Its rules shape the day more than the drive does
In a rental, the suitcases ride in the trunk while you’re inside. Park where you can see the lot, keep everything out of sight and take the valuables in with you — ordinary advice anywhere, not a warning about this lot.
Without a car you’d need a ride that waits, or a paid bag check for each suitcase.
A family of four with four big bags would spend $28 on storage alone.
| From Space Center Houston’s own pages | |
|---|---|
| Tickets | Adults $29.95 to $39.95 online by date, $5 more at the gate; children 4 to 11 $24.95 to $34.95 online; 3 and under free |
| Parking | Parking is $10 |
| Tram tours | The Rocket Park, Astronaut Training Facility and NASA campus trams are first come, first served, with passes handed out on arrival; the last tram leaves two hours before closing. Historic Mission Control is an extra-cost tram booked online ahead, and it sells out at busy times |
| VIP tour | The NASA VIP Tour ($199.95) showed “currently unavailable” when we checked |
| How long | Its own itineraries run 2 hours (the quick version), 4 hours (a half day) and 7 or more (a full day) |
| Hours | Hours change by the day and season; check its calendar for your date |

Buy online: an adult ticket costs $5 less than at the gate, whatever the date.
If the trams matter, arrive early. The free ones hand out passes as you come in, and the last one leaves two hours before closing — which can turn a late-afternoon visit into one without the trams.
Between the airport and the ship, the car is the only option we could put a number on: the Viator tours start downtown, the cruise lines’ versions show no price, and no bus runs from the island. For two of you, a one-way car from Hobby with tickets and parking is about $155 by our sums, against $56 for two shuttle seats that skip it — and that gap is the real price of the visit.
It’s worth the car if
- The Space Center is the one thing you’d hate to miss
- You’re three or more, so the car’s cost spreads further
- You land the day before, or fly out in the evening
- Kemah and dinner on the water appeal
Skip it if
- You land on sail morning — there isn’t time
- The car would go back on a weekend afternoon
- You’re alone and the shuttle is $28
- A separate Houston trip suits you better
What does the stop add for your group?
Preset for two, Hobby to the ship by way of the Space Center. Try four people, other ticket prices or an IAH pickup.
The rental, line by line
Everything here is an estimate; the only real quote is the one a rental company gives you. Our base rate is $50 a day, and on Sept 28, 2026 Discover Cars’ Hobby listings began at “from $42” to “from $46” a day, and it cautions that a US price might not include every tax and surcharge, so use the rate on your quote. Either Houston airport gets a $4 daily facility charge in our sum (the airports don’t publish it; the figure is a consultancy’s) plus a concession fee we’ve set at 11% ourselves. Texas’s motor vehicle rental tax is 10%, and at the airports Houston-Harris County adds 5%; there’s no sales tax on top and no Florida-style per-day surcharge. Gas: a 30-mpg car and $3.94 fuel (AAA’s Galveston figure for Sept 28, 2026), across about 47 miles from Hobby to the Space Center to the island, our estimate; I-45 has no tolls. Our ticket default is $35, inside the online adult range, and kids 4 to 11 run $24.95 to $34.95. Nobody publishes the one-way charge to the island, so enter the one on your quote.
The shuttle will nearly always cost less, because it never buys a ticket.
So price the difference, not the totals. For two of you, about $99 more covers the car, the tickets and the parking; for four, about $113 — the gap barely grows as the group does.
Drive straight to the ship with no stop and the same one-way car runs about $74.
Most of the extra is the Space Center itself, not the car.
5 miles off the straight line from Hobby
| Route | Distance | Time, no traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby to Terminal 25, direct | 42 mi | 52 min |
| Hobby to the Space Center | 16 mi | 23 min |
| The Space Center to Terminal 25 | 31 mi | 40 min |
| IAH to the Space Center | 44 mi | 58 min |
| The Space Center to IAH | 46 mi | 57 min |
| The Space Center to Kemah Boardwalk | 7 mi | 13 min |
Our OpenStreetMap estimates at empty-road speeds with no stops; Houston rush hour can stretch every line. Our estimates
From IAH it’s a wider swing east, but the Space Center still lands on the road south to the island rather than behind you.
Do it the day you land, and sleep on the island
Hobby, then the rental shuttle
The rental shuttles leave from Curb Zone 1. We’d allow half an hour from the gate to the driver’s seat.
Space Center Houston
It’s about 16 miles from Hobby, and four hours is its own half-day plan.
Kemah, or straight to Galveston
Kemah Boardwalk is 7 miles off; the island is about 31 from the Space Center.
