Price the car against the ride, because the ride is short and fixed
Every row here reaches the ship without leaving a car at Pinkenba.

Queensland’s taxi fare sticker, Brisbane Airport, Translink, Con-x-ion and Discover Cars pages. Checked Oct 6, 2026
Queensland sets maximum fares for taxis on the meter — flagfall of A$3.80 on weekday daytimes and A$6.20 at other times, then A$2.77 a kilometre. Those are maximums for rank and hail hires, not for a booked car, and we didn’t price rideshare.
Brisbane Airport adds an A$4.86 fee to taxi and rideshare trips from the airport. That fee is in our airport figure and not in the CBD one.
For context, the airport’s own page puts a taxi from the airport to Brisbane City at A$67 to A$82. The terminal is closer than the city, but treat our figure as a floor, not a quote — it leaves out waiting time and tolls.
Airtrain is the cheap leg and the wrong one — it runs to the city, and the terminal has no public transport at all. Airtrain’s own site also advertises A$17 each for two or more adults — we print the airport’s fare.
Four people split one cab, so the cost per head drops fast. Run your own numbers in the airport calculator before you decide.
None of these rows needs a car park. Unless you’re heading for the coast, that’s the case for skipping the rental.
Four questions, and the reading they add up to
Where the days go, how many of you, the left-hand side and the driver’s age. One tap per row.
The first row does most of the work. A plan that stays in the city never needs the car.
The coast is the exception — the distances stop being a short hop. The hub has the miles and the minutes.
Under 25 matters at the counter: Budget’s page asks for 25 or over at its standard rates, and Avis and Sixt list a minimum of 21 with surcharges possible.
Driving in Queensland on a US licence: the left side and the 0.05 limit
Queensland’s own pages set the rules, and none of them is exotic. The left-hand side is the one that bites.
Queensland’s transport page says an overseas licence is valid for a visitor, who must drive only the class it authorises. If the licence isn’t in English, carry a recognised English translation.
The page doesn’t mention an international driving permit.
Austroads, the national road-agency body, words it as a permit or an English translation for a licence that isn’t in English. A US licence is in English, so by those two pages you need neither.
Sixt’s Brisbane page still says an IDP or translation may be required. Ask your brand before you land — if it wants a permit, get one at home, not at the counter.
Queensland traffic keeps left. No Queensland page we read states that in one line — the road rule we did read, regulation 130, bars the right lane on a fast multi-lane road unless you’re overtaking or turning, which assumes it.
The first turn out of a car park is the one that catches people — slow down for it.
The blood-alcohol limit on an open licence is below 0.05, per the Queensland government. Treat a glass of wine at the pre-cruise dinner as a reason to leave the keys.
It’s illegal to hold a phone or rest it on any part of your body while driving, even stopped. The fine is A$1,295 and 4 demerit points.
A cradle or voice control is allowed on an open licence.
The default limit is 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside them unless a sign says otherwise.
We found no deposit, collision-excess, automatic-gearbox or child-seat terms for any Brisbane brand. Look those up before you collect the keys, because the counter is a bad place to learn them.
A yes on the quiz? Hire for the land days, not the ship days
Collect the car for the days it works and return it before you board. A week in a car park at Pinkenba is the expensive way to hold one.

Questions about hiring a car for a Brisbane cruise
Is a rental car worth it for a cruise out of Brisbane?
Usually not for the ride to the ship. A taxi from the airport runs about A$42–45 by our arithmetic and the terminal has no rental return.
A car pays off on coast days, then goes back before you sail.
Do Americans need an international driving permit in Queensland?
Not by the two official pages we read: Queensland and Austroads ask for an English translation only when a licence isn’t in English. Sixt’s page says an IDP may be required, so ask your rental brand.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Brisbane?
The left. No Queensland page we read states it in one line, but the keep-left lane rule assumes it.
A driver who has never done it should skip the car.
What is the drink-drive limit in Queensland?
Below 0.05 on an open licence, per the Queensland government. Don’t drive after a drink, and remember the cruise-eve dinner counts.
Can someone under 25 hire a car at Brisbane Airport?
It depends on the brand. Avis and Sixt list a minimum of 21 and Budget asks for 25 at standard rates, with younger-driver charges possible.
Ask the desk before you book.
Is there a train or bus to the Brisbane cruise terminal?
No. The Port of Brisbane says no public transport serves the terminal. Airtrain reaches the city, not Pinkenba, so the last stretch is a taxi, a rideshare or a booked shuttle.

Rather have someone else work it out?
Send the ship’s name and your dates. An advisor decides car or no car with you and books the rest, at no extra cost.
