 at night, so ask for the Port’s fixed fare before you set off and budget for the higher figure.

How much does hotel parking cost in Old Québec?

On the hotels’ own pages, from C$18 a night at the lot across from Hôtel des Coutellier to C$55 for valet at the Château Frontenac. Some spaces can’t be reserved, so ask first.

Can you leave a car at an Old Québec hotel during a cruise?

None of the Old Port or Old Québec hotels we read prints a rate for it. Ask the hotel directly; the Port’s own Louise Basin lot sells cruise parking by app.
