After the Cruise · Galveston

Renting a Car After Your Galveston Cruise

Texas is big, and the drives off this island show it: Houston is an hour up I-45, the Alamo four and a half hours out. The one major-brand rental office we found on the island sits about 3 miles from Terminal 25, at 5919 Broadway — an Enterprise that opens at 7:30 on weekdays and 8 on weekends. Where you’ll leave the car decides whether that’s the counter for you.

Where does the car go back?

How to choose

If the car comes back to Galveston or to a Houston airport, rent it on the island. Enterprise on Broadway is a 3-mile Uber or cab from the terminal, it skips the airport charges, and you’re on the road without backtracking to Houston first. For a one-way to Austin, San Antonio or Dallas, or a particular company or class, the shuttle back to Hobby is the better start.

Enterprise, 5919 Broadway

  • Terminal 25 is roughly 3 miles away, by our estimate
  • Weekdays 7:30–6; Saturday and Sunday 8–1
  • “Unable to offer pick-up and drop-off services to and from the port,” in its own words
  • Texas’s 10% rental tax, no airport charges
  • It warns that cruise days bring longer waits

Hobby or IAH

  • $28 a person on the Galveston Shuttle, or your line’s own transfer
  • About ten companies at each airport
  • 15% tax, plus a $4 daily facility charge and a concession fee
  • Hand it back where your flight leaves
  • IAH’s rental center never closes

The port’s rideshare providers are Uber and Lyft, and each has signed pickup areas at the terminals, so that last 3 miles is simple.

The catch is timing. Weekend hours end at 1 PM, and Enterprise itself warns of longer waits on cruise days — book the car before you sail, not the morning you’re back.

Texas-sized drives

Houston in an hour, the Alamo in four and a half

Three trips fit an afternoon: Houston, Kemah on the way up, and Bolivar by ferry. The Hill Country is a night away, not a day out — four hours or more each way, by our estimates.

WhereFrom Terminal 25Before you go
Downtown Houston51 miles, about 1 hr 03 minDowntown and the Museum District, straight up I-45.
Kemah and Space Center Houston27 and 31 milesBoth sit on the road to Houston. A day at the Space Center.
Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula20 miles, about 44 min, plus the ferry lineOver on the free ferry. High Island’s bird sanctuaries, across on the peninsula, sell a $10 day pass, dawn to dusk.
Surfside Beach41 miles, about 1 hr 03 minWest down the island and across San Luis Pass, which no longer charges a toll.
Brenham123 miles, about 2 hr 26 minBlue Bell’s visitor center keeps weekday hours, 8 to 5, plus Saturdays in June, July and August only.
Beaumont and Lake Charles106 and 164 milesEast, toward the Louisiana line.
Austin214 miles, about 4 hr 03 minThe capital, and the edge of the Hill Country.
San Antonio246 miles, about 4 hr 29 minEntry to the Alamo church costs nothing, but you need a timed ticket reserved in advance.
New Braunfels and Fredericksburg227 and 288 milesHill Country towns, and a two-night trip at least.
Corpus Christi252 miles, about 4 hr 56 minDown the coast. Price the one-way separately.
Dallas289 miles, about 5 hr 13 minI-45 north, all five hours of it.

Miles and hours are our estimates from the Terminal 25 area, routed by OpenStreetMap on empty roads with no stops — and Houston traffic adds plenty. Hours and prices come from each place’s own site. Checked Sept 28, 2026

Bolivar

The free ferry, and the line for it

TxDOT runs the Galveston–Port Bolivar ferry free, 24 hours a day, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. The wait is the variable — TxDOT says it can pass two hours in peak season.

A rental car won’t trouble the size limits, which are written for big rigs. Before you leave the island, Houston TranStar posts live ferry wait times; if the line is long, Crystal Beach can wait for another day.

Evening flight?

Stop at Space Center Houston, then drop the car at the airport

Space Center Houston sits about 31 miles up I-45. From there it’s about 15 miles to Hobby or 46 to IAH, by our estimates.

Collect the car on Broadway in the morning, give the Space Center a few hours, and return it where you fly out. Suitcases and large duffels aren’t allowed inside, and storage is $7 a bag — in a car, they simply stay in the trunk.

