Brisbane Airport to the Cruise Terminal: Rent a Car or Ride?

The airport and the terminal are close and the road between them is short. Our routing puts the terminal 7.5 miles (12.1 km) from the international terminal, 18 minutes on empty roads, and a taxi covers it for about A$42–45 by our arithmetic. The rental question here isn’t the drive, it’s the car: nothing at Pinkenba takes it back. Below: the sum, the quirk, and the one sensible way to use a car around this sailing.

The drive

Eighteen minutes by our routing, fifteen by the port’s

The run is short, which is why the taxi is hard to beat.

The Port of Brisbane puts the terminal 12 km and about 15 minutes from the airport — ours is a different measure. Our routing from a point near the international terminal gives 7.5 miles (12.1 km) and 18 minutes on empty roads, with no traffic in it.

Plan on the port’s figure plus a margin — ship-day traffic and the pickup queue sit outside both numbers.

We couldn’t confirm whether any toll road lies on that run. If a brand charges its A$3.30 a toll day, it applies only on days you use a toll road — ask before you leave the counter.

At the terminal, cars can use a 2-minute set-down area in front of the building, and the driver has to stay with the vehicle. A taxi rank and a rideshare zone are about 120 m away.

Set the sat-nav for Marine Road if it balks at the new street address.

Against the other ways to do it

Our arithmetic in Australian dollars; your booking screen has the real total. The A$60 base rate is our assumption: Discover Cars’ Brisbane page showed an average of A$60 a day on Oct 6, 2026, with airport rates from about A$28 to A$52 by class. We assume the quote includes any GST and that no airport fee applies, since no brand page we read prints one. We read no Brisbane pump price, so type what you see per litre and the fuel line converts it at 3.785 litres a US gallon and 30 mpg. We found no child-seat price, so the seat stepper adds nothing; put any seat charge in the coverage box. The only toll line is the A$3.30 a toll day that Avis, Budget and Sixt add; the tolls themselves aren’t priced. A one-way drop charge is a box you can fill: no brand we read prints one.

At an assumed A$60 a day, one day for two people comes to about A$60 (about US$40) before fuel, our arithmetic. The run is under half a US gallon at 30 mpg, so the pump price barely moves it.

The taxi tops out near A$45, which leaves the car about A$15 dearer, and that’s before a one-way charge, a taxi back for whoever returns the car, or the time you lose at the counter.

The taxi sum is ours — our routing’s 12.09 km at A$2.77 is A$33.49. Flagfall of A$3.80 on a weekday daytime makes A$37.29, and A$6.20 at other times makes A$39.69.

The airport’s A$4.86 fee takes it to about A$42–45 before waiting time and tolls.

Queensland’s fares are maximums on the meter for rank and hail hires — a booked taxi or a rideshare isn’t capped the same way, so treat our range as a guide, not a ceiling.

For two people heading to the ship, the taxi wins. Rent only if the car has land days ahead of it.

    The car problem

The rental has nowhere to go once you reach Pinkenba

A taxi leaves nothing behind. A rental leaves a car, and the terminal has no desk to take it.

The port’s FAQ says there are no onsite rental services at the terminal. A car you drive there has no desk to hand it back to — and no one waiting for the keys.

You then have three choices — each with a price. Return it somewhere else, which means a one-way hire — Sixt and Budget say it’s available, and neither prints a fee.

Leave it in a Wilson car park for the sailing. Or don’t drive it there at all.

The car-park choice is the one people picture — and it’s the worst sum on this page. Eight days at our assumed A$60 is A$480, and a week in P3 is A$111 on top, about A$591 in all against two taxi rides of roughly A$90.

The base rate is our assumption, so swap in your quote.

Wilson’s car parks open only on ship days and prepaying doesn’t guarantee a bay — the hub has the table.

A rental that ends at the airport avoids all of it. The desk cards show who takes a car back round the clock.

    Land days first

The sensible use: a car for the days before the ship, handed back at the airport

Rent for the coast, return at the airport, ride the last twelve kilometres.

If you’re flying in early for the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast, collect the car at the airport desk and return it there on embarkation morning. Then take the taxi for the last 7.5 miles.

That keeps the long drives, which the hub prices, and drops the one leg a car can’t finish. The return desks matter more than the pickup ones: Avis and Sixt print a return at any hour, and Hertz lists 5 AM to midnight.

Build in the margin. A car returned at 9 AM on boarding day leaves time for a cab, and a car returned at 11 AM does not. That’s our view, not the cruise line’s — check the boarding window on your own documents.

Coming home, take the taxi back from the terminal. A rental there only makes sense if land days follow the cruise.

    Without a car

Three ways to skip it, and what we could and couldn’t confirm

The shuttle fare is the one number here that we couldn’t pin down.

Con-x-ion, a private operator, runs an airport-to-terminal shuttle that takes under an hour and must be booked online. Be ready ten minutes before departure — the operator says it can’t wait for late passengers.

Its cruise-transfer page lists a fare from $25 for the airport to the cruise terminal, with no date or currency, so we couldn’t confirm that fare for 2026-27 — ask for a quote before you count on it.

The port also lists off-site parking and shuttle operators, among them Andrew’s Airport Parking, Portside Parking and Con-x-ion. Smarte Carte sells a luggage transfer from the terminal to the airport’s Skygate centre — the page showed no price.

Airtrain doesn’t come close — it ends in the city, not at Pinkenba. The should-you-rent page has the full price table.

    If you rent

Collect it on the first driving morning

Pick the car up when the driving starts, not on arrival day, and bring the licence your brand asks for.

The licence and left-side rules are on the should-you-rent page.

    FAQ

    Brisbane Airport to Pinkenba: questions

How far is Brisbane Airport from the cruise terminal?

The Port of Brisbane says about 12 km and 15 minutes. Our routing from near the international terminal gives 7.5 miles (12.1 km) and 18 minutes on empty roads.

What should a taxi from Brisbane Airport to the cruise terminal cost?

About A$42–45 by our arithmetic from Queensland’s maximum fares and the airport’s A$4.86 fee, before waiting time and tolls. It’s our own sum, not a quote, and a booked car may differ.

Can I drop a rental car at the Brisbane cruise terminal?

We found no return point. The port says there are no onsite rental services, so return the car at the airport or another office, or pay for a one-way hire, whose fee no brand printed.

Is Brisbane Airport’s rental return open at night?

Avis and Sixt say they take returns round the clock. Hertz lists 5 AM to midnight.

We read no after-hours return on Budget’s page.

Can I leave a rental car at the terminal while I cruise?

Only by paying the rental for the whole trip and a Wilson car park on top. Eight days at our assumed A$60 plus a week in P3 comes to about A$591, against roughly A$90 in taxis.

How do I get from Brisbane Airport to the ship without a taxi?

Con-x-ion runs a booked shuttle under an hour — its page listed a fare from $25 with no date or currency, so confirm the fare. Airtrain goes to the city, not to the terminal.
