Boston, New York and Burlington to Terminal 84, by the clock
Three US starting points, measured to the same terminal — and none of them is short.
| Starting from | Distance, our routing | Free-flow time | Border note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boston | 380.6 mi | 7 hr 51 min | Our routing doesn’t name the crossing |
| New York (Midtown) | 514.5 mi | 10 hr 26 min | Champlain–Lacolle is on the CBSA’s Québec list |
| Burlington, Vermont | 215.0 mi | 4 hr 50 min | Highgate, VT is on the same list |
OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic, no stops, and no border wait on the drives from the US. Our routing doesn’t name the border crossing it uses on the US drives. Our routing
Boston’s 7 hr 51 min is a full day once you add stops, a meal and the line at the booth. The border wait isn’t in any of these times.
New York adds about 134 miles on top of Boston’s run. Split it with a night on the way, or fly — the YQB page prices that.
At 30 mpg the Boston drive burns roughly 13 US gallons, our arithmetic. We didn’t price the US side’s fuel or tolls, and we found no toll on the Québec side.
Burlington is the exception — under five hours on our routing, a day’s drive with daylight left at the end.
Drive up, sail home, and the car left behind in Québec
Before the border, settle which city you’ll be in when the cruise finishes.
The Québec sailings we checked end somewhere else: Holland America runs 7 days to Boston, Princess 10 days to Boston or 14 to Fort Lauderdale, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 to New York, and Norwegian’s Jewel to Philadelphia.
So the drive up is the easy half. The car you drove is in Québec when you walk off a ship in Boston or New York.
Leave your own car in Québec on a one-way sailing and it sits there waiting — a flight back north, or a long trip by land, just to collect it.
A rental dropped one-way in Québec solves that on paper — in practice it runs into the company rules below.
Weighing your own car at the Port’s lot instead? The hub prices Louise Basin.
Stanstead, Highgate or Lacolle on the CBSA’s Québec crossing list
Three of the crossings on the CBSA’s own wait-time list line up with the drives from New England and New York.
The CBSA’s wait-time list for Québec includes Stanstead (Route 55) / Derby Line, VT; St-Armand–Philipsburg / Highgate, VT; and St-Bernard-de-Lacolle (Highway 15) / Champlain, NY.
The CBSA publishes wait times for each one — check the list the morning you drive, not the night before.
The CBSA says early mornings are the best time to cross. That argues for a night near the line and a crossing soon after breakfast, easy from Burlington, harder from New York.
Our routing doesn’t name the border crossing it uses on the US drives, so pick yours on the map and check its wait before you commit.
Passports, enhanced licences and the letter for a child
Two governments, two lists — the stricter one decides what you carry.
To get back into the US by land, US citizens show a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card; children under 16 may show a birth certificate.
Canada lets US citizens in on proof of identity and citizenship (a passport, a birth certificate with photo ID, or an enhanced licence), plus a consent letter for a child when custody is shared and the other parent isn’t travelling; plan around the stricter US rule.
Pack for the US rule, not the Canadian one, because every US citizen in the car needs a document from that first list to drive back across.
Your cruise line has its own document rules for the sailing. Read them alongside these, since a land crossing and a cruise check-in aren’t the same desk.
Cannabis is legal in Canada, but carrying it across the border either way is a serious criminal offence. The CBSA says leave firearms and weapons at home.
What each rental company lets you take across, in its own words
Read across each row — crossing the border and ending the rental on the other side are separate permissions.
| Company | A US car into Canada | A Canadian car into the US | One-way across the border | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | Most US cars can go (not exotics or large vans) | Yes, throughout Canada and the US | Must be booked ahead; drop charge shown at booking | Checked Oct 3, 2026 |
| Avis | Certain cars, arranged in advance, with a non-resident insurance card | Yes, “Canadian vehicles may be driven into the U.S.” | US-to-Canada one-ways at select border-area desks only | Checked Oct 3, 2026 |
| Hertz (YQB) | Not covered on the YQB terms we read | Allowed, with the agreement in the car and a pass from the border guard | Car must come back to the renting location | Checked Oct 3, 2026 |
| National (YQB) | Not covered on the page we read | Yes, throughout Canada and the US; not Mexico | No one-way fee published | Checked Oct 3, 2026 |
| Thrifty | “In most cases,” with a US licence | Not covered on the page we read | No one-way fee published | Checked Oct 3, 2026 |
| Sixt | From western states, BC and Alberta only; we found no Northeast rule | Not covered on the pages we read | US-to-Canada one-ways not permitted | Checked Oct 2, 2026 |
From each company’s own page or terms, read Oct 2–3, 2026. Avis takes cross-border questions at 1-800-879-2847. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Hertz’s YQB terms allow the US but ask you to carry the rental agreement, get a pass from the border guard at entry, tell the counter, and bring the car back to the renting location — so no one-way from Hertz YQB into the US.
That one matters for the trip home. Rent at YQB from Hertz and you can drive to Vermont, then you have to drive back.
Sixt says one-way rentals from the US to Canada are not permitted. It’s the clearest no on the list.
The others allow the crossing in some form, but allowing it and pricing a one-way are two different things.
A one-way from Boston into Québec, and the fee we found nobody printing
None of the companies we read that allow a cross-border one-way put the fee on a public page.
Enterprise says one-way rentals must be booked ahead and the drop charge is shown at booking; Avis says a one-way service fee may apply on certain rates; no company we read published a Boston- or New York-to-Québec one-way fee.
So we can’t give you a number, and we won’t guess one. The quote is the only place it appears.
A tour operator partnered with Avis says its customers can pick up in Montréal, Québec City or Toronto and return in New York — a package arrangement, not a public Avis rate. We read it secondhand, so treat it as a lead to ask about.
Starting in Montréal instead? That one-way gets its own treatment on our Montréal-to-Québec City page, and our one-way guide explains drop charges in general.
Price the one-way against two simpler plans: a flight to YQB, or the train through Montréal to the Gare du Palais.
Price the drive home before you price the drive up
If your cruise ends in Québec City and you want to drive home, the rental starts here — and the border rules decide which companies can quote it.
Search the one-way, check the drop charge before you pay, and confirm the return-city rule with the desk.
- Pick-up: YQB or Côte du Palais
- Check the one-way fee in the total
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
The US-to-Québec drive and its rentals: questions
How long is the drive from Boston to the Québec City cruise port?
About 381 miles and 7 hr 51 min to Terminal 84 on our free-flow routing, before stops and the border wait.
Which border crossing should I use driving from New York to Québec City?
The CBSA’s Québec wait-time list includes St-Bernard-de-Lacolle (Highway 15) / Champlain, NY. Check its live wait the morning you cross; the CBSA says early mornings are best.
Can I drive a US rental car to Québec City for a cruise?
Usually, with limits. Enterprise allows most US cars, Avis certain cars arranged in advance, and Thrifty says “in most cases.” Sixt doesn’t permit one-way rentals from the US to Canada.
Can I rent a car in Québec City and drop it in Boston?
Hertz at YQB wants its cars back where they were rented. We found no company that publishes a Québec-to-US one-way fee, so search the one-way and confirm with the desk.
What ID do I need to drive into Canada and back for a cruise?
For the US return by land: a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Children under 16 may show a birth certificate.