Island vs airport

Why the island counter costs less

Rental lengthFrom Enterprise GalvestonFrom Hobby
1 day$55 and a 3-mile Uber or cab to get there$68 and $28 a person for the shuttle to Hobby
3 days$165 and a 3-mile Uber or cab to get there$205 and $28 a person for the shuttle to Hobby
5 days$275 and a 3-mile Uber or cab to get there$342 and $28 a person for the shuttle to Hobby

At an assumed $50 a day, the island adds only Texas’s 10% rental tax. Hobby adds 15% tax, the $4 daily facility charge and a fee we assume at 11%. Fuel isn’t in either column. Illustrative

That’s $55 against $68 for a day, and $275 against $342 for five, before the rides.

The rides widen the gap, not narrow it: 3 miles by Uber to Broadway, or $28 a person to Hobby.

Hobby earns its place only when the trip ends at an airport or another city and you care which company or car you get.

Toll-free, mostly

San Luis Pass went toll-free in 2025

The $2 toll on the bridge at the island’s west end came off in May 2025, after Galveston County commissioners voted it out.

I-45, the road to both Houston airports, has no tolls. On the way to IAH, you can skip the Sam Houston Tollway and the Hardy Toll Road; both are optional shortcuts.

Houston’s toll roads take no cash. The tags Texas reads are TxTag, EZ TAG, TollTag and a few from neighboring states — and TxDOT’s list doesn’t include E-ZPass.

Cross a toll camera in a rental and the company’s toll program sends the bill. Enterprise, National and Alamo add $4.95 per toll day, up to $34.65 a rental; Avis and Budget add $6.95, up to $34.95; both bill the tolls at the higher undiscounted rate.

Skip the car

Shuttle, Carnival or MSC to the airport

Book the Galveston Shuttle online and it’s $28 a person each way to Hobby or IAH — by phone, $55 and $65.

Carnival guests can buy the line’s transfer: $41.99 a person to Hobby, $58.99 to IAH. Carnival says not to book a flight home before 1:30 PM.

MSC charges its guests $25 a person each way to Hobby, $31 to IAH, and wants flights home at least 6 hours after the ship arrives.

Seats, Texas-style

Texas’s one-line car-seat rule

Texas wants a child safety seat for any child under 8 who isn’t yet taller than 4 feet 9 inches (Transportation Code 545.412).

That holds in a rental, and the easiest seat is your own — American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue each check one free.

Bag space runs out before seats do. Enterprise’s US list puts 3 bags in a midsize and 5 in a standard SUV, both with 5 seats; the full-size SUV gets 7 seats but 3 bags, the 7-passenger minivan 7 and 5.

Enterprise’s own capacity figures for its US fleet; whatever car your contract names is the one to count bags against. Checked Sept 27, 2026

Two ways to book

Book Broadway direct; compare the airports

Discover Cars’ Galveston page lists no island pickups, so for a Broadway start, book with Enterprise directly.

For an airport start, search Hobby or IAH, and set the return wherever you fly out — or the city the trip ends in.

FAQ

Leaving Galveston by car: your questions

Can I pick up a rental car at the Galveston cruise port after my cruise?

None of the terminals has one that we found. Enterprise’s office at 5919 Broadway is the only major-brand counter we found on the island, roughly 3 miles from Terminal 25 and open 7:30 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 1 PM on weekends. It says it can’t collect you at the port, so it’s an Uber, Lyft or cab.

Is the Galveston–Bolivar ferry free?

Yes — TxDOT runs it at no charge, around the clock, and any normal-size car fits. Crossing takes about 20 minutes, though TxDOT says peak-season waits can top two hours.

How far is San Antonio from the Galveston cruise port?

Roughly 246 miles to the Alamo, about four and a half hours by our route estimate, with no traffic. The Alamo church is free, but you need to reserve a timed ticket ahead.

Is there still a toll on the San Luis Pass bridge?

No. Galveston County commissioners voted to remove the $2 toll on the bridge at the island’s west end, and it ended in May 2025.
