Questions

Questions about the river map

Which rivers are on the river cruise map?

Eleven river systems: the Danube; the Rhine with the Main and Moselle; the Seine; the Rhône and Saône; the Douro; Bordeaux's Garonne and Dordogne; the Elbe; the Nile; the Mekong; the Mississippi with the Ohio and Cumberland; and the Columbia and Snake. That's 132 places in all: 35 embarkation cities, 92 river ports and 5 scenic stretches.

Where do river cruise ships dock?

Usually in or near the old town, on the river embankment. Lines rarely publish the exact berth on their itinerary pages, so each card says so where none is published. A few starting cities are a transfer from the ship: Bucharest sailings usually board at Giurgiu, most Ho Chi Minh City sailings at My Tho, and several lines bus Siem Reap guests to the ship at Kampong Cham.

When is river cruise season?

In Europe, roughly March to December, with Christmas-market sailings from late November. The Nile sails year-round with a December to February peak, and the Mekong is at its best from November to March. Pick a month on the map to see which rivers are in season.

Which river cruise lines are on the map?

Every card lists the lines whose published itineraries sail that river: Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald, Tauck, Riverside and Celebrity River Cruises, plus American Cruise Lines, Lindblad and Aqua Expeditions where they're the ones sailing. Each reviewed line links to our full review; the others are marked not reviewed.

Places, lines and seasons come from the lines’ own itinerary pages and port sources, read October 23, 2026. River positions are the riverfront area, not berth directions. Rivers are drawn from Natural Earth’s public-domain river lines; dashed stretches are schematic links where the dataset has no line. Report a correction
