The Night Before a Galveston Cruise: Do You Need a Car?

Enterprise on Broadway is the one major-brand rental office we found on Galveston Island, and on weekends it closes at 1 PM. Keep a Houston rental for a night on the Strand or the Seawall and it has to go back there, or 42 miles back to Hobby, before you board. Meanwhile Uber and Lyft pick up at the terminals, the island’s trolleys are $1, and the hotels charge anywhere from nothing to $40 a night to park.

The island branch

The island’s one branch closes at 1 on weekends

Most of this page follows from a single office. The only major-brand rental branch we found on the island is Enterprise’s, on Broadway, roughly 3 road miles from Terminal 25 by our estimate.

It’s open weekdays 7:30 to 6 but weekends only 8 to 1 — and its own page warns of longer waits on cruise days.

“While we’re unable to offer pick-up and drop-off services to and from the port,” Enterprise writes, “we’re here to assist you with all your other needs.” So the last 3 miles to the ship are an Uber, a Lyft or a cab.

The branch has a key drop out front for after-hours returns, but it checks cars in the next business day. Until then the car is still on your contract, and you’re at sea.

Match your drop-off time against the branch hours before you plan on keeping a car overnight.

Our read

Rideshare for the island, a rental for Houston

Where we land on it

For a night on the Strand or the Seawall, go without. The terminals, downtown and the beach are a short ride apart, and rideshare is authorized at the port. A rental adds a parking bill, a return to that one branch and a 1 PM weekend deadline — save it for Space Center Houston, Kemah or a drive up the coast.

Go carless if

  • You’re sleeping on the Strand or the Seawall
  • Uber, the trolley and your feet will do
  • You’re flying into Houston and riding the shuttle down
  • Your hotel charges to park

Rent if

  • Space Center Houston or Kemah is on the list — that day, planned
  • You’re staying out at the west end
  • You’re five or more, and rides would mean two cars
  • You drove your own car in — then the park-and-cruise hotels are the answer
Hotel parking

Free to $40 a night, with packages built for your own car

Several of them sell a cruise package: a night, parking for the week, sometimes a shuttle.

Parking as each hotel’s website listed it on Sept 28, 2026; the old Hotel Galvez now trades as the Grand Galvez. Checked Sept 28, 2026

The Tremont House’s package is $160 plus tax for the first night’s valet and up to 8 days, the Hilton sells 7 days for $100, and Gaido’s parks you free for the cruise with a night-before stay.

All of that is built for your own car, not a rental — a rental parked for the week keeps billing you every day of the cruise.

Pay by plate

Type the rental’s plate, not your own

How it works
SeawallSeawall parking is $2 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, capped at $16 a day, 10 AM to 6 PM every day of the year, paid by plate in PayByPhone (zone 5004)
Downtown and the StrandDowntown and the Strand are $2.25 an hour, 9 AM to 6 PM daily; a ticket is $33
Stewart and East BeachStewart Beach and East Beach are $15 a vehicle. Since April 2026, cameras read plates and a bill follows if you don’t pay, which in a rental goes to the rental company first
Galveston Island State Park$5 an adult, free for 12 and under; it often fills, so the park suggests reserving a day pass

From the city, Visit Galveston and Texas Parks and Wildlife, each on its own site. Checked Sept 28, 2026

The Seawall bills by plate and the beaches read plates by camera — harmless, until the plate belongs to someone else.

In a rental, enter the rental’s plate and pay on the spot. An unpaid beach visit caught on camera goes to the rental company first, and then comes back to you.

Two nights, tallied

What does a parked rental cost over two island nights?

RentingNot renting
ArrivalPick up at Hobby, about 42 miles from the islandA shuttle or your line’s transfer; the Galveston Shuttle is $28 a person to the terminals
Two nightsTwo rental days with Hobby’s charges and 15% tax, plus $25 a night at the Hilton’s self-parkUber, Lyft and the $1 trolley, as you go
Sailing morningDrop it at Enterprise Galveston as a one-way, then a 3-mile rideOne Uber or hotel shuttle to the terminal
Two of you, all in$193 plus any drop chargeThe shuttle or transfer, plus your rides

The $50 base rate and 11% fee are our assumptions; the $4 facility charge, 15% tax, fuel for about 45 miles and the Hilton Galveston Island Resort’s published $25 self-park fill in the rest. Illustrative

That’s about $193 before any drop charge — for a car that spends two nights in a hotel lot, not on the road.

