Getting There · Hobby or IAH to the island

Houston Airport to the Galveston Cruise Port by Rental Car

Hobby is about 42 miles from the terminals and IAH about 68, by our routing. The Galveston Shuttle charges $28 a person each way, which makes it the cheap answer for two and a pricey one for four — a car only catches up if your drop charge stays small, and keeping it through the cruise almost never pays.

The shuttle charges by the head; the car doesn’t

Count heads first

One or two of you: take the $28 shuttle. Four or more: a one-way car each way between Hobby and the island can undercut four seats — if the drop charge on your quote is small. Whatever the group, don’t keep the car and park it at the port for the cruise. At our assumptions that runs about $733 for two, against $112 for two on the shuttle there and back.

A one-way car makes sense if

  • Four or more of you are traveling together
  • The drop charge on your quote is small
  • You’ll reach Enterprise Galveston while it’s open
  • Space Center Houston is on your list for the way down

Stick with the shuttle if

  • You’re traveling as one or two
  • You land on a weekend afternoon, after the island branch has closed
  • The drop charge outweighs the seats you’d save
  • The plan was to leave the rental in a port lot all week

At our assumed $50 a day ($60 for four, who need a bigger car), with Hobby’s charges, 15% tax and fuel; the kept car adds the port’s own “about $25 a day” parking indication for 7 days. No row includes a drop charge — nobody publishes one, so add yours. Illustrative

A car that sits in a port lot for a week buys you eight days of rental and seven of parking, and it does nothing for any of them.

Hand it back, and rent another afterward if you’re driving on.

For four, the one-way rows are where the money is — and the drop charge is what can take it away again. Put your two quotes into the calculator further down and see what survives.

Hobby is about 26 miles closer each way, and Space Center Houston sits between it and the island.

From IAH the rental math barely moves; the drive is roughly half an hour longer, before any traffic.

Unpublished, so ask

Nobody prints the drop charge, so make them show it

Enterprise says its drop charge “varies depending on location and time of year” and appears when you book, and Alamo’s one-way policy says the rate itself can run higher too. None we checked publishes a figure for Houston to Galveston.

The only figures we turned up were in travelers’ forum posts — anecdotes, not prices, and not ones we’ll print.

So get the number on a real quote before you book the flight.

Check the return end while you’re at it. The only major-brand office we found on the island is Enterprise Galveston, so a one-way to the island ends there.

The $60 a day is ours, not a quote: four people need a bigger car, and Discover Cars was listing Hobby cars at “from $42” and “from $46” a day on Sept 28, 2026, though it cautions that American prices on the site can omit some taxes and surcharges. Your quote’s rate goes in that box.

At Hobby and IAH we include a facility charge of $4 a day — a consultancy’s figure, since the airports don’t publish it — plus an assumed 11% for the concession fee.

Texas taxes a rental at 10%, and Houston-Harris County’s 5% is added at the airports. Texas doesn’t add sales tax as well, and has nothing like Florida’s daily surcharge. I-45 is toll-free.

The kept car runs eight rental days for a 7-night cruise, fuel for the round trip at 30 mpg and $3.94 a gallon (AAA’s Galveston figure, Sept 28, 2026), and seven days at the port’s “about $25 a day” indication — its real rate shows when you book. Row two is for your pair of one-way quotes.

At the opening settings, nothing on the list does worse than the car that waits at the port.

The row worth watching is the second: two one-way quotes, drop charges in, against the shuttle for however many of you there are.

A weekend-afternoon landing finds the island branch already closed.

Keep the car overnight and return it before boarding the next morning, or leave the car out of it and take the shuttle.

Its key drop will take the car after hours. The branch checks it in the next business day, though — and until then it’s on your contract, with you at sea.

What you’d pay to ride instead

Booked online, a Galveston Shuttle seat from Hobby or IAH costs $28 each way — by phone, it’s $55 or $65.

The cruise-line transfers we priced are for each line’s own guests. Carnival charges $41.99 each for Hobby and $58.99 for IAH, in either direction; MSC’s are $25 to Hobby and $31 to IAH, each way, and MSC asks that flights home leave at least 6 hours after the ship docks.

Nobody publishes a taxi or rideshare fare from the Houston airports to the island.

Sail-day timing and every other ride are on our Galveston airports page.

    Toll roads, optional

I-45 is free; Houston’s toll roads are optional

I-45 carries you from either airport to the island without a toll. The Hardy Toll Road and Sam Houston Tollway are IAH-side shortcuts you can skip.

Take one and it’s cashless. TxDOT’s list takes TxTag, EZ TAG and TollTag, plus some neighboring states’ tags — E-ZPass isn’t among them.

In a rental, that means the company’s toll program.

Enterprise, National and Alamo bill $4.95 for every day a toll is used, up to $34.65 per rental; Avis and Budget bill $6.95, up to $34.95. The tolls come on top — at the higher undiscounted rate.

    FAQ

Hobby, IAH and a car to the Galveston ship: questions

Can I rent a car at Houston Hobby and drop it in Galveston?

Yes — book a one-way to Enterprise Galveston at 5919 Broadway, roughly 3 miles from Terminal 25 and the only major-brand office we found on the island. Nobody publishes the drop charge, so get it on your quote, and plan your own ride to the ship: the branch says it can’t take you to the port.

For a family of four, is a rental cheaper than the shuttle from Houston to Galveston?

It can be. Four Galveston Shuttle seats come to $112 each way, while a one-way car for four from Hobby is about $86 at an assumed $60 a day, before the drop charge. If your quote’s drop charge is smaller than the gap, the car comes out ahead.

Should I keep my rental car during the cruise in Galveston?

We wouldn’t. A 7-night cruise means eight rental days and about a week of port parking, roughly $733 for two at our assumptions, when the shuttle both ways is $112 for two.

How far is IAH from the Galveston cruise port?

About 68 miles and an hour and a half with no traffic, by our routing, which matches the port’s own hour and a half. From Hobby it’s about 42 miles.
