The one-way charge is the number you can’t look up
Galveston doesn’t sit next to its airports — the port puts Hobby about 45 minutes away and IAH about an hour and a half, so the ride to the ship is a real trip whichever way you make it.
The Galveston Shuttle does it for $28 a person each way, booked online.
Rent one way from Hobby to Enterprise’s island branch instead and the total comes to about $74 by our math on an assumed $50 rate — before the one charge that decides the whole thing.
That’s the drop charge. Enterprise’s own FAQ says it “varies depending on location and time of year.” It shows up at booking, Alamo warns that a one-way rate may run higher too, and we found no company publishing one for Houston to Galveston.
Enterprise’s island branch also says it can’t run customers to or from the port, so the last few miles after you return the car are an Uber or a cab.

$56 for two, $112 for four
| Who and where | In a rental | Instead | Leans toward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby to the ship, two of you | $74 one way, plus any drop charge | $56 on the Galveston Shuttle | The shuttle |
| Hobby to the ship, four of you | $86 one way, plus any drop charge | $112 on that shuttle | The car, if the drop charge is small |
| Via Space Center Houston, two of you | $155 with tickets and parking | $56 on the shuttle, with no Space Center | The car, if you want the stop |
| Two nights on the Seawall first, two of you | $193 from Hobby, parking at $25 a night | $56 on the shuttle, then Uber and the $1 trolley | No car |
Our arithmetic, not a quote. It assumes a $50 base rate ($60 for a bigger car carrying four), the $4 facility charge at both Houston airports, an assumed 11% fee, 15% tax at the airports, fuel at $3.94 a gallon, and on the Space Center row an assumed $35 a ticket (online it runs $29.95 to $39.95 by date) plus $10 to park. The drop charge isn’t in any row, because we found no company that publishes it. Illustrative
The shuttle charges per person, not per party — its price climbs with every traveler while the car’s barely moves.
At four, the gap between $112 in fares and about $86 for a bigger car is what the drop charge has to swallow before the shuttle wins again.
Four is also where car size starts to matter.
Enterprise rates its US midsize for 5 people with 3 bags and its standard SUV for 5 with 5; at seven, the full-size SUV holds just 3 bags where the 7-passenger minivan fits 5 — so book by bags, and confirm what your quote actually names. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Traveling with young kids? Texas Transportation Code 545.412 requires a child safety seat for anyone younger than 8, unless the child already stands over 4 feet 9 inches.
American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue each let you check a car seat without a fee, per their own policies, so bringing yours adds no bag fee on those four.
Worth a stop at Space Center Houston on the way?
If anyone in your group wants it, this is the car’s strongest case. From Hobby, routing through Space Center Houston adds only about 5 miles to the drive to the island by our estimate.
For two of you that day comes to about $155 with tickets and parking, against $56 on the shuttle and no Space Center at all.
Suitcases aren’t allowed inside — the center stores them for $7 a bag — but a rental’s trunk solves that before you reach the door.

Group size sits first because it moves the Galveston answer more than anything else; a stop at Space Center Houston is the next-biggest push toward a car.
The Strand, the Seawall, a big family, your own car
| If you’re… | Rent? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two, landing on sail day | No; shuttle or transfer | $28 a person on the Galveston Shuttle. Every ride from Houston. |
| Four or more | Price a one-way | The shuttle bills each seat. Houston airport to the ship. |
| Stopping at Space Center Houston | Yes | About 5 extra miles from Hobby, and the bags ride in the trunk. Space Center and Kemah. |
| Spending a night on the Strand | No | By its own count, the Tremont House is 0.3 miles from the port. The night before. |
| Spending a night on the Seawall | Probably not | Uber, Lyft and a $1 trolley get you around. The night before. |
| Driving on after the cruise | Yes | Houston is an hour away, the Hill Country four or more. Renting after the cruise. |
| Bringing your own car from Texas | No rental | Park at the port or at a park-and-cruise hotel. Galveston parking. |
A night on the island first rarely calls for the car. Two nights on the Seawall with a rental from Hobby and $25-a-night parking comes to about $193, while the shuttle is $56 for two and the island has rideshare and a $1 trolley.
Galveston rentals: your questions
Do I need a car for a Galveston cruise?
Not necessarily. The Galveston Shuttle runs from Hobby and IAH to the terminals for $28 a person each way when booked online, and the cruise lines sell transfers too. A car makes sense for four or more travelers, for a Space Center Houston stop on the way, or for driving on after the cruise.
Is it cheaper to rent a car or take the shuttle from Hobby to Galveston?
For two people, the shuttle: $56 against about $74 for a one-way rental on an assumed $50 rate, before any drop charge. For four, the shuttle comes to $112 and a bigger car to about $86 on an assumed $60 rate, so the car can come out ahead when your quote’s one-way charge is small.
Can I visit Space Center Houston on the way to my Galveston cruise?
Yes, if you’re driving. From Hobby, going via Space Center Houston adds only about 5 miles to the trip to the island, by our estimate. Suitcases can’t go inside, though it will store them for $7 a bag, and in a rental they can simply stay in the trunk.
Do I need a car in Galveston before my cruise?
Rarely. The port has signed Uber and Lyft zones at the terminals, the island’s trolley and buses cost $1, and hotels on the Strand are a short walk or ride from the port.