Return it at Enterprise Galveston
On weekdays it’s open until 6. Saturdays and Sundays it closes at 1, so keep the car overnight and bring it back the next morning, before boarding.
Uber or a cab for the last stretch
Enterprise to Terminal 25 is about 3 miles by our estimate, and Enterprise says it can’t drive you.
Off the ship, up I-45, onto an evening flight
Take an Uber or a cab the 3 miles from the ship to Enterprise on Broadway, open from 7:30 on weekdays and 8 on weekends, and the Space Center is about 31 miles up I-45.
Hobby is then about 15 miles away and IAH about 46, our estimates. Return the car at the airport — the island’s one-way charge isn’t published, so get it on your quote.
For its own transfer, Carnival advises no flight home earlier than 1:30 PM.
With a Space Center stop in the middle, plan on an evening flight, not an afternoon one.
Tours from downtown, and cruise-line versions with no price
Carnival, Princess and Norwegian each list a Space Center Houston tour that ends at the airport, yet none of their pages showed us a price, a length or a flight cutoff. Royal Caribbean’s now reads “no longer available.”
Ask your line for all three before you commit — the flight cutoff most of all.
The Viator tours with transportation all leave from downtown Houston — Houston City Tours’ NASA and city tour starts at $98.95 an adult, runs about 7 hours and includes admission. ToursByLocals lists a private version that begins at the Galveston cruise terminal and ends at the airport, about 6 hours with tickets, but shows no price.
Public transit won’t get you there: Galveston’s “Splash” connector goes only as far as Texas City, and Houston METRO’s Bay Area park-and-ride is a weekday commuter line into downtown.
Royal Galveston Shuttle mentions Space Center drop-offs, though the prices on that page aren’t for this route — ask it for a quote.
Add Kemah for dinner on the water
Walking the Kemah Boardwalk costs nothing. The all-day ride pass is $29.99, or $23.99 under 48 inches, and parking is free on weekdays but paid on weekends, holidays and event days, at a price the boardwalk doesn’t publish.
It’s 7 miles from the Space Center and about 27 from the terminals, by our estimates — a late lunch or an early dinner there, then the island.
Staying put? The island has its own list
| Sight | Price and hours | From the terminals |
|---|---|---|
| Moody Gardens | Aquarium and Rainforest pyramids $65 an adult; the one-day Value Pass $85 to $90. Free self-parking | 6 mi |
| Historic Pleasure Pier | All-day ride pass $30.99 (under 48 inches $24.99); walk-on $12.50 | On the island |
| Bishop’s Palace | $15 an adult, $12 ages 6–18; daily 10 to 5, last ticket at 4 | On the island |
| Moody Mansion | $15 an adult; daily 10 to 5, last ticket at 4 | On the island |
| Tall Ship Elissa and the Texas Seaport Museum | $18 an adult, $12 ages 6–18; Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 5:30, closed Mondays. On Harborside, near the terminals | On the island |
| Galveston Island State Park | $5 an adult, 12 and under free; reservations recommended | On the island |
Prices and hours as each site listed them; the mileage is our own estimate. Checked Sept 28, 2026
You won’t need a car for any of these — Uber and Lyft cover the island, and the trolley is $1.
Galveston Island State Park charges $5 for adults and nothing for kids 12 and under, and because it often fills, the park recommends reserving a day pass.
Reserve the car, then the tickets for your date
Search Hobby with Enterprise Galveston as the return for a one-way, or the same airport both ends for a round trip. Then buy the Space Center tickets online for your day — and book Historic Mission Control ahead if you want it, since it sells out at busy times.

NASA’s visitor center and your sailing, answered
How far is Space Center Houston from the Galveston cruise terminal?
Roughly 31 miles, about 40 minutes on empty roads, by our route estimate. Hobby is about 16 miles from it, so routing Hobby to the island through the Space Center adds only about 5 miles.
Can I bring luggage into Space Center Houston?
No — suitcases and large duffels stay outside, and Space Center Houston keeps them for you at $7 a bag. With a rental car, they can wait in the trunk.
How much are Space Center Houston tickets?
Online, adults pay $29.95 to $39.95 depending on the date, $5 more at the gate; children 4 to 11 are $24.95 to $34.95 online, and 3 and under get in free. Parking is $10.
Is there a shuttle from Galveston to Space Center Houston?
There’s no public bus — Galveston’s connector route stops at Texas City. The cruise lines list Space Center tours ending at the airport, but their pages showed us no prices, and Royal Caribbean’s version is no longer available.
Do I need to book the NASA tram tour?
Just Historic Mission Control, which costs extra and is booked online in advance. The other trams are first come, first served, with passes handed out as you arrive, and the last one leaves two hours before closing.
