Walking off in Québec City into desks that keep office hours
Start with the clock, because it rules out more desks than the map does.
Disembarkation is a morning event, and Québec City’s rental desks are morning-to-afternoon businesses. Every town desk on our list shuts by 5 PM, several don’t open on weekends, and none sits at either terminal.
If yours is one of the sailings that finishes here, up from Boston, say, the day has a hard edge — desks close, and the car has to come from somewhere first.
Princess’s guideline covers voyages that reach Québec at 7 AM and overnight before you get off: the earliest flight it allows is 8 AM on day two, 10 AM preferred. That’s a morning flight straight off the ship, not a day with a car, so skip the rental if a flight home is the plan.
The desk-by-desk detail lives on the hub’s cards — below is the version for the day you dock.
Docking on a Sunday, with Côte du Palais, the Hilton lobby or Frank-Carrel
Three choices, three different closing hours — know yours before the ship docks.
Only three in-town desks on our list open on a Sunday — Hertz on Côte du Palais (8–3, per Kayak), Avis/Budget at the Hilton (8–noon) and Enterprise on Frank-Carrel (10–2); every in-town desk is shut by 5 PM.
The Hilton lobby desk is the tight one — walk off at 10:30 and you have an hour and a half.
Frank-Carrel opens late and closes early, 10 to 2. It’s farther out, in the Hamel area, so add a cab.
Hertz is the nearest of the three to the ship, though its weekend hours come from Kayak rather than Hertz. Confirm by phone the week before.
Miss all three and the YQB counters are open until midnight on a Sunday — a cab ride away, not a walk. Book there if your timing is loose.
Saturdays run a little wider; the hub’s hours checker will test any day and time you type.
Being collected at the ship, with 10 free minutes at 84 and a shuttle at 30
The two terminals treat a waiting car very differently.
At Terminal 84 the first 10 minutes of drop-off parking are free, then C$6 an hour, per the Port.
Half an hour past the free window is about C$3, our arithmetic. It’s a small fee, not a reason to circle the block.
The Port runs a shuttle for passengers and crew at Wharf 30; vehicle access there is restricted during the cruise season.
So a friend with a car, or a rental you’ve already collected, may not reach the door at Terminal 30. Plan the meet-up at the shuttle’s end, not the gangway.
Wharf assignments differ between the Port’s web schedule and its PDF on several days. Check your line’s documents for the terminal before anyone drives over.
Leave the bags with the Port for C$10, collect the car, come back for them
The Port holds luggage for disembarking passengers, which makes a walk to the nearest desk realistic.
The Port stores luggage for disembarking passengers from 8 AM to 5 PM for C$10, card only; its page doesn’t say whether that’s per bag or per party, so ask at the desk before you count on one fee for the family.
It’s worth it if the desk is close and you’d rather not haul suitcases to Côte du Palais.
Mind the hours on both ends. Storage closes at 5 PM, the same hour the latest town desks do, so a late pick-up can strand the bags or the car.
From the gangway to a Québec rental, step by step
Five steps, in the order the clock forces them.
Book the right desk
Pick by the day you dock and the closing time, then by rate. A Sunday narrows it to three.
Store or carry
Leave the bags with the Port, card only, or take them in a cab.
Reach the desk
Côte du Palais is the short trip. Parliament Hill desks need a cab; the outlying ones a longer one.
Ask three things
The return location, the after-hours drop rule, and whether a US drop is allowed.
Collect the bags
Back to the Port before 5 PM, or keep them in the car from the start.
Rearrange that list if the desk is far — the bags go with you, and the luggage storage drops out.
Three days with a car after you dock, priced to the YQB return
Collect the car the day you dock, keep it three days, and hand it back at the airport before you fly.
The rental, line by line
The C$50 base is our assumption; type your quote. GST and QST are in. Fuel covers about 128 miles, a Baie-Saint-Paul round trip plus the run to YQB on our routing, at 30 mpg and GasWizard’s Oct 3 price (a secondary source). If you pick up in town and return at YQB, ask whether that counts as a one-way and type any charge into the drop box. YQB publishes no airport fee, so that starts at zero.
At an assumed C$50 a day, three days with a Charlevoix drive come to about C$206 from a town desk, our arithmetic.
Switch the pick-up to YQB and, with no airport fee typed in, it stays at C$206; any gap on a real quote comes from its fee lines, not the taxes.
Want the Charlevoix day itself? The day-trip page has the distances and the timing.
Handing the car back at YQB, open to midnight most nights and 9 on Saturday
The airport is the one place in Québec City where returning after 5 PM is ordinary.
From Terminal 84 to the airport is about 10.1 miles on our routing, a little shorter than the trip in.
Avis, Budget and Hertz keep their YQB counters open until midnight from Sunday to Friday — Saturday is the short day, 9 AM to 9 PM. National lists key-slot returns between midnight and 7 AM, and Enterprise’s counter closes at 11:59 PM.
Late on a Saturday? Use a brand with a drop box — Avis, Enterprise or National, per their pages. Hertz asks for prior arrangement, so mention it at pick-up.
A town desk is a worse place to return late. Avis on Wilfrid-Hamel insists on office hours, and Enterprise at Université Laval takes no after-hours returns.
Fill the tank before the airport road and keep the receipt — routine advice, not a Québec rule.
Taking a Québec rental home to the US starts with the return city
A rental that ends in another country needs more than a booking — it needs the company’s permission.
Hertz’s YQB terms allow the US but ask you to carry the rental agreement, get a pass from the border guard at entry, tell the counter, and bring the car back to the renting location — so no one-way from Hertz YQB into the US.
The other companies we read allow the crossing, and none publishes a one-way fee. You only see it in a quote.
The full company-by-company rules, and the papers you need at the border, are on the drive-in page. Read it before the counter.
Heading to Montréal instead? The Montréal one-way page covers that drive — about 250 km by Highway 20, per the tourism office.
Winter tires only become a rental question from Dec 1 under Québec’s rule, so a fall disembarkation won’t run into it.
Book a desk that’s open the morning you dock
Search the dates from disembarkation day, then filter by what’s open. A Sunday leaves YQB, the Hilton lobby, Côte du Palais and Frank-Carrel.
- Pick-up: Côte du Palais or YQB
- Return: YQB until midnight most nights
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
The day you dock in Québec City: questions