Going without costs the $28-a-person Galveston Shuttle to the terminals, plus rides we can’t price for you. That’s why the calculator leaves that line blank.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Not a quote: a model built on a $50 base rate we assume. Discover Cars’ Hobby listings, checked Sept 28, 2026, ran “from $42” to “from $46” a day; it warns that a US price isn’t always the full tax-and-surcharge total, so type your quote’s rate over ours. Hobby and IAH pickups get a $4 daily facility charge (a consultancy published it; the airports don’t) and an 11% concession fee we assume. Texas charges its 10% rental tax instead of sales tax, with 5% more from Houston-Harris County on airport rentals. No Florida-style daily surcharge applies. I-45 has no tolls, and for fuel we use 30 mpg and $3.94 a gallon, the AAA average for Galveston on Sept 28, 2026. Parking opens at the Hilton Galveston Island Resort’s $25 self-park; change it to your hotel’s. Returning on the island as a one-way? Type any drop charge your quote shows.

    Getting around

Where the $1 trolley goes, and where it stops short

The port names Uber and Lyft as its rideshare companies, and both have signed zones at the terminals for pickup and drop-off.

Island Transit’s buses and trolleys are $1 a ride. The trolley runs a Downtown loop and a Seawall loop that meet at 21st and Seawall — though outside summer, the city’s 2026 map shows the Seawall trolley running Friday to Sunday only.

Neither loop reaches the ship — the trolley doesn’t stop at the port, the port says.

Cabs are the fuzzy part — the port says many companies offer flat rates to the terminals, without naming them. We couldn’t read the city’s taxi ordinance, so we don’t quote a meter rate.

    Sailing morning

If you’re on the Seawall, the ship is across the island

Downtown, the Tremont House puts itself 0.3 miles from the port — its count, not ours.

From the Seawall it’s a few miles across the island to Harborside Drive, so book an Uber or Lyft, or ask whether your hotel runs a cruise shuttle — many island hotels do on sailing day, the port says.

Check your terminal before you book the ride. The port has four on Harborside Drive, and every port page we read puts Royal Caribbean at Terminal 10 and Carnival at Terminal 25.

The port’s own pages disagree on which of 16, 25 and 28 the other lines use, so your cruise documents settle it.

The natural day for Space Center Houston is the one you fly in. Pick up at Hobby, see it on the way, and drop the car at Enterprise Galveston, not Hobby, before the branch closes.

On a weekend that means by 1 PM; on a weekday you have until 6. The Space Center day, planned.

Texas at the wheel: phones, containers, the beach

    What Texas law says
PhonesNo reading, writing or sending messages while driving anywhere in Texas, and no handheld phone at all in an active school zone
Open containersNot in the passenger area, even parked on a public road; the trunk and a locked glove box don’t count
Move overLeave the lane next to a stopped emergency, tow or TxDOT vehicle, or slow to 20 mph under the limit. Fines run $500 to $1,250
On the beachTexas’s default limit on a beach is 15 mph

From the Texas Transportation and Penal Codes, statute by statute. Checked Sept 28, 2026

Texas bans texting at the wheel everywhere, and handheld phones in active school zones.

Hands-free is the easy habit on the island — and on the sand, the default limit is 15 mph.

    FAQ

What people ask about Galveston’s night before

Do I need a car in Galveston before my cruise?

Usually not, for a night on the Strand or the Seawall. Uber and Lyft use signed areas at the terminals, island buses and trolleys are $1, and the Tremont House counts 0.3 miles to the port — though the trolley itself doesn’t stop there.

How much is hotel parking in Galveston?

By the hotels’ own sites: the Tremont House $36 a night, the Grand Galvez $40 valet, the Hilton Galveston Island Resort $25 self-park, the Holiday Inn Resort and Homewood Suites $15, and free for guests at Moody Gardens Hotel and Gaido’s, which also parks you free for the cruise with a stay.

How much is parking on the Galveston Seawall?

The city charges $2 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, capped at $16 a day, 10 AM to 6 PM every day of the year, paid by plate in PayByPhone. Some stretches are free.

Can I use a rental car at Galveston’s beaches?

Yes, as long as you pay on the spot. Stewart Beach and East Beach are $15 a vehicle, and since April 2026 cameras read plates and bill anyone who didn’t pay — in a rental, that bill reaches the rental company first.
