Tap through four rows and see which side of the line you land on
Where the days go, how many of you, the left-hand side and the permit. One tap per row.
The first row does most of the work.
Marina Bay, the Gardens and the waterfront are a short ride apart, so a plan that stays there never needs the car.
It starts to matter when the plan leaves the island — and the paperwork gets harder from there.
Two kinds of Singapore week, and only one has a use for the car
Read both lists and count which one sounds like your week.
A car fits when
- You want a day in Johor Bahru and the brand says yes in writing
- Five or more of you with cruise bags, and a van you’ve priced
- The driver has an IDP and has driven on the left
- You’d rather not depend on an app at a busy terminal
Skip it when
- You’re going from Changi to the ship and nowhere else
- Your days are Marina Bay, the Gardens and the hawker centres
- The driver has no permit
- A week of terminal parking would cost more than the rides
Start with the easy test. Gardens by the Bay’s outdoor gardens are free; Flower Dome and Cloud Forest open 9 AM–9 PM daily, with adult visitors paying S$26 for the Cloud Forest or S$46 for it and the Flower Dome together (prices as printed October 2026; residents pay less).
It’s 1.7 miles (2.7 km) from MBCCS, 6 minutes by car on empty roads — at that distance we’d take the MRT or a short ride, not a car.
Johor is the harder call, and the paperwork and the unanswered questions are on the hub page.
Count which list your week reads like, then go back to the taps.
Price the car against these rides, not against nothing
Every row here reaches the ship without parking anything.

LTA, Changi Airport, Holland America and Viator pages. Checked Oct 5, 2026
LTA’s taxi tariff starts with a flag-down of S$4.40–5.20, then 26 cents per 400 m up to 10 km and per 350 m after that.
A peak surcharge adds 25% of the metered fare on weekdays 6:00–9:29 AM and 5 PM–midnight, and on weekends 10 AM–1:59 PM and 5 PM–midnight. From midnight to 5:59 AM it’s 50%, and the booking fee is S$2.30 off-peak.
The published operator tariffs list a Changi Airport surcharge of S$8 from 5 PM to midnight and S$6 at other times, and a Marina Bay Cruise Centre surcharge of S$5 from 7 AM to before 5 PM and S$3 at other times. ComfortDelGro confirms these pickup surcharges. A Changi-to-port trip includes the Changi surcharge, not the cruise-centre surcharge; the reverse trip includes the cruise-centre surcharge, not Changi’s.
Our distance-only estimate, not a quote: the S$4.40–5.20 flag-down plus 23 increments of S$0.26 for kilometres 1–10 and 30 increments for the remaining 10.4 km gives S$18.18–18.98 on the meter. Add the S$6 Changi pickup surcharge for S$24.18–24.98, rounded to S$24–25. This excludes waiting time, ERP tolls, booking and payment fees. No cruise-centre pickup surcharge is added on arrival.
In the 5 PM to midnight window the metered part rises 25% and Changi’s surcharge goes to S$8, which puts the same run at roughly S$31–32 before waiting time, ERP tolls, booking and payment fees.
That’s about S$29 (about US$23) at the top of the range, against a rental at an assumed S$200 a day — before fuel, parking or ERP. The calculator on the Changi page runs it with your numbers.
Changi lists Grab, Gojek, Zig, Tada, Ryde and Geolah with pickup points at Terminals 1–4. Celebrity says Uber and Lyft aren’t available.
The MRT needs a change at Tanah Merah or Expo, and the Changi page has the route and the train hours.
Royal Caribbean sells airport-to-pier transfers for a fee, with no Singapore price on the page we read; Disney sells prepurchased ground transport from Changi and a few hotels, with a representative outside baggage claim and no price published.
None of those rows needs a car park. Start from there.
The paperwork, the left-hand side and a line you shouldn’t cross
Singapore’s own police site and the State Department agree on the paperwork.
Singapore Police say a visitor driving here needs a foreign licence plus an International Driving Permit, or an official English translation if the licence isn’t in English and there’s no IDP. ASEAN nationals are exempt. The US State Department repeats licence plus IDP for stays under 12 months.
A 3-month limit appears in the rules for new citizens and residents — it isn’t a visitor rule.
We read that as a permit or a translation, not a US licence alone — and as a form to fill in at home, not at the counter.
Vehicles drive on the left in Singapore, per the State Department. The first turn out of a car park is the one that catches people — take it slowly.
Singapore treats drink-driving as a criminal offence. A first conviction can mean a fine of S$2,000 to S$10,000, up to 12 months in jail and a driving ban of at least two years, under section 67 of the Road Traffic Act. Repeat convictions carry heavier penalties, and the ban has statutory exceptions. The breath limit is 35 micrograms per 100 ml today and a 2026 bill proposes 15. Don’t drive after any drink.
Treat a glass of wine at the pre-cruise dinner as a reason to leave the keys.
US citizens need no visa for 90 days or less, and must file an SG Arrival Card with health declaration no more than 3 days before entry.
Sixt’s Changi page sets a minimum age of 22 — some categories higher, with underage fees possible.
We didn’t read Singapore’s speed limits, handheld-phone rule or alcohol limit, and we found no deposit, collision-excess, automatic-gearbox or child-seat terms for any Singapore brand. Look those up before you collect the keys — the counter is a bad place to learn them.
If the taps said rent, book the driving days and nothing else
Collect the car for the days it works — and return it before you sail. A week in a car park is the expensive way to hold one.
The desk cards show who’s open, and our Discover Cars review covers deposits and coverage.

- Check the currency on the booking screen before you pay

Car or no car in Singapore: questions
Is a rental car worth it for a cruise out of Singapore?
Usually not. By our arithmetic a taxi from Changi to Marina Bay runs about S$24–25 off-peak, the MRT and ride-hail apps also work, and parking at the terminals costs more than most people expect. A car earns a place on a Johor Bahru day.
What licence does an American need to drive in Singapore?
Singapore Police ask visitors to carry a foreign licence plus an International Driving Permit, or an official English translation if there is no IDP. The State Department repeats licence plus IDP for stays under 12 months.
Which side do cars use in Singapore?
The left, per the State Department. A rental gives you no practice before the first junction, so a driver who has never done it should skip the car.
How hard does Singapore come down on drink-driving?
Hard. It’s a criminal offence, and a first conviction can mean a fine of S$2,000 to S$10,000, up to 12 months in jail and a driving ban of at least two years, under section 67 of the Road Traffic Act. Repeat convictions carry heavier penalties. Don’t drive after any drink.
Can someone under 22 rent a car in Singapore?
Not from Sixt at Changi, whose page sets a minimum of 22, some categories higher, with underage fees possible. We didn’t read other brands’ limits, so ask the desk.
Do Uber and Lyft work in Singapore?
Celebrity says they aren’t available. Changi lists Grab, Gojek, Zig, Tada, Ryde and Geolah instead, and we didn’t read Grab’s own page.

Rather have someone else work it out?
Send the ship’s name and your dates. An advisor decides car or no car with you and books the rest, at no extra cost.
